Let's hear it for AK!

Besides The Festival of the Lion King, the greatest show in a Disney park, we enjoy the "slow paced" feel of wandering through the parks looking at all the animals and talking to all the CMs who, might I add are very knowlegeable about the animals. We always seem to spend about an hour in the Asian aviary each visit. It is a shame to see all the people rush through the park.

From the moment you approach the entrance, the music and greenery capture and captivate you.

The whole layout of the place is a joy to wander through.

My two favourite live shows are there – Lion King and Tarzan.

It has the best Parade – even though I’m not really a parade person.

The animals – especially the tigers and gorillas.

You are not presented with cheeseburgers at every counter restaurant.

Eating outside by the pond at the Flame Tree Barbeque.

The older actor who plays Guano Joe in Flights of Wonder.

There are shops that stock merchandise themed to the park rather than just kitchen accessories, princess costumes and generic t-shirts.

Did I mention the whole place is gorgeous?

Thanks for reminding me of these. Lion King is our favorite show in all of WDW and Flame Tree is the best counter-service restaurant in all of WDW. For these two reasons alone, we will always head back to AK.

And now an AK CM's point of view...

Thanks guys!!!! Keep those wonderful, positive reviews coming...

When I first transferred to WDW, I was given the role of Fantasyland Attractions CM. I thought I had hit the jackpot, Fantasyland is where I would want to spend most of my life. But the day came for me to fill out my paperwork and upon arriving at Casting I was told I didn't have that job, they decided not to fill it and to put me in Front Entrance merchandise for AK.
Greeeeat  I thought.

But that weekend I submerged myself in info about AK, after I got my ID I spent two 8 hour days there, and I fell in love.
The person that started the whole "it's a half day park and nothing else" bit needs to understand that there is a whole group of people out there who adore this park.

People tend to say, at the end of their vacation, "I need a vacation from my vacation". I feel AK is the park to gives you that relaxing vacation feel. It is not your typical theme park, and that's what it is meant to be: "A Whole New Species of Theme Park". This is where animals reign (check the name :)). This is the place to TAKE YOUR TIME. Take in EVERYTHING, the music, the animal sounds, the food (we do have the best food in terms of counter service), the atmosphere.

More to come after other reviews are written...

It's never the same place twice :)

I adore AK, but to really appreciate it, you have to take your time. It's especially good after a few days of running around like a mad person. Sometimes you just have to stop and catch your breath.

I also love AK. The beauty of the landscaping and animals is overwhelming to me.

Whenever I visit AK, I pretty much only go on two rides (Kilimanjaro and Dinosaur....Primeval Whril wasn't open when I was last there), and I am pretty familiar with every square inch of the park.

However, I discover something new or have an interesting experience every time I go. Since the animals are very dynamic, every visit to the park, or trip on a ride is different. Since I know every experience will be unique, and I love animals and nature, I am a huge fan of the park.

I can't give enough praise for AK

Things can only get better...............

AK is our least favourite of the 4 parks. But it IS getting better - The inclusion of a parade and the shows are second to none.
The only thing that needs improving is access around the Tree Of Life - all footpaths meet at The Tree and cause far too much congestion

AK is by far my favorite park in WDW (it replaced Epcot, which I loved as a kid)...I feel that it is the only park that trully transports you away from the "real world" and into a world of exploration, discovery and adventure. The park is huge and I don't even get tired of walking from one point to the other. Since I love taking pictures, this park offers the best chances. The tree of life is up there with the Epcot geosphere, as the best centerpiece. And the saffaris is awesome.

I have to admit, the first time I went to AK I didn't really like it...but one day I sat down and thought about the park...and realized that it wasn't so bad...why you may ask? Well because it is the only park you spend most of time walking around (less time on rides) and looking at exhibits and you're still having fun....

One of the greatest things about this park is the potential it has...and I look foward to the future.

Oh, and AK has the best enterance...I don't know why people dislike this park...

:D

I love the Animal Kingdom. There is so much to see and do: Macaws to talk to, turtles to stare down, and meerkats to play hide and go seek with.

When i first went to animal kingdom i really didn't care for it. But now it really became a favorite of mine. The detail, atmosphere. beauty, and Disney magic all help to make this a great park. When my family first went to Dinosour they didn't kniw what to expect, my mom actually thought it was an exhibit but once the ride got underway my parents had looks of awe on their faces. The ride still is the only ride i get really scared on. As for there not being enough rides i would say that all theme parks begin somewhat small and grow. Once Everest opens Ak will be the place to go.

I agree, the entrance of this park is amazing. You walk through the beautiful calm oasis.. and then the trees part and you see some leaves poking up on the horizon.. you get closer and approach the bridge, and then the entire view of the tree and discovery island appears, amazing.

TIPS FOR VISITING AK

Sometimes I am ticked that I am not in the middle of the park, but being a Front Entrance CM has it's perks. When working lockers, strollers, or the guest relations cart I have an incredible view of the ibis, scarlet ibis, spponbills, and my favorite the black swans.

Sooooo... my tips for visiting AK, so that you can appreciate it.
Most people go to MK as their first park, it gives the feeling that you have finally arrived at WDW. If you had to use a lot of time and energy to get to WDW then maybe you should start at AK. However, AK is typically everyone's closer park.
Whichever you choose make sure you have about 5-7 hours to spend in AK, take your time and relax. If you are staying at a Disney resort definately go during one of the Extra Magic Hour Days. Our animals are always more active in the morning.
Start off by going on safari of course! But try not to bypass everything in the Oasis or in Discovery Island. If it is too busy, get a Fastpass and go to Pagani Forest Trail, encounter incredible Gorillas, see Rufus' cousins (naked mole rats), and check out the real life Timons (meerkats). Spend as much time as you want, let's say your Fastpass not good for another hour and 15 minutes, great, spend it in this trail.

The thing about the safari is surprises. We do not control the animals behavior, we have ways of encouraging desired behavrios, but we never know when a rhino or giraffe will cross the road in front of the jeep. So, do your best to go on safari not once, but twice during your visit. And unless you are a photographer professionally, don't spend the safari taking a ton of pics. THe only time they will come out good at all is if an Animal is real, real close or if the jeep has stopped. If you spend your safari behind a camera lens, you might be missing the whole experience.

When you return to Harambe you may want to go to Rafiki's Planet Watch. This is great for kids because there is a petting zoo. It is also fun for adults who like to learn and experience new things. The thing to remember is this area is a place that is enjoyable based on the decisions you make, you are not directed where to go, what to see, so LOOK AROUND and explore.

When you are done in Harambe, go to Asia. Wanna cool down? Go to Kali River Rapids. TWO WARNINGS: you WILL get wet, and this ride has a pretty short duration, and a long wait in the summer. If you enjoy shows catch Flights of Wonder, this is a neat show if you have time. Finally, enter the mystery of Majarajah Jungle Trek and meet some fascinating animals.

Now it's time to go to Discovery Island. If you are hungry go to Flame Tree BBQ. Most guests love the food and I personally feel the seating area is the most beautiful seating area on property, plus I occassionally work there. Check out it's Tough To Be a Bug, a creepy, crawly 3D show inside the Tree of Life. But if anyone in your group does not like bugs or loud noise then you may want to skip it. Discovery Island and the Oasis have some of the most unique animal areas. If you take the time to look for the signs, and the paw prints on your map then you can find red and grey kangaroos, spotted dear, otters, cotton top tamarins, all kinds of great animals. Plus Discovery Island has some of the most detailed buildings and surroundings.
Head off to Dinoland and go back in time to save Aladar the dinosaur. Have some fun in a campy little set up at Chester's and Hester's Dinoland.
End your day by seeing Tarzan ROCKS! or Festival of The Lion King. Both are really great shows, so if you can see both. If not I prefer Lion King, and most people feel it is the best show on property.
Before you leave take some time to roam around the Oasis. Go left and you will see Muntjacks, a Babirusa, and the world's largest rodent (don't worry he's cute). Go right and meet the macaws and the anteater, ou can cross over in the middle. But take some time, relax and enjoy. The Ibis and other great birds, including the Black Swans are at the front of the Oasis, by the park entrance.

Just make sure to take your time and enjoy the park, this is anything but your typical theme park. HAVE A WILD TIME!

I agree! I love this park! There is so much potential still to come in the future for AK....so much space to add on more new and exciting attractions. I've been dissapointed in the route that MGM has taken since it opened , but so far AK has soared WAY beyond my expectations. :) Can't wait for our next trip at the end of February!:sohappy: :sohappy: :sohappy:

Nope, you're not alone. :D

I actually see it as an insult to the consumer in other parks and guests in Disney's parks.

Yes, there are plenty of sit down restaurants in the Studios and the MK with lots more to offer than burgers/fries/chicken fingers, but that's not an excuse to set these as the menu for nearly every counter service location in these parks. This doesn't even take into the account the amount of money a family has to spend on this "stuff."
