Pre-Trip Lawdy, Lawdy, Look Who's Turning 40 - PTR

I was really tempted to call this the “What the heck are we doing?!?!!?-PTR,” but the reality…this trip is my 40th birthday present to me. Still, it’s one crazy convoluted mess, so at some point you’ll probably catch on to the reason behind the secondary title.

WHO...

Ok...enough about that...there will plenty of time to address the planning insanity.
If you're new to my reports, I'm Sandy...

9037036919_cff2edd2e5_n.jpg

I've been going to WDW since 1985 - even lived in Florida for a while. Soooooo, let's just say I've been to WDW a number of times. :D Beyond that, my 40th is about a month before this trip and this is my gift to me. I'd considered going on my actual 40th; however, I promised myself that our next trip would involve MNSSHP...so, September it is. And if you're familiar with the Cake Talk...I promise you....THERE WILL BE CAKE! In fact, there will be 2 CAKES! But more on that later.

Also, I'm usually the one behind the camera, so you won't be seeing much of me when it comes to the actual TR. Hey, I at least take TONS of pictures (like thousands!). And if you do see me, I doubt you will ever see my hair down since it's usually up on top of my head in the heat and humidity.
Like this...
9036986067_862e1be670_m.jpg

...although, I may add a flower to make it ... well ... cute.

Hey, we live in Texas so heat is our norm, but we also approach it wisely and hair up like this is a great way to keep cool when not wearing a hat to keep my head from baking in the sun.

OK, enough about me (for now)...let's talk about the girls.

284299_10201120529723496_1246768217_n.jpg

The brunette is Kendall...she'll be turning 7 about a month before the trip...and the blonde is Sammie...who will be turning 5 a little over a month after the trip. This will be the girls' 4th trip to WDW.

The girls are total characters. Seriously. Kendall is a drama queen, but insists she's no diva (yeah right!). I could be really mean and post a video of a more recent meltdown, but I'll spare her. Sammie is our tomboy and quiet little trouble maker. Just recently, she tried to see how much toilet paper she could flush down each toilet in the house. Too bad I noticed we were suddenly down 6 rolls AFTER her experiment.

Next up...DH...

He likes, but does not love WDW. He's made it very clear that he's bored with trips to Disney. I told him I'd planned this trip for just me and the girls, but he was invited to come if he'd like. Well, when the first of two SWA fare sales hit, I cornered him on the matter and he agreed to go. Ultimately, I think he has fun and enjoys seeing the girls having such a good time and experiencing new things as they grow. So, I spent several months of having this trip booked not knowing if he'd be joining us... and if things go well job wise...he may still have to bow out. Soooo...really, who knows.

Beyond us...

We are actually being joined by 5...YES 5 ... more family members on day 3 of our trip. My parents will be joining us along with my brother's family. They all live in south Florida, so it's a fairly easy trip up for them. Well, assuming my brother & fam are still able to make it come trip time. They have a bunch of stuff going on and while they've booked lodging and all have orders in for discounted tickets through their employers (perks of living in FL), there's still a chance they'll back out. So, if DH has to stay home and if they back out...we could go from a party of 9 to a party of 5. Insanity I tell you!

When and Where...
Well, the when is fairly drama free...

Sept. 19 - 23

I just rebooked our air, so our arrival and departure changed, but I think it's for the best...since it saved us an additional $512. So instead of arriving at 11:45a, we're arriving around 2:50pm. I don't see that being a huge deal. On the flipside, we'll be getting a lot more time on our last day. I think our original flight had us leaving MCO around 2pm, but now we're leaving just after 7pm. So, more time with my family and more time to play on our last day.

So, that's the when, but the where is complicated...and still bugs me. :(

We were originally booked at the Contemporary...my fave. I was hoping fall discounts would mirror summer discounts so I could splurge on night 1 and stay in an MK facing room in the tower...then switch to the garden wing...but NO...the Sept discounts did not mirror the summer ones. On top of that, Mousesavers (via Small World Vacations) posted some incorrect info on the discounts for the Contemporary. They posted that MK view was 5% (which is correct) and standard rooms were 20% (which was incorrect). I put off calling by a day b/c I didn't know what to do. Overnight, I decided to switch to WL with a 30% off discount since it's a greater savings and it's DH's fave. The % never came up when I was on the phone with Disney that day, but I had to call about something else the next day and found out that the Contemporary discount was 30% for all non-MK facing rooms. Unfortunately, everything in the garden wing was gone and a full trip in the tower was more than I wanted to spend...sooooooo, WL it was. I did complain to Mousesavers and they corrected the problem, but I wonder if I would have gotten the room I wanted at the 30% discount if they'd posted the correct info.

So, now we're staing in WL. Most of our trip was geared for staying at the Contemporary, but WL isn't a huge transition. We'll be staying in a bunk bed room with a woods view. I figure at least it'll make it fun for the kids. I've also asked for 5th floor on the MK side.

Far from a good picture, but we had a nice view from our standard view room the last time we stayed at WL.
5264648958_2f2ed4cf37_m.jpg

I know most people love WL and I shouldn't whine, but I really didn't care for the bedding on our last visit. The room also felt very cramped. Don't get me wrong, the resort is stunning...I just had some issues. Imagine that. I am also wondering how it will feel to have a non-holiday stay at WL. Last time we stayed there...we had a room over the lobby and this beauty greeted us every time we left our room.

5265579207_4f85628682.jpg

Still, we had a great time popping over for drinks at Trout Pass during our summer trip in 2011.... and clearly, there was no tree up at that point.

We are also going to try going stroller free this trip and should have less to bring clothing wise since it's a warm weather trip....so, hopefully that will help the room not feeling as cramped.

Honestly, the real lodging drama is the rest of the family. My parents and brother also lost out on the Contemporary discount, feel that 20% is too little for the Poly, and refuse to stay again at WL... so they're now staying at the Dolphin. Seriously---what's going on here!!!!????!!!! This is really putting a monkey wrench in all of our early morning plans. We'll manage, but not without certain people whining about it. I guess at least they got a really awesome AAA rate...like under $150/nt.

COMING UP...

Calling it a night, but coming up:
Dining
Cakes
Surprises - and to think I said I'd take a break from these
Special Goodies for the Girls
MNSSHP
The Tickets
The School Issues
...and a host of other things.

Thanks for reading :)

DH doesn't seem too keen on the Spanish. :grumpy: We'll just have to work on him ;) I also showed him the one hat with Buzz's face that I could find that would fit him (and was reduced to a decent price). Oddly enough, it was the same hat that Kendall tried on back on the girls' first visit in 2010.

5264609800_3a791baf7e.jpg

DH actually didn't mind the idea of this hat, but agreed that he'd wear it very little and it would be one more thing to lug around. So, we're going to skip it.

I also found a tank top to work with my conceptual Jessie shirt. I saw it for $4.97 online, but went into the store and paid $2.99 (+ tax).

The pins I ordered for the girls arrived yesterday too. There are some cute ones in there, but of course- no Pluto. I'm tempted to buy one before the trip, but I know I should just wait.

And the fun news...the girls now know we're going to FL in 2 weeks. I sat the girls down in front of me after Skyping with my parents and broke that part of the news. Needless to say, they are VERY excited. Kendall also pointed out that Disney World is also in FL. :cautious: :jawdrop: Oh who am I kidding, I did entertain the idea that they'd ask...and I just said "yes, yes it is." She pushed and said maybe we can drive up and I made it sound very doubtful.

Hard to believe, but barring any unforeseen issues like air delays, we should be at AKL at this point in exactly 2 weeks! :joyfull::joyfull::joyfull:

A few minor updates...

1. I caved on the whole Pluto pin thing, but I also didn't go nuts with it either. Essentially, I found the cheapest Pluto pin on ebay up for auction that was ending soon and snagged it. I wound up being just a little over $2 after factoring in shipping. It also evens things out- i.e. each girl gets 13 new pins.
mHc2vekEG2YgS4aMzSZ-gTQ.jpg

The lanyards also arrived, so I sorted out the pins...added them to the lanyards and devised a little plan. I'm going to pack all of the lanyards and pins, let them do some preliminary trading between themselves with the new pins, and then have them figure out the keepers vs. the traders. The traders will make it on the new black & green lanyards and the keepers go on the princess lanyards.

2. My shirt arrived. It's very sheer and the floral detail on the bottom is more prominent than expected. It's on the snug side and while it does button, it looks better open with the yellow tank more visible.

3. DH and I have ponchos, but the girls' raincoats are a bit heavy for warm weather trips + Kendall now really hates hers. So, I picked up a 2 pack of kid ponchos on ebay for $5.95.

4. We got several boring details squared away...new EpiPens for Kendall, dog got the 2nd installment of her canine influenza vaccine, I moved my Disney rewards $s to my card (may have a few more right before the trip), and I put in my mail hold order with USPS. I know...fun.:bored:

5. I also called to check to see if there was any way to do FP+ booking now with our tickets and the answer was no. Of course, this makes me more nervous about these tickets, but I'm just going to have to have some faith and hope all works out OK when I go to guest services. Now hopefully our flights will be on time so I have plenty of time to take care of this on nt 1.

6. Speaking of which, I'm still undecided on the Cali Grill thing. I've started monitoring the FAA site, SW flight tracking and the weather in all areas to see how consistent arrivals and departures seem to be with respect to the weather. DH seems most interested in the desserts, but the pate flatbread, duck salad, and of course- the sushi - really have me drooling. :hungry:

7. I know I've done a lot of shopping for the girls...but today...I finally went shopping for ME! :D I bought 3 outfits. I got a floral sundress as well as some new athletic shorts to go underneath since that makes it more comfy (to me) to wear a dress all day...I got a pair of black lightweight bootleg pants with a turquoise tropical floral tank...and I got a white tee to go with a diagonal striped skirt in navy and gray. Sooooo...yay for clothes.

8. I got this idea about doing glow leis. I was planning on buying glow sticks no matter what, but I really don't want to spend $ on leis. We just did a Hawaiian event at work, so I'm going to see if anyone is willing to donate their leis. Otherwise, we'll have 5 or 6 and just try and make due...i.e. just in case 'Ohana isn't giving them out on the night we're there for dinner. I at least got the glow sticks. We've found that 100 is just way too much, so I picked up a tube of 50 for $2.99 (40% off coupon) - so we should be good.

OK- really nothing overly significant, but it makes me feel like I'm being productive. ;)

Silly little updates...mainly to try and squash some of this nervous energy.

I don't know how many of you saw my thread about leis from 'Ohana, but I managed to convince a bunch of my coworkers to surrender their leis from our Hawaiian day a few weeks ago...
9711304068_64ab041afd.jpg

I 'may' spray paint them with a glow in the dark treatment...or I may leave them as is and just intertwine the glow sticks as planned.

In other news...I'm now a redhead. :jawdrop: I've been very deep shades of auburn before...but this is the reddest I've ever been. I'm really quite awful with selfies and I looked dead tired from being up for the Texans/Chargers game, so I just opted to take a pic of my red ponytail.

9719125558_1e769f65a1.jpg

I guess at least my hair will now work really well for my Jessie costume.

In other news, DH's shirt arrived and he's afraid it's going to be huge. I keep telling him it will shrink and what's the big deal with an oversized tee for one night.

I'm also horribly envious of my parents. They are getting a FL resident special on tickets. It's 4 days for the price of 3 = $179pp. They can add on hoppers for an additional $29.50 pp. So, now I have the challenge of trying to coordinate around their park time on Monday and Friday. I think it's overwhelming my parents a bit, but I've suggested we at least try and meet up in MK before it closes to party guests so the kids can see them and they can see us in all of our costumed glory :p

Speaking of which- Kendall's croc slingbacks are really big on her...so I bought her a pair of clog style crocs like Sammie's in yellow and blue. They were really reduced, so it's a back up plan for the evening.

Now just trying not to panic about the tick the bit me yesterday and the system forming off of the Yucatan. I flicked the tick off of me the instant it bit me...so the odds are very slim that it will be an issue...still. The system on the other hand has a 70% chance of development and while it will likely hit Mexico, they are thinking the rains will loop back around to hit us on some level. We have a 60% chance of rain from it both next Wednesday and Thursday. We need the rain, but rain often = delays and there's always the fear of it being a Tropical Storm Allison style storm. Trying to be optimistic.

It sounds like it is all coming together. I too am trying to surprise my son. I had a nightmare Friday that all the special items (couple shirts, Oswald pin and hat and some other fun stuff) I have purchased from eBay and Disney clearance got left at home! It was horrible!
I find the commonality between us comical as I read and keep up with your pretrip report. I am also from the Midwest, Oklahoma. I do cakes on the side, preferably Disney and Pixar, and like to plan a detailed Disney vacation. Because of your great thinking, I found some great customized shirts from Esty. We always do one or two sets of coordinating or matching shirts. DH tolerates this. I usually do a set of Eskimo Joe's shirts, which he likes. This year we are doing EJ Halloween shirts and customized golf shirts from Etsy. We are planning our big revile the morning we are leaving. My son is aware we are going to stay in a hotel on fall break (the first night we are staying closer to Tulsa due to early flight) then that morning on the way to the airport we are going to spring it on him that we are going to Disney not to the Tulsa Zoo, which is right by the airport.

Yeah- we're getting down to the wire here. The nightmares usually hit me at some point in the last week before travel. Right on track- I had a cake nightmare about a week out. Last night I had one involving pins. I don't even remember what happened, but something wasn't right.

Yay- another cake person!!! :D Assuming all goes as planned, I don't see doing anything cake-wise until next month. Love doing Halloween cakes! Glad you were able to find some good things on Etsy. Love your surprise idea...can't wait to hear about the reveal. Are you going to try and film it?

Well, things are really winding down here. By Wednesday, I'll be involved in things that will make the actual trip report. The girls "surprised" my mom on Thursday and she was GREAT! Last year, some of my friends here said I just used the wrong cheerleaders for the 2012 surprise...and I think they were right. I also don't think either girl should be too disappointed with the surprise change of plans. Sammie's major excitement point was pool time... which I can easily deliver. Kendall's is seeing their dog Callie, but we're just going to have to substitute this...

...for this...

I am having that last minute panic feeling. It doesn't help that my pre-trip nightmares are starting up. I made my BIG to do list + I just booked early bird for our flights - it's a small fee until you multiply it by 4 and again by 2. So, that's another $100 out of pocket. I hate spending it, but I also hate the cattle call on SWA and really don't like risking the possibility of seating issues when flying with the girls. So, of course this has me thinking about other monetary things. It's nothing new though...I always have a $ freak out before our trips.

I also picked up some new nail polish for the trip...
th

I'm kind of hoping I can move some of the dots around before drying so I have a few hidden Mickeys on my toes.
:D

DH and I also had a talk about the Cali Grill ADR situation. Right now the plan is to stick with the 7:20p. I'm still nervous about it...to the point that I may just skip it altogether. :jawdrop: It's just becoming a rather stressful thing. I was trying to use my 2010 trip report (http://forums.wdwmagic.com/threads/our-character-crazy-trip-report.671765/) as an example, but I don't have all of the times worked in there like I thought I did. In the end, with a 10:40am ahead of schedule arrival at MCO, I think we were still running way behind b/c of DME, check in and decreased boat service. I don't think we got to WL until close to 12:30p and with massive check in delays due to understaffing at the time, I don't think we got to MK until 2pm. So, it was close to 3.5 hrs from landing to park entry. Of course, this is the only time we've ever had to wait a massive amount of time to check in. I was going to skip online check in, but 2 out of 3x it's speeded up the process for us...so, I'm going to do it again...well, if it lets me- I keep getting error msgs. I'm also requesting certain views in there...so maybe we'll get bumped to a slightly better view. Either way, you're probably going to have to wait until the actual TR to see what we decide with Cali Grill.

*on a side note, odd how most of the pics are still present in my 2010 report, but not the 2011.

There is this part of me that wants to just grab a quick and easy bite and make our way to the Poly for EWP and Wishes from the beach. I still plan to head to the MK area that night- @Jessica Meier and I may try and meet up if we get in and over to that area on time. I'm also hoping to sort out everything with our tickets that night (fingers crossed that goes well).

So, unless anything happens between now and Wednesday...this is probably my last update on PTR details. Always kind of bittersweet when it gets to this point. Obviously, very excited to be so close to being there, but the planning is definitely a big part of the fun. Thanks for following along on my insane planning journey. Hopefully, we'll have one heck of a trip report for you when we get back. Sorry- don't do the live stuff b/c I like to bombard you with pics ;) And kudos to anyone who can guess what my TR title will be :p

Yes we are planning on filming it. We took him Friday night to OKC for the night as a reward on a great parent teacher report. He was soooo excited and it was just one night. I am not sure if he will cry, scream, pass out or all of them, lol. I love the hidden mickey nail polish idea. I usually have Disney nail decals but I am afraid DS will start to wonder or possibly figure it out. May take your hidden mickey idea for that too! Have a great time and happy birthday. Cannot wait to read the trip report. Pixie dust to you!

...I always have a $ freak out before our trips.

I freak out every time I see the prices or make a new reservation. I understand the nightmares. Occasionally, you just have to throw money at the problem to make things easier.

I'm kind of hoping I can move some of the dots around before drying so I have a few hidden Mickeys on my toes.

Oh, yes! Use a toothpick to move the pieces then, take a picture for us.

I'm still nervous about it...to the point that I may just skip it altogether.

That might be a good idea. If it is stressing you out, it might be more trouble than it is worth. As a mom, you carry the worry for your family.

I will miss your updates while you are away. Take fabulous photos and have a magical vacation!

Hey all, I just wanted to let you know that I'll be starting the official trip report later this week. If you hadn't seen my post in trip planning, we were in a really bad car accident on our way to the airport last Thursday:(. We still made it to WDW, but obviously, a lot of stress clouded things a bit for me. And now I'm home desperately trying to pull all of the pieces together. Still, I think a full blown, long, drawn out trip report will help ... that and planning the next trip. ;)

Your TR will be very therapeutic indeed! Look forward to reading all about it, and I am glad to hear that your family is O.K. considering your pre-trip circumstances!
