Pre-Trip Lawdy, Lawdy, Look Who's Turning 40 - PTR

I was really tempted to call this the “What the heck are we doing?!?!!?-PTR,” but the reality…this trip is my 40th birthday present to me. Still, it’s one crazy convoluted mess, so at some point you’ll probably catch on to the reason behind the secondary title.

WHO...

Ok...enough about that...there will plenty of time to address the planning insanity.
If you're new to my reports, I'm Sandy...

9037036919_cff2edd2e5_n.jpg

I've been going to WDW since 1985 - even lived in Florida for a while. Soooooo, let's just say I've been to WDW a number of times. :D Beyond that, my 40th is about a month before this trip and this is my gift to me. I'd considered going on my actual 40th; however, I promised myself that our next trip would involve MNSSHP...so, September it is. And if you're familiar with the Cake Talk...I promise you....THERE WILL BE CAKE! In fact, there will be 2 CAKES! But more on that later.

Also, I'm usually the one behind the camera, so you won't be seeing much of me when it comes to the actual TR. Hey, I at least take TONS of pictures (like thousands!). And if you do see me, I doubt you will ever see my hair down since it's usually up on top of my head in the heat and humidity.
Like this...
9036986067_862e1be670_m.jpg

...although, I may add a flower to make it ... well ... cute.

Hey, we live in Texas so heat is our norm, but we also approach it wisely and hair up like this is a great way to keep cool when not wearing a hat to keep my head from baking in the sun.

OK, enough about me (for now)...let's talk about the girls.

284299_10201120529723496_1246768217_n.jpg

The brunette is Kendall...she'll be turning 7 about a month before the trip...and the blonde is Sammie...who will be turning 5 a little over a month after the trip. This will be the girls' 4th trip to WDW.

The girls are total characters. Seriously. Kendall is a drama queen, but insists she's no diva (yeah right!). I could be really mean and post a video of a more recent meltdown, but I'll spare her. Sammie is our tomboy and quiet little trouble maker. Just recently, she tried to see how much toilet paper she could flush down each toilet in the house. Too bad I noticed we were suddenly down 6 rolls AFTER her experiment.

Next up...DH...

He likes, but does not love WDW. He's made it very clear that he's bored with trips to Disney. I told him I'd planned this trip for just me and the girls, but he was invited to come if he'd like. Well, when the first of two SWA fare sales hit, I cornered him on the matter and he agreed to go. Ultimately, I think he has fun and enjoys seeing the girls having such a good time and experiencing new things as they grow. So, I spent several months of having this trip booked not knowing if he'd be joining us... and if things go well job wise...he may still have to bow out. Soooo...really, who knows.

Beyond us...

We are actually being joined by 5...YES 5 ... more family members on day 3 of our trip. My parents will be joining us along with my brother's family. They all live in south Florida, so it's a fairly easy trip up for them. Well, assuming my brother & fam are still able to make it come trip time. They have a bunch of stuff going on and while they've booked lodging and all have orders in for discounted tickets through their employers (perks of living in FL), there's still a chance they'll back out. So, if DH has to stay home and if they back out...we could go from a party of 9 to a party of 5. Insanity I tell you!

When and Where...
Well, the when is fairly drama free...

Sept. 19 - 23

I just rebooked our air, so our arrival and departure changed, but I think it's for the best...since it saved us an additional $512. So instead of arriving at 11:45a, we're arriving around 2:50pm. I don't see that being a huge deal. On the flipside, we'll be getting a lot more time on our last day. I think our original flight had us leaving MCO around 2pm, but now we're leaving just after 7pm. So, more time with my family and more time to play on our last day.

So, that's the when, but the where is complicated...and still bugs me. :(

We were originally booked at the Contemporary...my fave. I was hoping fall discounts would mirror summer discounts so I could splurge on night 1 and stay in an MK facing room in the tower...then switch to the garden wing...but NO...the Sept discounts did not mirror the summer ones. On top of that, Mousesavers (via Small World Vacations) posted some incorrect info on the discounts for the Contemporary. They posted that MK view was 5% (which is correct) and standard rooms were 20% (which was incorrect). I put off calling by a day b/c I didn't know what to do. Overnight, I decided to switch to WL with a 30% off discount since it's a greater savings and it's DH's fave. The % never came up when I was on the phone with Disney that day, but I had to call about something else the next day and found out that the Contemporary discount was 30% for all non-MK facing rooms. Unfortunately, everything in the garden wing was gone and a full trip in the tower was more than I wanted to spend...sooooooo, WL it was. I did complain to Mousesavers and they corrected the problem, but I wonder if I would have gotten the room I wanted at the 30% discount if they'd posted the correct info.

So, now we're staing in WL. Most of our trip was geared for staying at the Contemporary, but WL isn't a huge transition. We'll be staying in a bunk bed room with a woods view. I figure at least it'll make it fun for the kids. I've also asked for 5th floor on the MK side.

Far from a good picture, but we had a nice view from our standard view room the last time we stayed at WL.
5264648958_2f2ed4cf37_m.jpg

I know most people love WL and I shouldn't whine, but I really didn't care for the bedding on our last visit. The room also felt very cramped. Don't get me wrong, the resort is stunning...I just had some issues. Imagine that. I am also wondering how it will feel to have a non-holiday stay at WL. Last time we stayed there...we had a room over the lobby and this beauty greeted us every time we left our room.

5265579207_4f85628682.jpg

Still, we had a great time popping over for drinks at Trout Pass during our summer trip in 2011.... and clearly, there was no tree up at that point.

We are also going to try going stroller free this trip and should have less to bring clothing wise since it's a warm weather trip....so, hopefully that will help the room not feeling as cramped.

Honestly, the real lodging drama is the rest of the family. My parents and brother also lost out on the Contemporary discount, feel that 20% is too little for the Poly, and refuse to stay again at WL... so they're now staying at the Dolphin. Seriously---what's going on here!!!!????!!!! This is really putting a monkey wrench in all of our early morning plans. We'll manage, but not without certain people whining about it. I guess at least they got a really awesome AAA rate...like under $150/nt.

COMING UP...

Calling it a night, but coming up:
Dining
Cakes
Surprises - and to think I said I'd take a break from these
Special Goodies for the Girls
MNSSHP
The Tickets
The School Issues
...and a host of other things.

Thanks for reading :)

That was the edible image I was gonna do if I had used Publix and the personal shopper. I found my image on etsy for like $5.

I didn't even think to look on etsy. I think the one you were looking at must have sold. Everything that's on there right now is in the same price point as the ebay sellers after factoring in shipping.

Well, it's starting to feel very real...got our DME envelope today. Something about bright yellow luggage tags just really puts it all into perspective.:geek:

Not really much Disney trip news beyond that, but we did hit RFC Galveston today...and I thought I'd share some pics and video since it's got so many similarities to the DTD location. I swear, maybe it's the water ride inside this one, but it smells like a Vegas casino meets PotC in there...and I was suddenly very giddy. :p

Yay for DME packets! That's usually when I get really start to get excited.

We ate at the Rainforest Cafe at the Mall of America on our visit to the Twin Cities last month. My daughter wasn't quite 2 the last time we were at one, so she didn't remember it. She was in awe, giggled through the "thunderstorm". I always enjoy it.

Oh, and beautiful job on the LM cake! My daughter asked if she could have one like that for her birthday. Sadly, I lack the creative gene and we don't live anywhere near TX!

Looks like it was a fun time! And woo hoo on receiving the packet!!!"

Of course, part of me wishes I could start packing, but I can't do that until I "officially" inform the girls that we're heading to FL for grandma's. Although, I have started hinted that we may be surprising grandma if I can get good air. Still, I am probably going to wait until shortly before her bday Skype session with the girls.

We're doing room only, so there's no real "Mickey Mail"- so this DME stuff is really it. Although, I think I'm going to have to go in search of the luggage tags I didn't use on our previous trip to add to the fun.

That's good that she enjoyed it. The last time we did RFC with the girls...they were terrified! Then again, they're kind of scaredy-cats. Although, I think T-Rex gave them a new level of fear...so RFC now feels pretty mild to them.

Thanks!!! :) I wish I lived closer to everybody...b/c I'd have so much fun doing Disney cakes for everyone. I have so many fun ideas, but we only have so many birthdays and special events to justify them. Last I heard, Sammie wants Jake's pirate ship for her bday. We shall see.

Oh, how I hate the waiting game...:in pain:

Back in 2011, the Contemporary got back to me on my cake request in just a little over a day. Last year, I had to email them twice and then call to find out about the hold up (turns out Chef Brian was on vacay). While I don't know if Chef Donald is checking emails, I think Chef Brian is out either Monday and Tuesday or Tuesday and Wednesday...soooooo, I'm going to give it until Thursday before I send another email. I'll call at some point next week if I still haven't heard anything. I am really trying to be patient, but I need time to sketch new cakes and learn to be happy with them if they say no or give me a couple of crazy quotes.

I'm even getting post trip depression. The girls take gymnastics, but took a break for the summer. I'm now trying to work out their return to the gym- post trip. It always makes me sad when I start coordinating things for after the trip.:(

The only trip news (well, that with a pic) I have today is that I bought shoes to go with Kendall's costume. As much as I love gold, red or yellow...blues are much better for school. I found her these, which incorporates the jewel tone blue and the turquoise in the costume + they are girly yet comfy - so it seems like a good fit. They're also great shoes for gymnastics days and might even be up to snuff for school dress code...

I also think I'm going to join the mess and try for Cali Grill on Monday. I talked to a very sleepy Sammie who had no idea what I was asking, but apparently fireworks at dinner beats animals at dinner...who knew? Ultimately, with all of the nods to Mary Blair noted in the décor details, I feel like I need to see it. So, I'm going to try and snag a Wishes timed ADR for our first night. I'll then need to decide if I want it to be a full dinner or if I want to have dinner at Sanaa and hit Cali Grill for dessert. But first...I actually have to get an ADR. And of course all of this is going down on the first day of school...so, I'm adding chaos to an already crazy day. I know tons of people want ADRs, but I'm hoping it's not the madness I endured getting a BOG ressie round this time last year. I really don't like crying over dining. :bawling: But I think I secretly enjoy the insanity with some of this.:geek:

Good luck trying for reservations! I just booked Crystal Palace this morning!!! Yay!!!! :)
The Little Mermaid cake was gorgeous!!!! I also wish I lived in Texas so you could do my kids birthday cakes. We had Peter Pan last year, Toy Story two years ago, and Mickey and Minnie the year before that!
And I have to ask are you from Syracuse or did you go to school there? I live about an hour south of Buffalo. Syracuse was my dream school for nursing but sadly it wasn't in my family's budget and a 90 average doesn't get you full scholarships. . :( I've been to the campus a lot recently though. My husband coaches high school football and the state championships are held in the Dome every year. We've been there three times and won twice. And the kids and I always watch Syracuse football and basketball on TV. Go Orange!!!! :)

I'm so glad you were able to get your CP ADR!!! It is just so frustrating when the system doesn't work properly for one reason or another.

Thank you!!! It was a cake I've had in my head for over a year, so it was nice to get a chance to actually make it. I would LOVE to make a Peter Pan cake, but I think the closest I'll get is Jake...assuming Sammie still wants that for her bday.

I am a Syracuse alum...so, at least I will always know I can make it through blizzards, lake effect snow, white outs, and body freeze warnings. :D Plus, I got pretty good at walking on 2 inch+ thick uneven layers of ice in a pair of heels. :geek: What's funny, I went up there this past May for the first time in YEARS and we get the most gorgeous weather...

015.JPG

This right here is how I know it's been a LONG LONG time since I've been a student or recent alum. It's never this nice when you go to school there or are returning a year later to visit your friends still in school. Sheesh...it snowed on my graduation day...several inches.

The cost to go to SU is obscene. I started out as a voice performance music major and wound up getting a partial scholarship -- they were trying to lure me away from Penn State. Still, it wasn't cheap and all that $ disappeared once I changed majors. While I loved my experience at Syracuse, I still question if it was worth spending all of that $. That's cool that the football championships are in the Dome. I have a friend from high school (grew up in NJ) who lives up there and I guess whatever league her sons are in does something similar b/c every now and then I see a pic with a lovely orange S at the 50 yard line and I'm like...WOOHOOO - DOME SWEET DOME!!!!

Let's Go Orange!!!!!!

A little update...

The other day I forgot to note that I got Sammie some Crocs as well...not like it's the most pressing trip detail or anything, but I like balancing things out for the girls. I got her a pair of chameleons on sale for $19.99, so I was pretty happy. They should also go well with one of the outfits I picked out for her.

Another Sammie update...her Spiderman mask never arrived...i.e. the LED one for MNSSHP. The seller refunded my $ and I ordered one through a seller in the US. It's supposed to be here by Wednesday.

And now the most important thing...

A CAKE UPDATE

Yes, I finally heard back on my cake requests. :)

I got an email from Chef Donald today and it sounds like most of my requests can be met, which is good, but I'm a bit sad about a few things.

1. MOM's CAKE

The Contemporary doesn't have access to the single carousel horse. I guess only the GF has this one. That's fine b/c I would have had to cut it from the cake regardless to keep it in my budget. They also worry that the measuring tape size for a cake of this size might make it impossible to put the writing on the actual tape. So, if it doesn't work out, they're going to write the whole "Grandma Holly - Practically Perfect in Every Way" on the cake board. Cost = $55. I was expecting between $50-65 and told them I'd like to keep it closer to $50...so we're good. I know...a lot of $ for a tiny cake, but it's the gesture.

2. MY CAKE

The big thing- they can't dress Donald in the grass skirt and lei. :( I'm sad about it, but I had a feeling they'd say no. The only times I've ever seen the characters in anything beyond their normal painting is when they do the specialty Christmas and Easter presentations. So, in reality, I knew this would be a long shot. The other thing they won't do is combine filling flavors for what I wanted. I had asked for an orange cake with tropical mousse between one set of the layers and passion fruit mousse between the other. I have not tried the tropical mousse yet (pineapple, passion fruit, mango & lime), so we're going to go for that. He said they should be able to do something along the lines of everything else in my sketch. Cost = $155. I'm kind of shocked...I was really expecting a number over $200, so that part makes me happy.

Now, I just have to call Monday to place the orders...right after I try and get a Cali Grill ADR and get Kendall to her first day of school. Busy day! :bookworm:

Your cakes sound delicious!!! I also appreciate all the iron on info and links you've pasted here and in a couple other PTR. I'm looking to possibly put a few minnie ear iron ons on a crossbody bag, and found several I like. Although, that's if I don't splurge and buy the Disney vintage park logos Dooney.

I'm very excited about the cakes!!! :D I'm glad the links were also helpful. I really love all of the boutique looks, but not the prices- especially since they'll get very little wear at home due to school uniform requirements...so, anything I can do to achieve some of that without breaking the bank. I like the idea of the Minnie crossbody, but I can also appreciate the lure of the Dooney. I keep going back and forth with which one I want to get.

A CAKE UPDATE

Nice to hear that the wardrobe for the girls is going well. Yarg on the mask. When things 'get lost in the mail' I wonder about their final destination. Did it go to someone's house? Did it really get shipped? Is it sitting in the post office with an incorrect address? Aliens?

Hooray! A cake update! Sorry to hear about Donald's skirt. Can you bring your own and add it secretly? I don't think you could secretly add your own filling.

Rather than the measuring tape, what about using the suffragette sash? The measuring tape along the bottom tier and the wider suffragette sash along the top tier.

I have this gut feeling it was just never shipped. Thankfully, the seller promptly refunded the $.

Funny, but that's exactly what I was thinking...I just don't know if I want to. It's going to be really fragile and messing around with a miniature edible grass skirt and lei at the table might be more hassle than it's worth. I'd also have to work on it in secret after the kids go to bed and find a good hiding spot. I have a couple of weeks to decide.

I thought about that, but the cake is still so small that there's a good chance it still won't work. What's funny, I think I'm OK with this one since it won't involve everyone leaning in and squinting to see what it says.

I'm really hoping they taste good and are as faithful as possible to my sketches. The passion fruit mousse we had a couple of years ago was delish, so I'm looking forward to trying the tropical mousse. Hey, orange cake with tropical mousse filling does have kind of a breakfasty sound to it...at least that's how I'll try to legitimize the whole thing. ;)

I had no idea you could get a cake for around $50. I just assumed since it's Disney the price would be over the top expensive even for a small cake. Now I just wish we had a reason to order one while we're there!!!!! :)

Actually $50 is on the pricey side for a mini-wedding cake. Something like the one below would be more like $35.

OK...so, a few little updates today (now that I'm done with "my" first day of school homework).

First off, Sammie is thrilled because her mask arrived!!!

9600626749_a2fa0eef0e_z.jpg

I think it's pretty awesome!!!

On a funny cake note, after speaking to the Contemporary to place the order for my cake, I called the Magic Kingdom cake hotline for my mom's cake. Mind you, Chef Donald said he'd be reaching out to them, but I figured I'd drop them a line as well. As I was going through the audio prompts, I got an email from MK's cake contact. What's really funny...aside from the timing...she emailed my work and home address. I don't think I've used my work email address for cake since last November, so I'm guessing they've kept some of my info on file. Nice touch!!!!

We also got Kendall's blue Croc slingbacks today. I'm thinking we probably could have gone a size or 2 smaller. They are the same size as her new Twinkle Toes and the reviews said they ran a bit smaller than regular Croc clogs, but she definitely has some room for growth. I'm sure they'll fit perfectly by next summer

Finally...

DINING CHANGES

If you've been over in the dining area, you may have seen that I booked Cali Grill this morning...which means I canceled Sanaa dinner. Part of it was Sammie's "fireworks beat animals," party was the Mary Blair element, and part was the menu. I'd be fine at Sanaa, even the kids would be fine at Sanaa, but DH- well, I was worried. He's not usually a picky eater, but he hated Boma. We are still going to work in Sanaa, but more in a snackish lunch capacity. So, here's how it went down...

- Sept 19- cxld Sanaa dinner to book Cali Grill dinner
- Sept 20- cxld Boma breakfast and will just have something light at the Mara
- added Sanaa lunch since snacking here might be better than a full meal. I also added the 11:30am seating so we can see the opening ceremony...

- keeping 1900 PF dinner before MNSSHP

I am a little nervous having a meal with a CC guar on night 1, but it's just a risk we're going to have to deal with. Clothes are the other concern. We are scheduled to land at MCO at 2:50p and our ADR is for 7:15pm. I think the girls will be fine with what they're dressed in, but I'm thinking DH and I will need to pack some dressier stuff in our carry ons since I doubt DME baggage will deliver before we need to leave for CG. The good news...I think getting back to AKL from dinner at CG will be less of a nightmare than the original plan to get to the MK buses from the Poly beach. We shall see.

Oh, and DH and I STILL don't have costumes. o_O
