For what it’s worth, many of the positive assessments here of the Mermaid remake have centred on the new scenes that develop the relationship between Eric and Ariel.

I’ve said dozens of times the only remakes I like are the original stories like Cruella and Maleficent, the scene for scene remakes are boring.

The idea that people want scene for scene remakes is opposite of my experience.
Yeah, but those were prequels. They weren't remakes of the original cartoons.

If we’re limiting it to retelling the same story then I agree, a retelling should be as close to the original as possible.

I dislike retelling the same story though so I’d argue they should just never do that. In the history of film I can only think of a handful of remakes that rival the original, and there’s hundreds of originals that are infinitely better than the remake.

And I’d add the remakes I like are all old enough that I saw the remake first, before seeing the original, so I think of the remake as the original.

I don’t mind the remakes, so I’m afraid you’ll have to count me out of your consensus!

I know this makes me something of an outlier here, but my feelings are based on my own personal tastes, not corporate politics, budgetary concerns, or grand declinist narratives.
Not an outlier of TWDC! And the best thing, you are aligned with Iger and most that are making movies in TWDC. And they will continue to make films you enjoy. A big win for you I say.

I honestly couldn’t care less about Iger.

And I didn’t say I enjoy the remakes; I said I don’t mind them. Of the ones I’ve seen, I’ve liked some and disliked others. They’re nothing I have a strong opinion about.

I'm not angry about them changing Snow White to be more modern, but I just don't understand the point? If you are going to fundamentally change who the character is and tell a completely different story, why even call it Snow White? Why not just make a brand new princess? Calling the movie "Snow White" but having it be Snow White in name only will not bring in new fans, but it will anger the people who are actually fans of Snow White.

The issue with movies being a Franchise.

It’s kind of sad that modern Disney writers think true love is an outdated concept… as if you either dream of finding love or you dream about being successful, but not both, I know a ton of people who disprove that horrible logic that you can’t have it all.

I‘ve been rewatching Once Upon a Time on D+ and it’s amazing how well they did the Charming Snow White relationship, both strong, both devoted to each other, both save each other countless times… so old fashioned, couldn’t possibly include that in a modern Disney movie.

So why didn't that translate into better box office? Especially overseas, where people are allegedly smarter and better than Americans?

She is correct "It's no longer 1937" and her not being saved by the prince is not edgy or fresh or impactful (princesses not saved by a prince has been done), there are many aspects of this film that are not well thought out and thus far appear, wellll, cheap.

No kidding.

It kills me when Hollywood starlets say this sort of stuff, as if it's still 1974 and what they are saying is edgy and fresh.

The whole Stereotypical Disney Princess who is Not A Stereotypical Disney Princess thing has been done to death for several decades now.

And yet here we are, subjected to highly paid Hollywood actresses pretending like they are stunning and brave trailblazers in the 2020's.
