Main Street U.S.A. hub redevelopment at the Magic Kingdom

The upgrade to Main Street is needed. My family witnessed an accident here after the fireworks on Friday night's first show 2/28/14. (This was our first trip here.) Crowds of people were leaving the ramp/circle area and people were coming the other way to go to the next fireworks/castle show. So people traffic was crazy to say the least. To add to that, the area was not well lit. Walking on/off the sidewalk was tricky also.

We saw a woman miss the sidewalk curb and trip onto the street face first. Someone behind us asked her if she was ok but she didn't respond. Hopefully she got help (a food kiosk was nearby with workers) and who knows what injuries she had. I was and am disturbed by the incident and pray the woman is ok.

I pray that she is okay, too! I've been that person, pushed and shoved by the crowds after the fireworks right off of the curb in the hub. I was more fortunate than the poor woman you describe, as I happened to land on all fours. Still, I had to limp out of the Magic Kingdom with both knees bleeding profusely down my legs and into my socks and sneakers (people at the bus depot were kind enough to give us their spare kleenexes and wet wipes to clean myself up and create makeshift bandages), wondering aloud why on earth anyone would put a network of high curbs in an area that was wall-to-wall people and poorly lit. In a crowd that large and fast-moving, it's impossible to "watch where you're going". The hub area needs some revamping (curb-wise), if only for safety.

Not to sidetrack the conversation, but I'm curious if you were bleeding that badly, why didn't you go to First Aid? (I could see not wanting to try and swim upstream if it had happened in Town Square or outside the park, but First Aid is right there by the Hub...)

I didn't know about the First Aid station, but even if I had, in the moments after I fell I was kind of in shock and didn't know how badly I was scraped up. My initial focus was on getting up and moving with the crowd so I didn't get tripped upon or trampled over. (It was the night-before-Easter-Sunday, 2005, so this was no ordinary-size post-fireworks crowd.) Once I was up and stumbling along with the "flow of traffic" with my DH, we were trying to catch up with my sister and BIL, who were getting further and further ahead of us and didn't even know I'd fallen. Meanwhile, I was hurt, embarrassed and crying (not my most rational moment), and all I wanted was to get the heck out of there and get to a bus as fast as possible. I didn't realize how much I was bleeding until we got past the front gates and I was able to slow down and get a good look at myself.

We were able to laugh about it later, though -- we took a picture of my own personal "Massacre at Wounded Knee" (too soon?) on the bus on the way back to Coronado Springs, and when we made a musical slideshow of our trip pictures to share with the family after we got back, one of the songs we used was, "Don't You Forget About Me." We synced the line, "rain keeps falling, rain keeps falling down..." with that photo. (My first name is pronounced like "rain").

Pretty. There use to be GREEN all up and down Main Street USA. @ExtinctJenn has a great photo of the Hub with Cherry trees that I love everytime it pops up.

Been in The World the past 2 days and will be until late This Saturday afternoon. Going around the Hub and seeing a lot of refurb activity: empty moat, cleaning/fixing the castle (way up the sides), work out in front of Casey's and the walkway behind MSUSA. As you continue to walk around, it really adds up: 7DMT (obviously), rock work in NFL, out front of Cosmic Rays, right in back of the castle (don't know what that is), Splash Mountain, the 2nd ferry dock at the TTC, the monorail and the Poly DVC. I guess you throw in the new bus loading area and the newer bendy buses, as well as the less apparent stuff like Wifi and some of the sound speakers for the new parade. And then there is the new parade. Oh yeah, the Pinnochio Haus was closed too (don't know if that was for a refurb or if it just isn't always open). And finally, everyone's favorite - MyMagic+.

There is a lot of work going on and the hub project is just a part of it in the MK area of The World. Is this typical to have this much going on? Everywhere you look something different is being worked on. I didn't even mention the various scrims that are up in front if some of the buildings. It is crazy.

Pinnochio's Village Haus is closed until March 31st I believe for a refurb.

There's also the new walkway in Libery Square that's being worked on right now as well.

That picture is an obvious fake. Photoshop. Disney does not allow trees like that.
I live in a subdivision that was built in 1985. Lots of nice 2 story brick homes and plenty of trees. However, the majority of houses have cut down large hardwood trees over the last ten years. They have grown so large they obscure the houses, kill the grass underneath and suffer from weather related damage. Many are too close to the houses and can cause damage or the shade encourages mold or algae growth.

While we love trees, the truth is that unless they are in a large open area, eventually they grow to big to be used in landscaped areas. For MK, the trees on MSUSA eventually grow to large and obscure the buildings and run the risk of causing damage from tropical storm winds. The hub might be a large area, but big trees attract more birds and result in upset guests who get "blessed" while standing under a tree. Mature trees become more difficult to trim, require more maintenance and create more debris.

While it would be nice to have more trees in the park, it is unrealistic to think that TDO could maintain large mature trees in guest traffic areas. Even without a castle projection show, we would likely be on the third generation of trees.

How does that explain how Disneyland maintains large trees, some dating back to the 1950s, in their park? Or how WDW did until about 10 years ago?

Of course trees need maintenance, and even replacement. That's why they even built a tree farm back when WDW opened to grow additional trees so that mature trees would be ready to replace trees that came down.

I just don't follow how one set of rules about trees applied in WDW until about 2004, and a slash and burn approach followed.

they could pull a "smart" movement with the new moat construction. Can you imagine if they added led illuminated floor lightning and safety lines?

wait what all I see are attractive men.

What were we talking about? These guys ripping down the castle? Ok.
So, this is Disney' technique to prevent "bad reviews" from soccer moms ? ;)
