The castle float is pretty alive still, I remember they used it a few times during the 24 hour events.

Anyway If they really do not want to ditch MSEP.. they could update it like Tokyo does constantly.
There were attempts at MSEP adding new floats in the 80's. The only real addition to MSEP was the Seven Dwarfs Mine Cart and Mine, the Dumbo Circus section and Pleasure Island which was the replacement for the Pinocchio underwater section as seen in this video.

The rest were temporary such as Return To OZ (Which later got burned down), a short-lived section promoting The Fox And The Hound, Mickey's 60th Birthday Float (Exclusive at Disneyland) that was made during Mickey's 60th Birthday in late 1988, and one float that was created to honor Disneyland's 25th Anniversary (The music for the float exists, but photos are hard to find). The last was a float following the title unit for Disneyland's 35th Anniversary.

That’s more a marketing decision. I guess if they really wanted to call it Paint the Night: Celebrate! they could. But it’s not a carbon copy of another parade.

Would you say we will likely get a parade that looks like Paint the Night but different floats and different name? As most would agree I’d prefer the elaborate Dreamlights style. Not a rave party and more fitting for the MK.

Don't forget the 15th Birthday float for WDW!

Speaking of early 80's MSEP. There's a wonderful video on YT with 2 showings, along with a trip to EPCOT CENTER from 1983!:

After that video, MK should have kept the underwater unit until Spectro, it had a wonderful soundtrack!

OK, now here is the question. If Main Street Electrical Parade is tired and dated and should not be brought back, can someone tell me why Horizons should be brought back?
I don't think anyone wanting Horizons back actually wants an exact 1:1 clone of the original with no improvements or changes as if it was literally right out of the early 80s. Though to be quite honest, that would still be a thousand times better than Mission Space (yes really).

The general desire from Horizons fans is a ride based on the original but with the future scenery updated and plussed somewhat. This was actually the plan in the mid-late 90s before Mission Space was greenlit. It was planned to give it a major update like the several Spaceship Earth has gotten. And it honestly wouldn't need to be that drastic to have been fresh again. A lot of the basic concepts of Horizons still feel very futuristic and cool. Underwater cities, space colonies, desert agriculture etc. We're still not any closer to that, but I definitely think people are still very into those basic ideas.

MSEP is tired and dated because it largely hasn't changed much since the 70s. Had they kept updating and plussing it, we would not have this complaint. Tokyo Dreamlights stands as a shining example of how to do it properly. It's basically MSEP at its core, but they have continually improved it over the years. Literally every couple years they add a new float and refurbish classic ones with new lighting tech. As a result, it is currently the best night parade in the world.

I want to see a return of Spectromagic, but I wouldn't want them to just clone it 1:1 right down to the early 90s lighting tech. I'd expect an updated take similar to what Dreamlights did for MSEP.

Here's another video of MSEP from 1984 that has clearer audio and better quality of the Underwater Pinocchio section.

Because...
  • It was the spiritual sequel to Carousel of Progress
  • It was the embodiment of all of Epcot's Future World (w/ themes of Communication, Land, Seas, Space, etc)
  • Great concept (1st half - Visions of the future from the past. 2nd half was our 20th Century version of the future)
  • 2 giant OmniMax screens that riders were immersed into.
  • Unique ride vehicle that faced out and brought rides very close to the sets.
  • Elevated track sections that allowed riders to look up, straight and down at sets. (See Neon city scene, OmniMax theater)
  • Choose your own ending
  • Highest throughput of any Disney attraction (except maybe for WoM)
  • Many AA's placed in physical sets
  • Best tagline for an attraction: "If we can dream it, we can do it".
That's just off the top of my head.

Of course, if it would have been refurbed regularly and didn't lose its sponsor, it could still be entertaining guests today

And MSEP is a parade. A parade I have a nostalgic feeling for, but one that has got to go.

MSEP has been around for over 40 YEARS and it won't die!

Horizon opened in Oct. '83 and closed full-time operations in 94, then sporadically opened to final closure in 1999. That is barely 11 years of operation or 16 years if you count all the half-open times.

Horizons left us too soon!:cry::cry:

They REALLY like dance party music in MK.

FWIW, I love the Paint the Night soundtrack. I find it to be a reasonable progression considering MSEP’s soundtrack was also club musicky and trippy for the ‘70s. Right through 2016, it still convinced us to “put [our] hands up ‘cuz the night is young.” And now they are making a parade for a celebration where they will want us to be asking, “when can we do this again?”

For all the whining that it’s “too Pixar,” over half is Disney.

I think it will be stylistically similar to Paint the Night. Different floats. I assume Owl City is available if they need him. They already snuck his song into the Disney Springs area music loop while we weren’t paying attention.

So really this just sounds like a newer version of paint the night....please no screaming dj's though like in move it shake it.... I am fine with progression but would like to see something truly grand and mesmerizing like spectro or dreamlights, rock pop owl city is not it, and I like owl city. I dont think they know what grand and mesmerizing is anymore.

I like PTN and am fine if it goes in that direction or the more Spectro direction . Just give me a good night parade. And no DJs.

Honestly, do people actually enjoy these DJ dance parties?

Disney says they do, because I think people will eat up whatever they throw out there lol, because "its there".... and the dj thing is cheap. :banghead:

I've just become a little more disappointed. LOL.

The soundtrack is fine, I don't need the Hoedown. But they need to be looking at Dreamlights as the go to not Paint The Night.

For me, Pixar is out of place in Disneyland because the parade more represents the park next door better. Not that I hate seeing Pixar in the parade. That being said I don't think a regular parade like MSEP or Dreamlights would feel right in DCA but it would be right at home in Disneyland. Just my own personal preferences.

I hope they will pick franchises closely paired with park content. In our case, that includes Monsters, Inc, Toy Story, Dumbo, Pooh, Snow White, Mermaid, BatB, Pan, Tangled, any of the PhilharMagic classics. If we include Happily Ever After, everything is an option...

What if they had floats for some rides?! It’ll never happen. But it should. At least there’s Boo to You for that.

Agreed with you. I hope they pick the right franchises to represent. I personally just want something in length and scope of Dreamlights, Spectro, MSEP. Paint the Night, while it has impressive tech and impressive units, it still feels lacking a little bit to me, even though it's good (like the feeling with daytime parade floats, that you feel like they could have used a few more even though the parade as is is great).

Floats for rides would be fantastic. Haunted Mansion would be great. But it'll never happen. I agree it should. At least Dreamlights has a nod to It's a Small World.

Now that I think about it, Winnie The Pooh throughout WDW parade history only has a single float that's been used the late 80's and early 90's and lasted till the Boo To You Parade before getting removed years later. It was also the only time you would ever see Owl or Kanga and Roo out at the parks not counting Paris.

You forgot one thing...the music! Like all EC attractions, the music was great and stuck out instead of being background noise.

*I just grabbed one of the first results on Youtube*

Oh, how could I forget the wonderful music! It really brings back memories listening to it.
Like I said it was just off the top of my head. I am sure there are many other reasons I missed.

***tries to get back on topic after realizing we are in the MK 50th plans thread.

Sadly, no Horizons coming for WDW's 50th.

Great and exciting week ahead for DL fans who live by or visit DL often as they get Paint The Night back! Very salty about this and it makes me even more irritated with WDW lol I mean yeah as we already discussed there is the Potential for WDW to get there own PTN version for the 50th... 3 years away . I hope it’ll be worth the wait and top the current version of PTN! WDW deserves it and other new entertainment after all the attention DL has been receiving lately.
