Long range RFID testing has started

It would not surprise me in the least if they really are doing this. This kind of tracking can provide a lot of information that I would think Disney management would find very useful. And if anyone doubts that this can be done check out http://www.openbeacon.org/ . This project has been used to track the exact location of 100's of people at various conferences. This is something that was setup by volunteers in a temporary location, using in expensive off the shelf hardware and open source software.

Indeed that's the whole point of MM+ and why it both cost and is worth the billion dollar price tag. The kind of data WDW is going to gather over the next few years (assuming they use the system to its fullest) is really unprecedented and worth a ton. It really is very forward looking and something most companies are only beginning to explore. Something that people here usually overlook. Dare I say it, I know I'll get flames - but the overall idea and possibilities strike me as being very much in the original WDW/Epcot spirit if used to their full potential. Using new technology in the operations of the resort - not just in show - to create a better whole.

Granted as far as guest experience goes it really comes down to how Disney decides to use that info. The cynics would claim it'll just be used to find the maximum price to charge for Carmel apples - which is probably true, but it also should enable MUCH better efficiency with crowd distribution and more. Full postulations have been posted by me before in I believe the capacity thread.

Don't be worried about Disney tracking you using magic bands and long range RFID chips because homeland security can track you with you low range REID chip and you cell phone even if it's off. I'm not worried about Disney or any other private company. I'm worried about the Federal Government. The tracking of a private company that you use their services is and always has been legal. It's the constitution that is to protect us from the government and that is being taken away one right at a time. Let Disney track me at Disney World. Let Chase know when and where I spend my money for the reward points and cash back they give me.

Yay - shorter lines!

So instead of coming up with an intelligent retort, you utter the most juvenile comment ever posted in WDWMagic forum history. What disappoints me more is that @Tigger1988 gives you a "like" which is basically a stamp of approval. I am about 50/50 on agreement/disagree with post 1988 makes. But what I respected was the fact that he/she always had a very cerebral argument.

If anyone uses a cell phone then this happens to you everyday anyway so I don't get the big deal.

Or a credit card for that matter. People are crazy.

40 some years ago when WDW opened if I was to tell you that there will come a day when Disney will be tracking your every movement, you would have called me crazy then as well. Big deal? You don't have a problem losing your privacy I get that. You wont care until it directly effects your daily living and it will happen in your life time. I also understand how I am tracked in the real world. I don't like that either and addressed it in my OP. My point was it is invading my vacation as well. A vacation that I pay a handsome sum for.

Everyone understands what some of the information will be used for. The "crowd distribution for one is the very point I was making. You see it as making it a better experience. Me? Its about controlling movement of its guest. Manipulating them to do as they deem. Be here at 10:30......be there at 12:30......have lunch at 1:40...its robotic behavior. Its all an attempt to manufacture the experience. Some people don't see the Orwellian aspect of it. I do. It bothers me.

Exactly, Seascape this is one post I actually agree with you on. IMO WDW is a microcosm of what is happening in the world. An experiment of what is to come. There will come a time where you will need a permit to drive from one state to another. You will have to apply to go on vacation to FL. I know I will get flamed for such a statement. " Tin foil hat" wearer, but again if I was to tell you 40 years ago that we would all be tracked and watched by credit card companies and more importantly by the government you all would say I was crazy. If I told you then that when you went to the airport that you would have to take off your shoes, belt and basically get frisked to board a plane you would have said I was crazy. What is really crazy is people who says..."who cares"

Let me guess... you live in the remote mountains of Alaska in a cave, too?

Nothing.

Seriously.

The wifi infrastructure was installed as part of a deal for something else.

Next question?
If they spent nothing then there would be no wifi. I didn't ask which budget it was in but what it cost. Disney put their cost in the next gen budget. I'm just interested. And since you know so much what was the something else they did it for? Same question on their new app. I think it's money well spent because it allows their customers to better plan their day. So even if there is no ROI it's a good move. Same for Disney but....

Well welcome to 40 years from then. I'm sure you use a cell phone and credit card and have no issues.

Okay so we can then discuss cell towers and the fact that no company can put cell phone tower on private property without getting permission and in almost all cases paying compensation. Now there were lots of new cell towers put up in WDW. I would be absolutely shocked if Disney just let companies do that for free. I'm sure they are being paid for that and since it is part of their next gen plan it is beneficial to Disney, the cell phone providers and the customers. BTW I will never use the wifi. I don't trust it for privacy. I use my 4G cell service only. It's not perfect but it is more secure.

It is nothing like that. No cell Tower. No marvel contract. No heart. Good grief.

The installations (plural) were for Comcast. One was paid for. The " free spin off " is the in park wifi system. The real project was for something totally different.

Or are you trying to steer the conversation away from the original topic? If so then my mistake.

Oddly, Xfinity has far more wifi hotspots along other portions of International Drive than they do within Uni proper. I'm surprised. Figures, they even threw a ton of them out here in the desert of New Mexico after I dumped my Comcast service. Grrrrrrr.

Start throwing "monorail footers" into your discussion. That may help with the focus....

I like my comcast service at my Southwest Florida home. Their price is fair even though I wish I didn't have to pay so much for sports programming. I am a news junkie and CNBC is my favorite channel.
