Pre-Trip Lawdy, Lawdy, Look Who's Turning 40 - PTR

I was really tempted to call this the “What the heck are we doing?!?!!?-PTR,” but the reality…this trip is my 40th birthday present to me. Still, it’s one crazy convoluted mess, so at some point you’ll probably catch on to the reason behind the secondary title.

WHO...

Ok...enough about that...there will plenty of time to address the planning insanity.
If you're new to my reports, I'm Sandy...

9037036919_cff2edd2e5_n.jpg

I've been going to WDW since 1985 - even lived in Florida for a while. Soooooo, let's just say I've been to WDW a number of times. :D Beyond that, my 40th is about a month before this trip and this is my gift to me. I'd considered going on my actual 40th; however, I promised myself that our next trip would involve MNSSHP...so, September it is. And if you're familiar with the Cake Talk...I promise you....THERE WILL BE CAKE! In fact, there will be 2 CAKES! But more on that later.

Also, I'm usually the one behind the camera, so you won't be seeing much of me when it comes to the actual TR. Hey, I at least take TONS of pictures (like thousands!). And if you do see me, I doubt you will ever see my hair down since it's usually up on top of my head in the heat and humidity.
Like this...
9036986067_862e1be670_m.jpg

...although, I may add a flower to make it ... well ... cute.

Hey, we live in Texas so heat is our norm, but we also approach it wisely and hair up like this is a great way to keep cool when not wearing a hat to keep my head from baking in the sun.

OK, enough about me (for now)...let's talk about the girls.

284299_10201120529723496_1246768217_n.jpg

The brunette is Kendall...she'll be turning 7 about a month before the trip...and the blonde is Sammie...who will be turning 5 a little over a month after the trip. This will be the girls' 4th trip to WDW.

The girls are total characters. Seriously. Kendall is a drama queen, but insists she's no diva (yeah right!). I could be really mean and post a video of a more recent meltdown, but I'll spare her. Sammie is our tomboy and quiet little trouble maker. Just recently, she tried to see how much toilet paper she could flush down each toilet in the house. Too bad I noticed we were suddenly down 6 rolls AFTER her experiment.

Next up...DH...

He likes, but does not love WDW. He's made it very clear that he's bored with trips to Disney. I told him I'd planned this trip for just me and the girls, but he was invited to come if he'd like. Well, when the first of two SWA fare sales hit, I cornered him on the matter and he agreed to go. Ultimately, I think he has fun and enjoys seeing the girls having such a good time and experiencing new things as they grow. So, I spent several months of having this trip booked not knowing if he'd be joining us... and if things go well job wise...he may still have to bow out. Soooo...really, who knows.

Beyond us...

We are actually being joined by 5...YES 5 ... more family members on day 3 of our trip. My parents will be joining us along with my brother's family. They all live in south Florida, so it's a fairly easy trip up for them. Well, assuming my brother & fam are still able to make it come trip time. They have a bunch of stuff going on and while they've booked lodging and all have orders in for discounted tickets through their employers (perks of living in FL), there's still a chance they'll back out. So, if DH has to stay home and if they back out...we could go from a party of 9 to a party of 5. Insanity I tell you!

When and Where...
Well, the when is fairly drama free...

Sept. 19 - 23

I just rebooked our air, so our arrival and departure changed, but I think it's for the best...since it saved us an additional $512. So instead of arriving at 11:45a, we're arriving around 2:50pm. I don't see that being a huge deal. On the flipside, we'll be getting a lot more time on our last day. I think our original flight had us leaving MCO around 2pm, but now we're leaving just after 7pm. So, more time with my family and more time to play on our last day.

So, that's the when, but the where is complicated...and still bugs me. :(

We were originally booked at the Contemporary...my fave. I was hoping fall discounts would mirror summer discounts so I could splurge on night 1 and stay in an MK facing room in the tower...then switch to the garden wing...but NO...the Sept discounts did not mirror the summer ones. On top of that, Mousesavers (via Small World Vacations) posted some incorrect info on the discounts for the Contemporary. They posted that MK view was 5% (which is correct) and standard rooms were 20% (which was incorrect). I put off calling by a day b/c I didn't know what to do. Overnight, I decided to switch to WL with a 30% off discount since it's a greater savings and it's DH's fave. The % never came up when I was on the phone with Disney that day, but I had to call about something else the next day and found out that the Contemporary discount was 30% for all non-MK facing rooms. Unfortunately, everything in the garden wing was gone and a full trip in the tower was more than I wanted to spend...sooooooo, WL it was. I did complain to Mousesavers and they corrected the problem, but I wonder if I would have gotten the room I wanted at the 30% discount if they'd posted the correct info.

So, now we're staing in WL. Most of our trip was geared for staying at the Contemporary, but WL isn't a huge transition. We'll be staying in a bunk bed room with a woods view. I figure at least it'll make it fun for the kids. I've also asked for 5th floor on the MK side.

Far from a good picture, but we had a nice view from our standard view room the last time we stayed at WL.
5264648958_2f2ed4cf37_m.jpg

I know most people love WL and I shouldn't whine, but I really didn't care for the bedding on our last visit. The room also felt very cramped. Don't get me wrong, the resort is stunning...I just had some issues. Imagine that. I am also wondering how it will feel to have a non-holiday stay at WL. Last time we stayed there...we had a room over the lobby and this beauty greeted us every time we left our room.

5265579207_4f85628682.jpg

Still, we had a great time popping over for drinks at Trout Pass during our summer trip in 2011.... and clearly, there was no tree up at that point.

We are also going to try going stroller free this trip and should have less to bring clothing wise since it's a warm weather trip....so, hopefully that will help the room not feeling as cramped.

Honestly, the real lodging drama is the rest of the family. My parents and brother also lost out on the Contemporary discount, feel that 20% is too little for the Poly, and refuse to stay again at WL... so they're now staying at the Dolphin. Seriously---what's going on here!!!!????!!!! This is really putting a monkey wrench in all of our early morning plans. We'll manage, but not without certain people whining about it. I guess at least they got a really awesome AAA rate...like under $150/nt.

COMING UP...

Calling it a night, but coming up:
Dining
Cakes
Surprises - and to think I said I'd take a break from these
Special Goodies for the Girls
MNSSHP
The Tickets
The School Issues
...and a host of other things.

Thanks for reading :)

Sorry about the cake - I thought it looked great!

Thanks Chris! So tough when I put so much time and effort in, but must move on...I have a Little Mermaid cake that now needs my attention.

Everything went well for my first day of teaching and my daughter's first day of school. Love the boots. I really have no clue what kind of skirt I want. Probably and pink and purple sparkly knit for comfort.

I'm glad things went well for both you and Cadence today. I know the first day of school can be so nerve wracking- especially when you're both mommy and teacher. She is so not feeling the boots, but Kendall sees my vision. So, we're going to have to work on Sammie. My friend reminded me that I have yet to buy mary janes for the girls (a start of school year tradition). So those might be selected so they can also match the costume. We'll see. Agreed on going for a more comfy knit skirt...love tutus, but it's rare that they're comfy for a whole day - let alone a whole day in a Disney park.

Girly outfit alert :hilarious:

I got the top and skirt for the Kendall outfit the other day. I just ironed on the ears and put it all together.

9477498490_9b910c8478.jpg

The shirt seems a bit small to me, but it should still work since the top of the longer pettiskirts fit fairly high on the waist.

I may buy shoes for Kendall's costume this week, but we'll see. It's going to be a busy week with her cake and bday festivities. I still can't believe we're approaching the 1-month mark. That means I'll be emailing about the cakes in the very near future! :jawdrop:

I'm thinking she's going to feel the same. The only thing that would really seal it for her is a pair of "little girl high heels." Not happening...at least not right now.

Love it! Can't wait to see Kendall in it! I can't believe we are so close! I need to make a reminder on my phone calendar to call the cake order in about two weeks. Yeah!!!!

I started to sketch for you the other day, but I got slammed with work (I sketch a lot at my desk). I wanted to sketch it just to sketch it (because I'm silly like that :geek:), but I still think you're going to be better off cost-wise without a sketch.

This is awesome. Hilarious interesting and fun all wrapped up together!!!!

Thank you! :) It helps keep me semi-sane...of course, I may turn into a crazy lady once I start working with the chefs and get down to the wire with the surprise elements. Ahhhh- the fun of a surprise :D

I would like see a sketch just to see if what I have in mind is also what you see. You are so creative and so talented so I know you may have ideas I haven't even thought of. But if you don't have time, don't stress over it. Like you said it will probably cost me less without a sketch. :)

Awwww thanks! :) My problem is that I get too many ideas. I'm really going to try and simplify this b/c I don't want to sketch anything that could be too far out of the budget. I just hate creating and falling in love with a cake design that is well beyond the budget...so, I don't want to do that to you sketch-wise. I'm still not fully over having to give up my Ariel sandcastle cake idea last year. I get to try and do my own version of it this week, but it's still not going to be the same w/o the big white chocolate castle.

Understand completely. I do that to myself every year. I look at all these cakes I want to create and usually take on too much to create it the way I see it in my head. Then I am always disappointed with how it turns out and everyone thinks I am crazy.

Yeah- I'm kind of at an impasse with some of my designs due to a skill set issue. I really need to get over my fears - grab the power saw and drill and start learning to work with PVC piping. I know it would open up a whole world of design if I could build more heavy duty support structures.

Eeek! I wasn't getting updates for this thread for some reason.

Too bad about the S-cake. You should have told the client that the cake was involved in slide for justice.

The Belle outfit is adorable! You picked a lot of good ears for the trip. Does mommy get to dress up too?

Yes! Get out the power saw! Woo! Towering-teetering Disney cakes!

The system can be buggy. I know I don't always get notifications on the Cake Talk thread even though I watch it.

I did make a joke to the guy that the cracked S just gives it more of a "he's been out fighting crime" appearance. Oh well...now I am working on a backdrop piece for Ariel's castle and have to start making seaweed, coral, rocks, etc.

I'm really happy with the Belle outfit. I've gotten pretty lucky with the selection of appliques on etsy. I still need to pick out ones for me & DH, but I'm still not 100% what I want to do for those.

I think we have most of the tools and my MIL has channeled her inner handyman during retirement- so she could help...but I would like to find some good tutorials on building suitable structures. My cake idol :hilarious: (http://www.mikesamazingcakes.com/) puts on at least one structure building class in Austin each year, but the classes from any of the celebrity cake chefs are super expensive. Like $450-850 for a single day class. :jawdrop::eek:

WOOOHOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!:D:happy::):inlove:

I paid for our lodging and MNSSHP tickets today!!!:greedy: So, at this point, all savings go towards dining, cakes, and souvenirs!!! :geek::p

It was also good that I called b/c my birthday mysteriously disappeared from the reservation celebration.

Awesome!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Always a good thing to call and check in.

Last time I spoke to anyone at Disney- I got concerned b/c they said by bday, mom mom's bday and my nephew's bday were all on the reservation. The other 2 were only supposed to be on certain dining ADRs. Still even though they swore it was OK- it didn't sound right. Glad I checked.

This is the first time that I'm doing a lot of Disney themed clothing, but still- just love planning it all out. Good to start now...this way you will be so well prepared with cute things come trip time! Yeah- it's hard to believe this is all going down in just a little over a month. I guess at least I have a birthday cake to make this week and tons of back to school stuff to keep me pretty preoccupied until the weekend after Labor Day. Thanks for reading!!! :)

So, some of you probably saw that I'm dropping some ADRs. Akershus is definitely going. I know - I know...I was so excited to have a princess meal, but after seeing how good Kendall is with the Snow White costume and seeing how nicely the Belle outfit turned out...I don't think we need the meal. The reality, I hate doing TS lunch- just totally disrupts the day for us. Plus, Chef Mickey's for breakfast and Kouzzina for dinner is going to be more than enough food. At least I was thinking about dropping this before the storms fried our thermostat. I'm still not sure what we're going to do about the whole Kona/Boma dilemma.

On a costume note...Sammie's mask hasn't arrived yet. It's coming in from Hong Kong so I knew it would take a while, but today is the end of the estimated delivery window, so I'm hoping it arrives soon. We also still haven't figured out shoes for Kendall's costume. Everything is either too big, too small, or way more than I'm will to spend.

And on a FUN note...I bring you CAKE!!! Here is Kendall's Ariel birthday cake...complete with snarfblatt and dinglehopper. I also thought the silver platter would be a nice touch...like another one of Ariel's shipwreck treasures. It's a caramel chocolate cake with dark chocolate/marshmallow filling and cocoa buttercream. I don't love the topper (it's actually Sophia the First's castle), but it's not bad either...especially since I've never done anything like this before.

Now just hoping it survives the short drive to the girls' daycare/summer camp.

We're also having a Disney-esque bday dinner tomorrow...going to the Galveston RFC...although, I think we're going to skip the cheesy boat ride this time.

I'll also be putting in my email to the Disney chefs for our trip cakes on Monday. FIngers crossed that goes well!

Thanks!!! It was a huge hit too :) I love when the kids have that a-ha moment and realize it's all edible. We almost had some fights over brain coral LOL :hilarious: It's really too bad I couldn't do something for Cadence. I found an edible version of my inspiration image for your cake sketch...

Not my preferred guy that gives me cash back, but still...it's available...and I probably could get him to make it as a custom. Sugarcraft also sells a fantasy gumpaste flower similar to the shape of the blossoms in the image...
GFF720W.jpg

So, after some petal dust...it really would just be a matter of using fondant to create the connecting branches.

I hope you hear back from the chef soon. I real hate that in limbo waiting game. :grumpy: I wish I could remember which days Chef Brian is off. I want to say one of them is Tuesday, so maybe I'll send my email on Sunday night. I've also started thinking about where I'd cut back if I don't like the price. Thinking having Donald in silver & gold vs. fully painted may be the first change on the big cake and I could scrap the carousel horse on the little cake. Hate thinking about scrapping things, but paying too much is also not a happy thing. OY.
