Pre-Trip Lawdy, Lawdy, Look Who's Turning 40 - PTR

I was really tempted to call this the “What the heck are we doing?!?!!?-PTR,” but the reality…this trip is my 40th birthday present to me. Still, it’s one crazy convoluted mess, so at some point you’ll probably catch on to the reason behind the secondary title.

WHO...

Ok...enough about that...there will plenty of time to address the planning insanity.
If you're new to my reports, I'm Sandy...

I've been going to WDW since 1985 - even lived in Florida for a while. Soooooo, let's just say I've been to WDW a number of times. :D Beyond that, my 40th is about a month before this trip and this is my gift to me. I'd considered going on my actual 40th; however, I promised myself that our next trip would involve MNSSHP...so, September it is. And if you're familiar with the Cake Talk...I promise you....THERE WILL BE CAKE! In fact, there will be 2 CAKES! But more on that later.

Also, I'm usually the one behind the camera, so you won't be seeing much of me when it comes to the actual TR. Hey, I at least take TONS of pictures (like thousands!). And if you do see me, I doubt you will ever see my hair down since it's usually up on top of my head in the heat and humidity.
Like this...

...although, I may add a flower to make it ... well ... cute.

Hey, we live in Texas so heat is our norm, but we also approach it wisely and hair up like this is a great way to keep cool when not wearing a hat to keep my head from baking in the sun.

OK, enough about me (for now)...let's talk about the girls.

284299_10201120529723496_1246768217_n.jpg

The brunette is Kendall...she'll be turning 7 about a month before the trip...and the blonde is Sammie...who will be turning 5 a little over a month after the trip. This will be the girls' 4th trip to WDW.

The girls are total characters. Seriously. Kendall is a drama queen, but insists she's no diva (yeah right!). I could be really mean and post a video of a more recent meltdown, but I'll spare her. Sammie is our tomboy and quiet little trouble maker. Just recently, she tried to see how much toilet paper she could flush down each toilet in the house. Too bad I noticed we were suddenly down 6 rolls AFTER her experiment.

Next up...DH...

He likes, but does not love WDW. He's made it very clear that he's bored with trips to Disney. I told him I'd planned this trip for just me and the girls, but he was invited to come if he'd like. Well, when the first of two SWA fare sales hit, I cornered him on the matter and he agreed to go. Ultimately, I think he has fun and enjoys seeing the girls having such a good time and experiencing new things as they grow. So, I spent several months of having this trip booked not knowing if he'd be joining us... and if things go well job wise...he may still have to bow out. Soooo...really, who knows.

Beyond us...

We are actually being joined by 5...YES 5 ... more family members on day 3 of our trip. My parents will be joining us along with my brother's family. They all live in south Florida, so it's a fairly easy trip up for them. Well, assuming my brother & fam are still able to make it come trip time. They have a bunch of stuff going on and while they've booked lodging and all have orders in for discounted tickets through their employers (perks of living in FL), there's still a chance they'll back out. So, if DH has to stay home and if they back out...we could go from a party of 9 to a party of 5. Insanity I tell you!

When and Where...
Well, the when is fairly drama free...

Sept. 19 - 23

I just rebooked our air, so our arrival and departure changed, but I think it's for the best...since it saved us an additional $512. So instead of arriving at 11:45a, we're arriving around 2:50pm. I don't see that being a huge deal. On the flipside, we'll be getting a lot more time on our last day. I think our original flight had us leaving MCO around 2pm, but now we're leaving just after 7pm. So, more time with my family and more time to play on our last day.

So, that's the when, but the where is complicated...and still bugs me. :(

We were originally booked at the Contemporary...my fave. I was hoping fall discounts would mirror summer discounts so I could splurge on night 1 and stay in an MK facing room in the tower...then switch to the garden wing...but NO...the Sept discounts did not mirror the summer ones. On top of that, Mousesavers (via Small World Vacations) posted some incorrect info on the discounts for the Contemporary. They posted that MK view was 5% (which is correct) and standard rooms were 20% (which was incorrect). I put off calling by a day b/c I didn't know what to do. Overnight, I decided to switch to WL with a 30% off discount since it's a greater savings and it's DH's fave. The % never came up when I was on the phone with Disney that day, but I had to call about something else the next day and found out that the Contemporary discount was 30% for all non-MK facing rooms. Unfortunately, everything in the garden wing was gone and a full trip in the tower was more than I wanted to spend...sooooooo, WL it was. I did complain to Mousesavers and they corrected the problem, but I wonder if I would have gotten the room I wanted at the 30% discount if they'd posted the correct info.

So, now we're staing in WL. Most of our trip was geared for staying at the Contemporary, but WL isn't a huge transition. We'll be staying in a bunk bed room with a woods view. I figure at least it'll make it fun for the kids. I've also asked for 5th floor on the MK side.

Far from a good picture, but we had a nice view from our standard view room the last time we stayed at WL.

I know most people love WL and I shouldn't whine, but I really didn't care for the bedding on our last visit. The room also felt very cramped. Don't get me wrong, the resort is stunning...I just had some issues. Imagine that. I am also wondering how it will feel to have a non-holiday stay at WL. Last time we stayed there...we had a room over the lobby and this beauty greeted us every time we left our room.

5265579207_4f85628682.jpg

Still, we had a great time popping over for drinks at Trout Pass during our summer trip in 2011.... and clearly, there was no tree up at that point.

We are also going to try going stroller free this trip and should have less to bring clothing wise since it's a warm weather trip....so, hopefully that will help the room not feeling as cramped.

Honestly, the real lodging drama is the rest of the family. My parents and brother also lost out on the Contemporary discount, feel that 20% is too little for the Poly, and refuse to stay again at WL... so they're now staying at the Dolphin. Seriously---what's going on here!!!!????!!!! This is really putting a monkey wrench in all of our early morning plans. We'll manage, but not without certain people whining about it. I guess at least they got a really awesome AAA rate...like under $150/nt.

COMING UP...

Calling it a night, but coming up:
Dining
Cakes
Surprises - and to think I said I'd take a break from these
Special Goodies for the Girls

WARDROBE CHANGE
(aka...mom is scheming and possibly being a selfish person :cautious:)

So, I'm heading to the Disney Store this week to check out flip flops, tee shirts, and bathing suits. It occurred to me that they had discounted costumes the last time I went in there. While I don't feel that the Disney Store costumes are the same level of quality as our park authentic costumes, they are a bit cheaper- especially if they're on sale at the outlet. So, I asked the girls how they'd feel about not being the Batman family IF I could get decent costumes at the outlet. Kendall was all over it, especially since she was trying to decide on a princess for Halloween before I reminded her of the whole Batman Family thing. Sammie wasn't as receptive, but she warmed up when I said that Ironman, Spiderman, Hulk, and Captain America would be possible options.

Sammie- she picked Ironman as her #1 choice. I'm not opposed to that, but considering I got her a Spiderman set of mouse ears...it seemed more fitting that she be Spiderman. Plus, I found light up masks to pair with the costumes and Spiderman is the clear winner...

...well, at least to me.

Kendall - Kendall picked Belle. Belle has been Kendall's favorite since 2011 so I know she'd love it, but I don't want her to be Belle. She's been Belle- granted she was 3 - but still, SHE'S BEEN BELLE! :p Ariel would be the next obvious choice since we've changed her bday plans and that's the plan for her cake. While I love that her cake would fulfill a cake dream in the form of a sketch/idea I worked up but didn't do for Sammie's Disney cake last year...Kendall's also been Ariel- when she was 2. So, here's where selfish comes in...

I have ALWAYS wanted Kendall to be Snow White. Every year I beg, and every year she says she'll do it and then picks a different princess. She even had her hair chopped last month and she looks even more Snow White-ish...
1017466_10201429256121463_1103474758_n.jpg

I feel so torn, but I REALLY want her to be Snow White for my bday trip. My parents will be sending $ for her bday, so I'm thinking about using some of it to buy a Belle costume for later...call it an early "unbirthday" present for Sammie's bday (we always do that- a small gift for the unbirthday girl on the other girl's bday)...since Sammie's bday is about a week after Halloween- it could work. This way, Kendall does get to be Belle for Halloween as she's requested, but I get her as Snow White for my bday MNSSHP trip. I'd just tell her they didn't have Belle in her size. Am I bad? :devilish: Or by adding the Belle surprise for Halloween, is it all good?:angelic:

Of course, all this change would also mean no "Bat" costumes for me or DH. DH really wasn't feeling the whole Robin idea...so, I'm thinking about making us our own mouse ears shirts. Mine would be princess ears and I'd wear my tiara (yes, I own a tiara :D) and I'd make a pirate ears shirt for DH and combine it with an eye patch and bandana.

What do we think???

Totally understand where you are coming from. I want Cadence to wear her Belle dress to meet Belle at Akershus. So far, no luck. She says she is going to be Mulan. Easier on my suitcase yes, but not what I imagined. :)

Yeah- Belle is a much more poufy dress. It reminds me of the 2011 surprise when I was trying to jam their poufy Cinderella and Ariel gowns into my suitcase. I imagine Kendall would be OK with my plan if she knew all of the details, since she'd still get to parade around as Belle in front of her friends at home...I think. You did just give me a crazy...yes, CRAZY idea. I might have to report back on that later ;)

Can't wait! Also, you wanna do a sketch for Cade's Mulan cake?

OK- wound up happening faster than I'd expected...well, at least the plan B version (which is now feeling more plan A). I haven't really discussed it in the PTR, but I keep feeling like something is missing...and I'm pretty sure it's a traditional princess meal (1900PF just isn't cutting it- although I will keep it). Initially, I thought I would prefer to book CRT for our predominantly MK day, but Akershus on our predominantly Epcot day has been sticking in the back of my mind as a plan B.

Either way, I have to give up something. If I do CRT for lunch/late break on the 22nd...I have to give up BoG lunch. If I do Akershus on our mainly Epcot day...I have to give up Via Napoli.

I hadn't really looked much for plan B, but I was really hoping to turn up the last breakfast seating at CRT with some stalking (which started over the last week)...but the whole Belle costume could work as a great "during the trip Surprise" if I went with Akershus. She'd be FLOORED if we headed to Epcot, got on a few attractions, just to have me pull out a Belle gown from my backpack.

So, what did I do? I booked a late breakfast seating at Akershus on our mainly Epcot day. I may have a change of heart with this as it's a lot more $ than just splitting pizza at Via Napoli, but I love the idea and there is a sense of it feeling complete with doing this. I'd just need to do something for Sammie to balance it out. I guess I could toss in her Jasmine costume since she is her fave- but I still feel like she'd be slighted a bit.

As for the sketch, I can definitely try and make one. I'd just need a verbal description of everything you'd like to see in the cake.

Edit...late breakfast seemed silly. So, started the stalk for the earliest lunch seating (11:55a) this morning. I never had to stalk...it was suddenly just "there." 3 TS meals in a day is nuts, but DH and I will likely share at Kouzzina- so that should help. I've completely nixed CRT. While I prefer it to Akershus as far as setting goes, I only like CRT for breakfast. I think their last breakfast seating is 10:40a...so it makes no sense. i.e. an 8:05a a Crystal Palace followed by a 10:40a at CRT is just silly. Soooo...keeping the plan to try BOG for lunch on our mainly MK day...and unless K goes crazy about costume stuff or the budget goes nuts- Akershus for lunch for us on our mainly Epcot day- while the rest of my fam heads to Via Napoli.

Isn't mom allowed to make requests for her own birthday? Mom should be allowed to pick the costume family for one day. Yes, Halloween is important. Yes, kids should get to wear their choice of costume at least once during the Halloween season. Mom gets to pick a day, too. Especially if it is for Mom's birthday.

Humphf!

I'm thinking a vacation in Fall of 2014 is in order LOL

I've already started thinking about how I'm going to try and continue to sell this to DH while we're there in Sept. i.e. pointing out a few of the places we could truly enjoy if we went back for an "us" trip.

I like the way you think! :) And the reality, all they need to be told is "they didn't have Belle or Ironman."

We have an ADR at Kouzzina this trip, and while I don't want to leave DHS too early- especially since we're trying to hit Characterpolooza that day, but if we arrive a tad too early to check in and before the rest of my family- we can linger around BWI a bit - i.e make the boardwalk aspects seem really appealing.

I love the idea of adding in a princess meal. For us it just isn't a trip to Disney World without one and I think Kendall will be over the moon. Now if only there was a way to meet with Ironman....we need to get on that.

I do too. I just need to decide what I'll do if CRT opens up. I have 2 Pros for CRT and 2 Pros for Akershus.
Pro CRT- food...MUCH prefer CRT breakfast to Akershus breakfast
Pro CRT- setting...the castle is pretty hard to beat
Pro Akershus - what I give up...I am better with giving up Via Napoli vs. giving up BOG lunch
Pro Akershus - cost...it's a $20 difference- not huge but these things add up

Sammie prefers the castle, but that doesn't really help me as a tie breaker since by doing Akershus- Kendall would get 2 meals with Belle emphasis...but in doing CRT, Kendall gets no Belle meal emphasis. So, I can't really even it out with our schedule. Hmmm....

I definitely am excited about Akershus, but wish we had time and money to fit in CRT. I have been there previous two trips and think I will miss it a lot. Hoping we make so many new memories it won't matter. :)

There is something very special about dining in the castle. Still, it sounds like we're both going to be skipping it this trip. I guess there is one more pro that I could add to the mix for Akershus- it always seems to be a shorter meal than CRT...so, less park time missed. Like you said- lots of new memories and experiences. :) And I guess if nobody is feeling the princess meal thing come trip time...I could certainly cancel in time and join the rest of the family for pizza. Splitting a mezzo metro 9 ways + drinks would be A LOT cheaper. Plus, we have Chef Mickey's + cake at 7am that morning...so a late breakfast at Akershus would definitely be less about food. So, we'll see.

Can I go with you? The princess meal didn't exist when I was princess-aged and the DH and DS don't care much for the M&Gs.

<tantrum mode>:arghh: I wanna be a princess, too!!! :arghh:

Maybe there is another reason I haven't done a princess meal. I did the "Which Disney Villain Are You?" thing and I keep coming up as Lady Tremaine.

Me too!!! I turned into a giddy little girl back in 2009 when I learned they offered princess dining in the castle. Now I'm thinking I need to wear my tiara at Akershus as well! I know full on costumes are off limits for adults, but crowns and tiaras are usually A-OK.

I wish I could take you with us...you could promenade with the princesses when it's time to do their little parade around the restaurant.

Awwww- don't feel back about the quiz results. I mean- it has to come up with an answer and most of the answers are princess related villains. I took something similar a while back...I think I was Maleficent...since apparently I'd take great offense if I was intentionally not invited to a party. ;) Oddly enough, Sleeping Beauty is my fave princess movie.

Sure! My mom is going to CRT for her birthday breakfast. So I say DH and DS can get over it for your next trip. :)

I'm jealous of your mom :D

Adorable! Yes, she does have the hair and coloring for an adorable Snow White.

What did you get from your Disney Store trip? Did you get any costumes or trip items?
