Loop Holes in Mission: SPACE

I push all those buttons like crazy and pretend we're going to crash horribly if I don't!

It feels like I'm there, playing my part, and the ride is not doing its bit. It's not acknowledging my efforts in the slightest manner. At least let a light on the screen light up, or ring a sound, or vibrate something! Anything!
I'd like it if someone gave me a little badge while saluting when the doors open.

But should that detract from an appreciation of the ride?

EPCOT was originally meant to be a city. But it isn´t. Doesn´t mean the theme park isn´t phenomenal.

At some point they decided to build something else than originally planned. Then this plan B gets developed, becomes a labour of love, becomes an entity of its own. Unbuild aspects lose their relevance.
Even if those plans are grandiose, should it detract from what did get build? If suddenly even bigger plans than the one with M:S as a preshow were to emerge, does that mean we should disdain M:S even less so than before?
Not at all. Taken as is, it's a great attraction. Knowing what it once was and what it was proposed to be taints it a little. Like the Imagination pavilion.

But then where does theme vs cost saving stop or meet? Exposed services. No ceilings. Bland corridors. Exposed ride system. Industrial or less expensive?

You do realize that this was just a Tie-in for Touchstone Pictures Ill fated Box office Flop.

And what a Coincidence that Gary Sinise is in the film and His Character Survived (But,They don't want to Admit that this is based on the film)...

You know...the last time I was watching the preshow I was thinking: "Wasn't Gary Sinise in that Mars movie?" And I never second guessed it, just brushed it off...makes sense now.

The issue for me is that the ride itself doesn't pretend it is an actual Mars landing!

I'm very willing to suspend disbelief at WDW. Just tell me are going to Mars for real! Don't destroy the magic by the ride itself saying it is nothing but a training mission in front of a computer screen!

'...'cause this here's the wildest roller coaster ride in the fake rock wilderness....'
The epic background music? The sentimental song at the end(see below)? For a training mission? What's there to be sentimental about? You didn't experience any real danger.

Oh well, at least the background music sounds good in the Epcot entrance loop...

If everything were exactly the same, except the story was that you were really going to Mars and there was some kind of effect where you could see this massive shuttle-rocket contraption tower above you as you were loading instead of just seeing the boring old capsule... I think I would love this ride.

Do you like anything in WDW or are you a West Coaster here trolling this site?
I grew up in Orlando Florida and yes I enjoy some things in WDW still... though its a limited list nowadays because they took a crap on everything down there since I left. I live in Nebraska now and visit the West Coast instead because I'm paying money for a quality product instead of a tired broken jalopy.

When was the last time that you actually stepped foot on property?

I like the words to the song, but you're right, the person singing it? is a bit Disney Radio like? "On Hero's wings we fly. Reaching out. The future's in our hands. Destiny begins with you and me!" I still kinda like it though.;)
BTW, I like Mission Space too. It's not my favorite, but I don't hate it! I guess when I'm riding it w/ my kids, we pretend we're actually working together to fly into space. It's kinda cool "playing " w/ the joystick and such! LOL.:D

I have mentioned this on another thread before, but the first time that I road this attraction, I pulled back on the joystick and pressed the buttons as though the ride would shut down if I didn't participate. I realized that it was all unnecessary the second time when a kid next to me didn't do his part. Yeah, I'm a major dork. But...you know, cool.

I always new it wasn't doing anything but for me it always added to the ride. It's called participation, even if it isn't real. If you did the actions that they suggested when they suggested it, you actually did feel the results (yes, even though it would have happened if you hadn't push or pulled anything). In fact, I told my grandson that it was important to push the buttons, but if he forgot or didn't react on them the computer would take over for him and do it anyway. It was just more fun to do the assigned job.

The whole simulation thing could have been solved by just saying that we were the first "civilian" flyers to go to Mars. I truly doubt that many people felt that they were actually taking a rocket to Mars anyway. Or maybe by emphasizing simulator, it prevented a lot of kids from wetting themselves thinking it was really happening.

I rather enjoyed that movie....

Quirky, weird, sentimental near the end. But it was a good two(?) hours spend.

I love me some cheesy Disney songs, but Destiny is indeed crossing over into Disney Radio territory. The singer sounds like some tween star that nobody above the age of fourteen should legally be subjected to.

The joysticks are fun. They also serve another purpose: they give me something to grab hold off and squeeze, because, however much I like M:S, I am terrified of that thing. I get claustrophobic, am afraid the ride will get stuck in 'spinning position', have all sorts of doom scenarios running through my head. I'm afraid in M:S in the wrong kind of way. The way some coasters terrify you not for their thrills but because you mistrust the restraint and fear you will fall out.

I still ride that puppy though! There is something addictive about those g-forces! A feeling both awful and hypnotising.
