LBV pronunciation

I think the inhabitants should have the last word, even if their pronunciation is incorrect.

So, vis (rhymes with hiss) it shall remain.

There are a few local areas that have Spanish names, and the inhabitants have their own pronunciation.

One area of town is Ortega, which the locals pronounce Or-tee-ga. Another area is a mispelled Spanish name, Ponte Vedra. My Texan SIL insists upon calling it Pon-ta Ver- day, which is probably the original name

It's really weird that I saw this thread now... I'd never heard my dad say "Buena Vista" before today.

He says "Bonavista". Beat that.

(FYI, it's always been "bwen-a vista" for me.)

That's my opinion too. There are towns in different parts of the country with names spelled exactly alike but pronounced differently, just because of local preferences.

Apparently, my Nana used to pronounce it "bunna".

I think it's bweyna, though. Isn't it supposed to be Spanish? Though I do tend to say boina instead. And I say vISTa, not veesta. I also pronounce Microsoft's new OS that way, and I'm not sure which they intend. Disney probably intends veesta.
