Longest training run before running your first Full Marathon?

Nick got me hooked on the Honey Stinger's instead of GU packets. They taste just like real honey and not a pack of fake, plastic GU stuff.

Thanks for the mention!

Honey Stinger will do the trick to replace the calories. I know I go into a calorie deficit on my long runs (sometimes over 2000 cals burned in one run). Gatorade endurance powder mix works well too; replaces alot of the sodium lost and some calories too.

I stick with GU and standard Power/Gatorade on long runs, along with maybe a Powerbar to begin with. So far, no worries...but tomorrow is a new long for me at 18 miles, so we'll see!

Good Luck with your 18 miler, I'll be hitting that next Wednesday. Let us know how it goes and what products you used to replenish your body.

Good Luck again,
Frank

fake plastic GU has never led me wrong or left me cramping and puking on the side of the road. :lookaroun
Doug, you have to try the Honey Stinker. It tastes good, seriously.

Thanks for telling me and giving me reference to it. Awesome stuff. Hard for me to do GU at 6am, but HS goes down nice.

Thanks for the well wishes. I just got back. Some of the details of how it went are on my DM account here.

But as for nutrition, here's how it went. I woke up and had a breakfast of champions (Lucky Charms with skim milk :lookaroun) before heading out...about 160 calories.

On my way to the trail, I stopped to pick up a couple Powerbars and had one on the way down. Vanilla Yogurt high protein if that matters to you...300 calories.

I also "ate" a GU pack (100 calories) before leaving the house as I always do.

Along the way today, I had a GU every 45 minutes as recommended. A total of 4 more, for another 400 calories. I also carried 45 oz. of Gatorade and drank it all...275 calories, roughly.

If you add it all up, I took in about 1,235 calories immediately before or during my run. DM's calculator says I burned 2,887... just a rough figure they give you based on the time and distance you put in.

But just going by that, I guess that means I actually burned around 1,650 calories today. I feel hungry but not starving, for what it's worth.

BJ - I just went back and looked at my photos from the Disney marathon and I was just a little bit ahead of you at 18 miles - I hit the 18 mile mark at 3 hours and 29 minutes, but then fell off the planet in the last 8 miles to finish at 5 hours and 18 minutes, so keep up the good work to finish strong.

Thanks Doug. That sounds like a solid time to me, actually. I'm shooting for a 12 minute average, which is right about where I was today. Course, I was closer to 11 than 12 for the first several miles (under 11 for Mile 1), then graaadually saw those splits inch downward. Maybe I should work on pacing.

Cranberry Apple GU with Caffeine has been what I have always used. (used some this morning in the Cayman Half Marathon as a matter of fact) But I keep hearing good stuff about the Honey Stinger.

I may have to pick some up.

Congratulations! I truly remember some of those monster training runs as much as I remember the marathon itself.
Thanks! The last 4 months have definitely been an adventure just by themselves.

Once I finish the race, I plan to post a horrifically bloated entry just recapping some of the highlights of my little journey.

I didn't have a blog, but I pretty much didn't shut up about my training progress the entire time I was in training. LOL. And I also sent a bloated email to everyone I knew when the marathon was over describing in minute detail everything I felt each step of the way! As far as I'm concerned, you deserve to be filled with pride and want to share it with friends and family after going through all that!
