I'm not angry about them changing Snow White to be more modern, but I just don't understand the point? If you are going to fundamentally change who the character is and tell a completely different story, why even call it Snow White? Why not just make a brand new princess? Calling the movie "Snow White" but having it be Snow White in name only will not bring in new fans, but it will anger the people who are actually fans of Snow White.
Exactly this. If they want to tell some story that isn’t Snow White, just do it. I think people would be cool with they doing something original. If it is well done and entertaining, it might even do well financially.

But the main point in doing these “remakes” is to appeal to folks’ sense of nostalgia and love of the originals. To do that and to certainly invoke clear references to the original (eg Snow White wearing the classic Disney outfit) but substantially change characters or plot points ends up creating a dissatisfaction from the fan base. If you are going to do a soulless cash grab, just copy it and make as much money as possible.

We don’t know enough about the film to conclude that she’ll be Snow White in name only. Cruella, too, was changed in significant ways from her animated counterpart, but the invocation of the latter in service of a fundamentally new interpretation still made sense and (to my mind) paid off.

It’s kind of sad that modern Disney writers think true love is an outdated concept… as if you either dream of finding love or you dream about being successful, but not both, I know a ton of people who disprove that horrible logic that you can’t have it all.
But based on what we know, she will have a love interest. He just happens not to be a prince.

“I hate this live action remake! All they do is replicate the original animated film!”

*Disney goes in different direction with IP*

“I hate this live action remake! It’s too different from the original animated film!”

Also, you guys know Disney didn’t invent Snow White, right? They just made a version of a pre-existing story, and now they are making a different version.

She is correct "It's no longer 1937" and her not being saved by the prince is not edgy or fresh or impactful (princesses not saved by a prince has been done), there are many aspects of this film that are not well thought out and thus far appear, wellll, cheap.
I have it on good information that by 1937 some princesses had gone on to start their own restaurants and formed a successful food co-op

And what snowflakes they were back in 1937 for sanitising the ending of the original tale!

I loved the Cruella movie, but it was Cruella in name only.

But one’s enjoyment of it was enhanced by the deliberate way in which it both invoked and diverged from its animated predecessor. At least mine was.

Put differently, do you really think the film would have been better had they called her by a different name and pretended she wasn’t inspired in some way by an earlier version of the character? Because that’s what you argued earlier for Snow White.

I loved the Cruella movie, but it was Cruella in name only.

Had they named it 101 Dalmatians I’d have expected a retelling of the cartoon, but because the name was different I also expected a different story.

This is where Disney is screwing up in my opinion, the name sets the tone, call it the same name and people expect the same movie, change the name and people expect something different.

If they were making a movie called “The Poison Apple” no one would be worried about dwarfs or Princes because we’d all be expecting a different story… but call it Snow White and we expect to see the classic Snow White.

I agree, and also think there’s a difference between a “reimagining” for truly creative purposes and just trying to sidestep material that they probably shouldn’t be releasing in 2023 anyways. The story is based on someone who is praised for being the absolute whitest of all the white people. I get all “Get off my lawn with yer Woke nonsense, you daggone kids today!”, and even I find that weird as a concept for a movie in this day and age. Ditto with the uncertainty about whether or not the depiction of dwarves is disrespectful or not. If you’re not sure, then just don’t remake it. Remaking it with those specific elements carefully danced around really only calls more attention to them in a way.
