News Main Street Photo Supply Co. Being Replaced By Plaza Point Holiday Shoppe

found this interesting from MC:

“That has us wondering what will happen to the Christmas Shoppe in Fantasyland. The store was hastily shoehorned into the former Heraldry Shoppe (run by a 3rd party company), which in turn was booted out because Disney wanted to turn the space into FastPass Distribution for Peter Pan. When those plans were dashed by the realization that FastPass would just make the standby lines even longer, clogging Fantasyland walkways, Christmas merchandise was rushed into the store without the typical care and design expected from Disneyland’s shopping outlets. We hope to see this location given an overhaul, and while we’d love to see a villains shop here, whatever goes in deserves a little more thought and design effort.”

It's crazy that as recently as 2006 (I was in Highschool) I remember buying a disposable camera for a trip to Disneyland. Do they still even sell disposable cameras?

I was watching an older HBO show the other day and someone on the show said take a picture of us. They reached into their purse and my mind went to them pulling out their phone but they pull out this camera and it seems so antiquated now.

Is the Fantasyland Christmas Shop in a location that could be used to extend the Pan queue?
Red is current Peter Pan queue and blue is the Christmas Shop:

But I also don't like how this concept is sill dominated by Christmas, when many holidays are now represented in our society and the inclusion of those is still often miniscule compared to Santa, Baby Jesus, Charles Dickens, etc.

Like what? Halloween? Easter bunnies?

They'll swap out the displays as the months and seasons click along.

But since only 1.9% of Americans are Jewish, I wouldn't expect to see more than 1.9% of sales for Hanukkah. (And since the two Jewish friends I know also put up Christmas trees, that's not helping. I've got to remember to make fun of them for that in December!)

The percentage of Americans who are Muslim is even smaller than the Jews; 1.1% as of 2020. About 1% of the market isn't really enough to build a business case around.

Even less than that, 1.0%, of Americans are Hindu. So there won't really be a huge market for Diwali decorations. Do they even have decorations for Diwali? What is Diwali? I have no clue, as I'm barely Protestant (and bad at it).

I know it's super hip to claim you are multi-cultural. But at some point we have to realize there are pure business decisions around this type of thing. We've all seen the lonely six feet of shelving at Target with the Hanukah stuff that no one buys, while the Christmas decorations all get bought out by November 28th. It's an inconvenient truth, but there it is.

What's the point of putting up displays of Diwali and Eid-al-Fitr (yes, I had to Google that, as 98% of Americans would) to sit there ignored and un-purchased? To prove to someone on Instagram that someone doesn't celebrate Christmas? That's just dumb.

This is a free-market business decision. If you are basing business plans on tiny slices of the American demographic that range from 1.9% (Jewish) to 1.1% (Muslim), you aren't going to make your quarterly goal.

It would be better to just go all in for Christmas, because 98% of America celebrates Christmas.

And both Charles Dickens and Baby Jesus thank you in advance.

Then just call it a Christmas Shop. Using the word holiday to promote diversity is pretty shallow when you really just mean CHRISTMAS.

The amazon toy book came to basically every home in America in the last few weeks. I found it funny but on brand that although it was obviously for Christmas it attempted to be vaguely winter oriented...no santa hats or really even presents or symbols, just woodland critters in cozy clothes.

The most depressing thing to me about Christmas is that it's the same rubbish every year and this shop will probably be like most any theme park Christmas gift shop. But it says *holiday* so it must be diverse?

Ah, I get it. I agree with you. I wish our big companies could just say what they mean now.

It's a shop selling Christmas ornaments. So wouldn't it be refreshing to call it a Christmas shop?

But then, you may have missed the official Press Release that said only "careful observers" will be able to spot the non-Christmas merchandise hidden around the store.

Was that what that was??? I got a magazine type thing in the mail a few days ago from Amazon, and I thumbed through it for 4 seconds and all I saw was very plump women wearing sweaters. No toys that I saw, nothing I'd want to buy, maybe I got some boring adult version? I tossed it into the trash immediately. I had absolutely no idea that was supposed to be anything remotely Christmas themed, or remotely attractive.

I should have kept it for laughs.

No, they won't use "Christmas" as a label. Why do you think MVMCP is now DVMAH? Couldn't have "that" word around anymore.

But if you're saying MERRY it's very obviously CHRISTMAS.

FESTIVUS for the REST OF US

What I always find bizarre is how the overseas Disney parks have the guts to just come right out and say what it is they are celebrating.

Here's Tokyo Disneyland's main entrance, where everything in December is branded with the word "Christmas" because, well, it's Christmastime.

Or the entrance to Disneyland Paris, where they even spell it out in English for the French.

I can't imagine Candlelight Processional still existing five years from now. Fully expect this to turn into "The Holiday Stroll*" :p

*special cupcake and Magic Key-exclusive light-up candle toy available** with purchase of dessert party package!

**for additional charge

Yeah, I really do wonder how long the Candlelight Processional can hang on.

Saw this on TikTok just now.

So a window display with two women ice skating is lgbtq representation and a little girl in a doorway is mixed race representation.

I like to see any representation, but Disney becoming more inclusive but just with retail decorations...it's a miss for me...
