Just finished correcting the Algebra test. Now to make up yet another one for those who still don't get it. It's really frustrating trying to teach some of these kids who are just not ready for it yet. I really have to spoon-feed some of it now, and at this point, they should not need that.

Abby's really struggling with math this year....she's in pre-algebra, and I don't know, but I think she has a real problem with logically figuring out what to do, y'know? She panics, stresses, and gives up on herself. And part of the problem is that they're teaching a totally different way from how I learned, so I don't feel like I'm much help. They're doing geometry in 7th grade, for pity's sakes! I didn't have that until I was a sophomore!

Our kids have the option of taking Algebra 1 in 8th grade in my school (my kids took it in 7th in public school). The thing is every parent thinks their child is a genius because they did well in elementary math, but the simple fact is that not every one is ready developmentally for it yet. It is a whole different thought process, and pre-Algebra is a good preparation for that process if done right. I have a few kids whose parents insisted that they be put into Algebra this year, and the kids are really struggling because of that. If they had allowed me to place them in Pre-Algebra instead, the kids would be so much better off, and so much better prepared to take Algebra 1 in the 9th grade.

Math has always been Abby's weakest subject (Joel's too, for that matter).
What I've bolded seems to be an issue....I don't like to be critical of teachers, but he doesn't seem to want to take the time to explain things thoroughly...that's what the textbook is for, in his mind. We're thinking of getting Ab a tutor.

Just wanted to answer that too. I've seen a lot of teachers like that - in fact I even did a long-term sub job for one (who was eventually fired, but that's a long story in itself). She wanted the kids to learn at their own pace, so every kid in that class was on a different topic - they took the book test when they were "ready", and basically just di whatever the heck they wanted to in class, so chaos reigned. The kids had absolutely no clue about what they were doing, much less why they were doing it.
It might be a good idea to get a tutor for Abby even if it's just to boost her confidence. Does the high school have any kind of student tutor program that could help her?

Joel's school principal is also a friend, and I asked her for some ideas. Need to touch base with her again on that. She said that she heard some things about Ab's teacher that was in line with my impressions. So I'm not too far off the mark about him.

Thought we were shredding the gnar?

:ROFLOL:

So I just slipped going down the stairs w/ laundry and landed smack on my biscuit/tailbone. OUCH! And what does DH say??? "Good thing you still have some extra padding back there"

:eek::fork: He's SO sleeping out in the snow tonight

Ooo, that's low

Yes.
Let us shred some gnar. But we'll have to do it quicker than we went through this thread, or we'll be shredding well past Easter.

:ROFLOL::ROFLOL:

Evening, Magic folks. Had my first day of training at Great Movie Ride today. I'm already falling in love with working there, it is that great. I did see Joanna today and let's just say we kind of scared people in the break room with the excitement we had at seeing each other. :ROFLOL:

Tomorrow, I begin the Tour Guide portion of my training. Today was an overview of the other positions involved like Front Usher, Head Usher, ADA, ADB, and Casting Director. Can't wait!

Yeah, poor Erik and Wes

That's so cool! and how great for Joanna to have you around too! :sohappy:

It sure is! :sohappy:
