MagicBand+ announced

I personally won’t be buying these for myself or my family only because I’m too lazy to charge yet another device in my hotel room every night 🤣 The price seems fair for what (little) it offers so as long standard magic bands continue to be made in the $10-$25 range, I’ll happily stick with those.

Oh, don't worry about profitability. These little plastic trinkets are based on absolutely ancient technology, and even adding little lights and vibration to the newer ones doesn't change that. I'd love if one of our insiders actually had some idea (@marni1971 ?) but I would be willing to guess even with printing, packaging, etc. - these little suckers cost Disney less than the price of a Dole Whip to produce.

I have no doubt they are nearly as profitable as the pins, or Disney wouldn't be pushing them so hard.

$6 USD for a Dole Whip.

I'd still prefer a card, but that's just me. I already have a watch (not an electronic one, either), I didn't want another thing to wear. I understand some of the conveniences, but this is just fleecing the sheep now with something that has no additional value.

The original band was less than half the price of a dole whip. Add inflation and greed for the new price.

I agree with the sentiments that it offers more than a regular band for a very modest price increase.
It's not just lighting up. There's some park interactions, other stuff you can read about.

With the amount they are charging, I think it successfully meets "plus" criteria.
I guess my mileage varies on this one. I’ve read about it and, to put it a bit harshly, it looks pretty lame to me.

They haven't marketed it much at all. What have we seen, one press release and a couple of blog posts? Any hype about MB+ being the most amazing, spectacular, life-changing thing ever was generated by the fan community, not Disney marketing.

They were pushing it when media was in for the Guardian s opening, they had a big booth for it at Destination D23, etc

I agree not tons of wide marketing but they have done a lot of targeted stuff to get excitement up and push it

To me calling it “plus” and then releasing a product that’s a bit of a dud is enough for me to say it’s a misstep. I would say the same if they decided to offer an upgraded prix fixe menu, calling it the “Diamond Menu” but only added tomato soup in a fake diamond bowl. Even if it involved no marketing. My thought is - talk a big game, label wise, be prepared to deliver. And do the opposite too - add impressive things where people aren’t expecting them, no hype involved, to show you’re just that cool. But again, just my take.

Success will be judged by how much money it makes. I think from a consumer perspective, it is a luke warm product, but sometimes that doesn't matter.

I just mean stylistically, the hyped up names with the “meh” products come across as a bit carnival barky to me. (Or maybe I’m old- maybe it’s meant to be a marketing style for the generation that loves overpriced bottle service and private igloos just to feel swanky for the night.) Which is why this approach is a miss for me - but again, others mileage may vary.

Again, not to nitpick. A Magic Band is a pretty minor thing. In the big ticket areas, like food and rides, I think Disney has made mind blowing strides over the years. So I try to keep it in perspective. I just don’t like some of their recent marketing trends. But, like I said, maybe I’m just old. The generation that’s young now does seem to be more into “swag” for it’s own sake, whether it has much function or not.

I'm going to buy a MB+ to save money.

This way, I won't have to buy a MB 2.0 every two years due to a depleted battery. In just two years, it is the cheaper option.

If people don't make use of what a MB 2.0 can do, then just hold onto your one and only MB 1.0. and spend nothing more.

From an environmental point of view, less plastic and batteries are introduced into the world.

A little birdie says there will be 16 designs at launch, none of which are limited edition so should be readily available:

Is there still a discount for people staying on resort and a website that allows you to purchase them ahead of time? I saw on the FAQ that there would be a discount.. but how much? And have they shown up yet on that site?

I wonder how long these rechargeables will last in recharge cycles. Imagine now you have to pay double and the thing just turns into a brick in 3 years rather than 2.

My understanding is that it all rolls out tomorrow. These will be available to purchase as an add-on to your package (I think with a discount); on Shop Disney; or in the stores previously mentioned. Inventory in stores may be limited, but they sound confident that they have enough inventory to meet the online purchases.

That said, I (a) 100% expect there to be a mad dash rush tomorrow; (b) trust Disney IT about as far as I could kick the recently-demolished ToT billboard; thus (c) would anticipate plenty of "fun" tomorrow trying to secure these.

I'm having my wife and daughter pick the ones they want tonight and plan to buy first thing tomorrow for our December trip. Yes, I know I'm part of the problem. Don't @ me. I like all the side games in Batuu, so I'm looking forward to hunting bounties.

Edited to fix some horrific there/their grammar.
