Magic Kingdom Tree Massacre

Pumbas Nakasak

Heading for the great escape.
or opposite of that, the trees lower under ground removing them from those who might want to see half of some special effect.

Not lower, but split like bannana skin, the trunk sections then become a ramp for ECVs, though the possibility of high flying grannies with no throtle control may be a show stopper

Heck, while were at it, put all the tools who ride them but dont need them in a LSM Launch and fire them over the castle for the finale. :D

I remember an article about the building of the Magic Kingdom in either Popular Science or Popular Mechanics around 1971. In the article they had a picture from the utilidors of giant containers that contained the roots of the trees above ground.

I wonder if they are still there and used?

I have searched and searched for that article to no avail though.

With the Central Plaza looking more denuded than ever (especially the center hub), I thought it would be appropriate to revisit this topic.

Current:

Tomorrowland & Contemporary clearly visible from within Liberty Square (formerly blocked by Hub trees):

Going back in time.

As recently as 2002, with shade trees showing 30 years of growth:

Wow! Had completely forgotten how it looked with the trees!

Not sure which way I like it. It's great that the sight line to the Castle (and Wishes) is clear but I love the ambiance (and shade) of the trees.

Is it just me, or has this thread been pruned back quite a bit ... you know like an overgrown bush ... that's preventing you from seeing fireworks?

(actually, it seems more like loggers in the Amazon rainforests!)

I think its something to do with the fact that its more popular with the younger crowd to favour personal topiary in the style of a south american country famous for carnival.

Yeah ... like a park ... instead of a vast concrete wasteland with Disney crap stores lining the route to the giant fiberglass castle.

You don't change the entire feel of a park ... and remove shade simply to improve viewing for a temporary pyro show.

Of course the MK is case study of what you do do if you wish to Walmart an amazing place and make it much more mundane and dumb.

I amend my vote.

Keep the Trees. Just trim them so that the Castle and it's ramparts are not completely blocked.

(Basically, lop the tops off.)

Agree. I'm not against the trees themselves, but I really don't like how they look in the "before" pictures in the OP. It looks way too overgrown and is blocking too much of the castle for my taste. They needed to be trimmed down, but not removed.

Unless you were standing in the tree hub, then I'd say you'd have trouble viewing Wishes, but with the photos of looking down Main Street, the trees don't even surpass the height of the castle's lowest spires! There's no way, even if they were still there that they would effect viewing Wishes from Main Street, where so many people watch it from, and the show almost 100% designed with Main Street in mind as its rather strange to watch it from Tomorrowland or Adventureland.

The trees added shade and gave a park-like setting to the hub, as they got bigger in the 80s and 90s, the trees starting to block out the Contemporary from Liberty Square.

The trees were a transition....you walked down Main Street, saw the castle, but the bottom of it was partly hidden behind trees...the prize was in sight, you just had to keep going toward, keeping walking, then into the hub, past the clearing in the trees and there it was, the castle towering over you.

They were slaughtered because some fanbois needed to see Wishes ... ICK!!!

Do we have a chainsaw smiley? No ... we should send JT to get one ... at say a Home Depot in Alaska!

Is a horse insane because it does not eat the food you give it. Can it be that the horse actually does not like the food.
Surely not! Anything that defers food must be insane!

Um ... it's a little late for that, Lucy.

They were all lopped off ... kind of like what Renee did to that Russian arms dealer Monday night!

Nothing will be overgrown for a very long time now.

God, I just miss that view ... lush greenery replaced by concrete.

Magical!:hammer::brick::cry:

I have no idea what your issues with the diets of horsies has to do with anything and I'm getting tired ... but for coming up with that uber-kewl smiley, you get my poster of the week award.

Congrats! But that's all you get!

(you don't happen to have a lawn-mowing smiley? we could use that for discussions on waxing!:D)

Ok, you're right. I wasn't really talking about that, though, I was really just making a comment about the sets of photos in the OP, and my personal preferences regarding them. And also about something someone else said... agreeing with him/her that the trees were good, but not all overgrown like they were in those pics, and that they should have been trimmed down, but not taken away.

I haven't had time to read this whole thread or follow the entire "saga of the trees" :ROFLOL: so I'm not really sure what happened when... what got removed or lopped off... Sorry if I said something stupid! :o

P.S. I actually don't like the idea of any trees being cut down... "Tree" was my nickname in high school! :p

In actuality, nor do I. I'm a very "green" person. (I hear Spirit taking aim for that one.) But, I do think that it is slightly justified so that a show as big as Wishes can be seen. There should have been alternatives, though.

Oh me too. I'd be annoyed if I couldn't see all of Wishes because there was trees all in the way.
