I saw an interesting link at the bottom of the discussion forums under News:
http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20100211/ap_on_he_me/us_med_asperger_s_diagnosis
Of most interest to me was this one paragraph:
'But Kelli Gibson of Battle Creek, Mich., whose four sons have different forms of autism, thinks it would. She says the revision could make services now designated just for kids with an "autism" diagnosis available to less severely affected kids — including those with Asperger's and a variation called
pervasive developmental disorder-not otherwise specified'
PDD-NOS is Joel's diagnosis. I also have a friend whose son is in Joel's class and has Asperger's. Because of that, he's considered higher functioning and hasn't received additional services for speech and such. Well now, he's regressing a bit...stuttering, dealing with tics, and more sensory seeking behaviors. Because of this, he's finally getting the speech he needs and will have an IEP that addressed these issues.
