Magic Key Renewals?

From page 7 of today's earnings call statement...

"The increase in average per capita ticket revenue was due to the introduction of Genie+ and Lightning Lane in the first quarter of the current fiscal year and a reduced impact from promotions at Walt Disney World Resort, partially offset by an unfavorable attendance mix at Disneyland Resort."

They're throwing Anaheim under the bus for this quarter. Not a good sign for the Magic Key Kids.

Also means people are not buying single day tickets at full price or at the discounted rate.

Seems like Disney has a pricing problem at Disneyland.

This absolutely, positively says its over for APs on BOTH coasts!
At WDW, they are making money, therefore does not need the AP.
At DLR they do not make enough money from APs, therefore does not need the AP.

And yet, playing Devil's advocate.... when have they ever made enough money from AP's at Disneyland?

The AP demographic doesn't spend nearly as much money as the domestic tourist market, and the domestic tourists don't spend as much money as international tourists.

Disneyland does well with tourists from Seattle and Salt Lake, and absolutely gushes with profit when the tourists from Sydney and Seoul show up.

But when the AP families from Santa Ana and San Pedro show up, they smuggle in carrot sticks for snacks and go off-property for meals. And buying a sweatshirt at World of Disney twice per year doesn't make up for that.

That's a problem for Disneyland as old as time. Which is why the Magic Key experiment was so interesting to watch unfold. And now perhaps they are folding it back up? Who knows?!? I don't envy them.

If it’s so unfavorable why do they keep the AP program running year after year after year?

If they do get rid of the program, which I highly doubt, I would immediately find the silver lining as they would be saving me about $500- $1000 a month.

Anyway, I think their will always be some version of an Annual Pass program available for So Cal residents and I think it will be announced sooner than later.

That's a question as old as time.

What makes me chuckle though is how the financial team regularly calls out the AP crowds in Anaheim as being an "unfavorable attendance mix", or whatever not-so-vague jab they want to demean AP's as.

They try and sell as many AP's as possible, the marketing team pretends the AP's are "family", then Burbank's sharp pencil boys make an unimpressed dig at them in the earning's reports. Round and round they go!

It's hysterical really. What does TDA want exactly? Make up your darn mind. 🤣

Lol. Just really speaks to the revolving door they have with the park executives and how their seems to be no kind of mid-long term game plan at all.

Yes. That's it exactly.

Over in the Recession thread this came up, as I fear that could lead to weird-o strategies, or repeating past mistakes in a panic.

Coupled with some of the very troubling things they've been doing in the parks since Covid (breaking all their own theme rules, shoving Costco Snack Bar tables into themed environments, sloppy and messy Mobile Order, App based insanity, etc., etc.) it makes you wonder who is in charge and if they even know what they're in charge of. 🤔

Haha by any chance have you seen my post on the new photo shoots they re doing in planters in front of the castle for $99 during normal operating hours? New levels of tackiness.

Oh. My. Gawd. Just when you think you've seen everything... I don't even have words. 🧐

I know right. This goes right up near the very top of the list when it comes to worst decisions they’ve made recently and perhaps one of the very best examples of how they forgot what a big deal “show” used to be. They re more concerned with the Tiki room bird accents being problematic. Or too busy coming up with a 7 year game plan on how to remove the Indians from Peter Pans flight while scheduling the 358 meetings with various tribes across the country to see how to best approach the task. Yet photo shoots in planters are greenlit just like that! Lol

I wonder how many meetings they had to have before they decided changing Main Street to Mickey Ave was a bad idea? Yet the Sears catalogue photo shoot in a planter in front of the castle made the cut.

I think for a long time success at the parks was measured by attendance and it was assumed everyone who showed up spent enough money, so it was thought, the higher the attendance, the more money they are bringing in.

It seems that Disney Data is now really looking at the "per capita ticket revenue"

Bob Chapek made an interesting and seemingly valid point on today's earning's call when he talked about their current ticketing reservation system. Previously, they released ticket prices and ticket menus only a few times per year, and then they were stuck with them. Now, they can adjust and leverage ticket prices based on real-time reservations data and smooth out the attendance spikes and dips in advance. And adjust prices almost instantly to get their desired result. It helps them plan better, which doesn't explain why the parks operation is still so messy, but at least it tells me they are trying.

Rarely does Chapek seem to have a good point, but on that one he, well, has a good point.

Thank you, I'm now humming it on a loop. 🤨

The sharp pencils didn't call out the attendance mix in WDW, just Disneyland which from attendance numbers is still a local park. There are ~23 million people in Southern California that can be locals ;)

I think in a way they spoke about AP on both coasts.
For WDW they said reduced impact from promotions, this sounds like they ran less promotions and as a result made more money, promotions to me means stopping annual passes purchased mostly by locals.

We already know what they think about DLR locals. They want them to pay the full gate price like everyone else.

Just my opinion. Disney does not care about the locals on either coast.

'Promotions' entails discounts, for sure.
WDW used to regularly run discounted room and vacation package offers seasonally.
Resort room discounts, 'free' dining offers, five day tix for the piece of a three day, etc.

Since the Covid Apocolypse, WDW has offered very few promotional discounts to the general public.
So most Guests are buying fully priced rack rate rooms and non-discounted admission.
Another reason that I am sure is contributing to the '40% increase'.
