Less-popular restaurants worth checking out?

I think it'd be easy to walk up or get a last minute ADR for several Resort locations. Even though they may not be "destination dining," the food is still very good.

Captain's Grille at Yacht Club
Shutters at Caribbean Beach
Spoodles on BoardWalk

And you can usually get a walk up lunch at Brown Derby. Yes, the dining phone number will say that the place is full, but walk up, speak with Muhommed the manager, and you will be seated.

We ate at Trails End on Aug. 30th, and it is still one of my favorite restaurants on property. The food and price are both good. We had 4 adults and 1 child and everyone walked away rubbing their bellies and moaning.

Another vote for the Turf Club at SSR. We were pleasantly surprised.

Also, the Garden Grove at the Swan has four different menus, depending on the day of the week. We ate on "Fisherman's Warf" night, and it was great. It's a bit pricey, but the food is excellent and they have a great wine list. We went for the characters (which they no longer have at dinner - it was Timone and Rafiki) but might go back just for the food - perhaps try a different menu.

Another vote for the Biergarten. And I'm going to add Olivia's at Old Key West. We went there for lunch and it was fantastic and not crowded at all.

Here are the restaurants I've been able to get a ressie at last minute:

Tony's Town Square - I've seen mixed reviews, but I loved the food and the atmosphere.

Crystal Palace - Since they serve breakfast, lunch and dinner, this can be one of the easier character dining to get into. I was there during the lunch/dinner changeover and loved most of what I tried.

Boma - I know it's extremely popular, but I was able to get a 6:30 pm same day ressie. Also, if they're taking walk-ups, there's lots to do at AKL to pass the time while you wait.

I guess Biergarten will not be one of those easy ressies after everyone reads these reviews.... :ROFLOL: Personally, I could take it or leave it.. Didn't mind sitting with others.

How are the tables arranged at Biergarten? I always thought they were really long tables with benches, but based on an earlier post, it sounded like they are tables of eight. We are a party of seven, wondering how that would go.

There are a number of long tables there that will seat 8. Biergarten is billed as family styled dining where you can be sat at the same large table with other guests. The good thing is that this makes this restaurant ideal for large parties.

Thanks for the info. Is 8 the smallest table? Just asking, becuase we've never eaten there before but are considering it. I have no problem meeting new people over dinner, but have anti-social family members. (to be honest, the in-laws are the anti-social ones, but they're the ones I'm traveling with)

I am sure they do but from what I remember most of the tables were of the 8 seat variety. If you are a party of 7 you will more than likely be sat at the same table.

Here's some of my favorites and I NEVER have trouble getting in to eat...even without a reservation:

1. Kona Cafe for dinner
2. Trail's End for lunch or dinner
3. Liberty Tree Tavern for lunch
4. The Plaza Restaurant for lunch or dinner

Another vote for Biergarten. I have always had a lovely time there. August 9th met a couple from GA who are lurkers here (which if you are reading this hello! my family had a wonderful time talking with you!) and had an amazing time. Also, once sat with a Spanish speaking family and had a great time learning new words and helping them with their english. So obviously, I think sitting with strangers is great!

Another vote for Olivia's at Old Key West as well. Hardly anyone there it seemed and the food was delicious.

Again, another vote for Trail's End but this time for breakfast. Get there super early and the woods are simply beautiful in the morning! One of the best values on property and one of the nicest servers I've ever met (who's name escapes me at the moment but he's an older gentleman).

And a big recommendation (although not really a restaurant/meal) for the Afternoon Tea at the Garden View Lounge in the Grand Floridian. So relaxing and delicious and filling!

I suspect someone travelling with him/her got sick later that evening. Maybe it was the food, maybe it just happened to be the last meal before the illness hit.

I know I was ready to blame a restaurant once, until I discovered that friends we had visited for a couple of days (and left earlier in the day) had the same symptoms that evening/night, due to contaminated well water and/or a toddler spreading germs all over. :hurl:

We discovered that we're (including our son, whose taste palate has suddenly expanded in the last couple of years) fond of Mediterranean/Northern African/Middle Eastern food, so we are looking forward to eating there.

Thanks, I ate at Resturant Merrkesh(sp?) at Epcpt in Morocco for the 1st time in May. I got a Chicken Gyro and fries and it was really good (a lot of food). It was also very crowded. I tended to avoid Morocco as I am not a fan of their food but gave it a try and was pleasantly surprised. I do not think I would touch anything else though, it doesnt look to appetizing.

My vote has to go to the Marrakesh in Morocco, Maya Grille at CSR, the Turf Club at SSR and I'm not sure about the DDP but I really enjoy Big River Grille and Brewing Works at the BWR.
