Major 2015 Pirates of the Caribbean Refurbishment Watch/Rumor.

The story comes up on the News13 website in Google search results. But, when you click on the link, the story has been removed. I won't post it here because they must have removed it for a reason. But, if you know how to use Google and open cached versions of search results, you can find it. There's really nothing earth shattering in the report, though. The ride has some maintenance issues and they're closing it for maintenance. This has all been discussed here ad nauseam already.

During yesterday's shareholder meeting, in response to a question Iger said that Pirates was his favorite attraction at DL but it was closed for refurbishment at the moment. DL's POTC is not currently closed, has no refurbishment on the horizon, and was not recently closed; he was mistaking it with WDW's upcoming closure

I think it really says a lot about the scale of the problems that Iger knows about this upcoming refurbishment. He doesn't dabble in the daily operations of the parks; he barely seemed to know what Disney's Hollywood Studios was when he was asked about it. Yet he seemed quite confident that there was a refurbishment for Pirates. We knew that this was a big issue, but I didn't realize it was big enough for the CEO to be involved with

(As a side note, I thought it was funny that Iger claimed Pirates as his favorite attraction, since it's the only attraction that has spawned a multi-billion dollar movie franchise. Of course he would!)

I guess that means Frozen will be his next favorite attraction then? lol

Iger's interest in the parks is based upon how many purchased IPs he can shoehorn into them. :p

I checked the app and saw that Pirates is down today. It seems like it is every other day the ride breaks down. How are they able to keep it going if it's having consistent issues? Is it because they need it open for spring break crowds? I'm hoping I can ride it a few times this week when I'm down there.

This is not as unlikely as you make it out to be. The CEO of a large company should not have to micromanage, that's what the ops management is supposed to do. He is responsible for the overall company, and he has to trust that his underlings know how to handle things.

I was there all last week and every time we went into Magic Kingdom, the ride was down. I know there was mention about shutting down for six months but they just need to do it now. It was a shame that we were not able to ride the ride due to the issues it keeps having. Get it fixed!!

I cannot get over my luck. The only ride that was ever down, other than announced in advance closings, was HM. I rode PoTC in February amid a time when people were saying that it was down, and it went without a hitch. All the affects were working, there were no stops and the ending was just the normal unload, no delays, no line of boats, just a good ride. If I could bottle that luck, I could make a fortune selling it at the door.

Anyway, I understand that a lot of the stuff in WDW is aging, especially in MK, that park has been operating 10 years longer then the rest of them in Florida. What really seems to upset me more is the attitude of people that somehow think that mechanical things will not breakdown, no matter what their age. And that huge complex engineered things are simple fixes when they do. Like someone can run inside, replace the rubber band that operates the ride and everything is fine within minutes. Preventive Maintenance is a phrase that is bantered about all the time, like that will absolutely guarantee absolute dependability at all times.

There is such a thing as absolute Preventive Maintenance that would possible head off most trouble, but, that would mean that the thing has to be rebuilt long before necessary bolt by bolt to the extent that it would have to be shut down 6 or more months a year to accomplish. And then there is regular sane PM that focuses in a high stress areas and attempts to stay ahead of wear by replacing known problem areas on a regular basis. That probably is about 10% of the overall ride. My bet is that is what they are doing and have been for years or none of that stuff would be working at all today. It is a disappointment when something like that happens during ones vacation, but, stuff like that happens and will continue to happen the older that the stuff gets. If anyone needs to understand it better, think about this the next time your car dies on the road after you have been careful to do all the maintenance faithfully and yet something unexpected gives out anyway. It is just machinery, it will break from time to time.

Sorry for the rant... but really, I know it's a fantasy park, but, it sits in the middle of reality.

Not sure what kind of magic we stumbled upon yesterday, but we rode POTC around 7:30 p.m. And the must and mermaids were both working. But what surprised us the most was that it was the first time in a couple years (at least 15 or so rides) that the boats did not stack up at the end.

I truly was in shock.

I will be extremely bummed if it's closed when we go, only because I think it's the only ride I have literally gone on at least once every single time I have visited since my first trip in 1987 at age 3, hahahah. That said, refurbs are important, especially when we're talking about a ride as old as Pirates, and I'd like to still be riding it in my 40s, so bring it on.

I had a similar experience tonight. One of the smoothest rides on Pirates in recent memory. Not a single stack up at the end. And the lighting looked terrific. Although it was down for the majority of the day...

Not true. In the past he has always been quoted as saying his two favorites were Pirates of the Caribbean and Soarin'.

Also even I get confused sometimes when people say Hollywood Studios. It makes me think of Universal or something. The REAL name is MGM.
