Man caught trying to enter Magic Kingdom with gun

"Deputies said Webb was randomly selected to go through the metal detector into the park."

Well we now know the metal detectors work. If they had randomly selected the person in front of or behind this person there would have been a loaded weapon in the park. Maybe time for everyone to go through metal detectors. It might be quicker than inspecting every individual bag.

Correct me if I'm wrong, I'm only basing this off first hand experience the last two days, but it seems everyone who comes through the "no bag" line is put through the metal detector and the random selection is only for the bags. I agree with the above sentiments, it's time to send everyone through.

I've seen it done this way, mostly at EPCOT, and I've also seen it done randomly even in the no bag line.

Personally it's easier to just send everyone through... It didn't back up the line much at all... Even with july 4 crowds at EPCOT.

From my experience, that's not true. This past week we went through security 8 times. All 8 times I went through with no bags. I didn't get selected half the time. My sister never got selected going though about five times. I noticed at Epcot, security seems mandatory for those going through the line with no bags. At other parks this was not the case.

Another side note, I believe there is somewhat a method to the randomness. The first night we entered it wasn't really crowded, such that the security could see where we came from. I heard a lead telling the random selectors to not pick as many coming off the boat from WL like we did. I don't know if this was one guy or what, but I realized that it is random, but not completely.
One final point, I agree with above posters that it's time they make it mandatory for all

Props to disney and their awesome security for catching this guy. Thank god they do their best to hire people that actually care, because all it would have taken was 1 guy on shift to be lazy at that moment and than who knows what the heck could have happened if he got through front gates.
As for if they actually randomly select people to go through metal detectors or not I think it's mostly random and anybody they may feel has to be double checked for any reason, as it should be.

I don't think they pick only suspicious looking people to go through the metal detectors. I'm a white 15 year old guy, who wore clothes with no hiding spots for guns or anything and I was still randomly chosen to go through the detectors on 3/4 days I was at the park earlier this year. I think everyone should just go through the detectors to speed up time, and prevent guns from entering WDW.

I wonder what the policy is for expectant mothers refusing to go through the detectors?

There's no reason a pregnant woman couldn't go through. I'm 38 weeks pregnant, local to central Florida and visited Disneyland in the spring; I estimate that I've been selected to go through the metal detectors no less than 50 times throughout my pregnancy (probably more).
