Pre-Trip Lawdy, Lawdy, Look Who's Turning 40 - PTR

I was really tempted to call this the “What the heck are we doing?!?!!?-PTR,” but the reality…this trip is my 40th birthday present to me. Still, it’s one crazy convoluted mess, so at some point you’ll probably catch on to the reason behind the secondary title.

WHO...

Ok...enough about that...there will plenty of time to address the planning insanity.
If you're new to my reports, I'm Sandy...

9037036919_cff2edd2e5_n.jpg

I've been going to WDW since 1985 - even lived in Florida for a while. Soooooo, let's just say I've been to WDW a number of times. :D Beyond that, my 40th is about a month before this trip and this is my gift to me. I'd considered going on my actual 40th; however, I promised myself that our next trip would involve MNSSHP...so, September it is. And if you're familiar with the Cake Talk...I promise you....THERE WILL BE CAKE! In fact, there will be 2 CAKES! But more on that later.

Also, I'm usually the one behind the camera, so you won't be seeing much of me when it comes to the actual TR. Hey, I at least take TONS of pictures (like thousands!). And if you do see me, I doubt you will ever see my hair down since it's usually up on top of my head in the heat and humidity.
Like this...
9036986067_862e1be670_m.jpg

...although, I may add a flower to make it ... well ... cute.

Hey, we live in Texas so heat is our norm, but we also approach it wisely and hair up like this is a great way to keep cool when not wearing a hat to keep my head from baking in the sun.

OK, enough about me (for now)...let's talk about the girls.

284299_10201120529723496_1246768217_n.jpg

The brunette is Kendall...she'll be turning 7 about a month before the trip...and the blonde is Sammie...who will be turning 5 a little over a month after the trip. This will be the girls' 4th trip to WDW.

The girls are total characters. Seriously. Kendall is a drama queen, but insists she's no diva (yeah right!). I could be really mean and post a video of a more recent meltdown, but I'll spare her. Sammie is our tomboy and quiet little trouble maker. Just recently, she tried to see how much toilet paper she could flush down each toilet in the house. Too bad I noticed we were suddenly down 6 rolls AFTER her experiment.

Next up...DH...

He likes, but does not love WDW. He's made it very clear that he's bored with trips to Disney. I told him I'd planned this trip for just me and the girls, but he was invited to come if he'd like. Well, when the first of two SWA fare sales hit, I cornered him on the matter and he agreed to go. Ultimately, I think he has fun and enjoys seeing the girls having such a good time and experiencing new things as they grow. So, I spent several months of having this trip booked not knowing if he'd be joining us... and if things go well job wise...he may still have to bow out. Soooo...really, who knows.

Beyond us...

We are actually being joined by 5...YES 5 ... more family members on day 3 of our trip. My parents will be joining us along with my brother's family. They all live in south Florida, so it's a fairly easy trip up for them. Well, assuming my brother & fam are still able to make it come trip time. They have a bunch of stuff going on and while they've booked lodging and all have orders in for discounted tickets through their employers (perks of living in FL), there's still a chance they'll back out. So, if DH has to stay home and if they back out...we could go from a party of 9 to a party of 5. Insanity I tell you!

When and Where...
Well, the when is fairly drama free...

Sept. 19 - 23

I just rebooked our air, so our arrival and departure changed, but I think it's for the best...since it saved us an additional $512. So instead of arriving at 11:45a, we're arriving around 2:50pm. I don't see that being a huge deal. On the flipside, we'll be getting a lot more time on our last day. I think our original flight had us leaving MCO around 2pm, but now we're leaving just after 7pm. So, more time with my family and more time to play on our last day.

So, that's the when, but the where is complicated...and still bugs me. :(

We were originally booked at the Contemporary...my fave. I was hoping fall discounts would mirror summer discounts so I could splurge on night 1 and stay in an MK facing room in the tower...then switch to the garden wing...but NO...the Sept discounts did not mirror the summer ones. On top of that, Mousesavers (via Small World Vacations) posted some incorrect info on the discounts for the Contemporary. They posted that MK view was 5% (which is correct) and standard rooms were 20% (which was incorrect). I put off calling by a day b/c I didn't know what to do. Overnight, I decided to switch to WL with a 30% off discount since it's a greater savings and it's DH's fave. The % never came up when I was on the phone with Disney that day, but I had to call about something else the next day and found out that the Contemporary discount was 30% for all non-MK facing rooms. Unfortunately, everything in the garden wing was gone and a full trip in the tower was more than I wanted to spend...sooooooo, WL it was. I did complain to Mousesavers and they corrected the problem, but I wonder if I would have gotten the room I wanted at the 30% discount if they'd posted the correct info.

So, now we're staing in WL. Most of our trip was geared for staying at the Contemporary, but WL isn't a huge transition. We'll be staying in a bunk bed room with a woods view. I figure at least it'll make it fun for the kids. I've also asked for 5th floor on the MK side.

Far from a good picture, but we had a nice view from our standard view room the last time we stayed at WL.
5264648958_2f2ed4cf37_m.jpg

I know most people love WL and I shouldn't whine, but I really didn't care for the bedding on our last visit. The room also felt very cramped. Don't get me wrong, the resort is stunning...I just had some issues. Imagine that. I am also wondering how it will feel to have a non-holiday stay at WL. Last time we stayed there...we had a room over the lobby and this beauty greeted us every time we left our room.

5265579207_4f85628682.jpg

Still, we had a great time popping over for drinks at Trout Pass during our summer trip in 2011.... and clearly, there was no tree up at that point.

We are also going to try going stroller free this trip and should have less to bring clothing wise since it's a warm weather trip....so, hopefully that will help the room not feeling as cramped.

Honestly, the real lodging drama is the rest of the family. My parents and brother also lost out on the Contemporary discount, feel that 20% is too little for the Poly, and refuse to stay again at WL... so they're now staying at the Dolphin. Seriously---what's going on here!!!!????!!!! This is really putting a monkey wrench in all of our early morning plans. We'll manage, but not without certain people whining about it. I guess at least they got a really awesome AAA rate...like under $150/nt.

COMING UP...

Calling it a night, but coming up:
Dining
Cakes
Surprises - and to think I said I'd take a break from these
Special Goodies for the Girls
MNSSHP
The Tickets
The School Issues
...and a host of other things.

Thanks for reading :)

I'm sort of in love with your cake designs. I watched Mary Poppins for the first time in years a couple if weeks ago (my daughter's first time seeing it) and remembered how great it really is. That cake idea is fabulous! I envy your creativity.

Oh, and totally agree with spreading the birthday celebration over several months, heck, even the whole year. Milestones like this are made to be celebrated, at least that's how I'm dealing with it!

Soooo excited for you. That is on our bucket list. I definitely want to try it sometime soon. I cannot wait to see your pics of it! You always take really cool pics of the resorts so I will feel like I am there trying it too!

I'm hoping I don't miss staying over near MK too much, but AKL is also one of those places that I've really wanted to try. The girls have only seen it at night and they were 2 and 4 when they were last in there...so, I'm hoping it kind of blows them away. I will try and take lots of pics. :)

Bottom line, the drive times to the Parks aren't a drop in the bucket relative to getting around Houston.

Don't even get me started on my commute! My vehicle will be 1 year old this week and I've put close to 22k miles on it in just a year b/c of my commute. DH's is actually worse! Very excited though...get to work from home for the first time tomorrow. :) Honestly, as long as it's not as frustrating as the waits we experienced when we stayed at WL ... I'll be good.

Thanks! I adore Mary Poppins :) When I pitched the idea of a mini wedding cake to my mom, she and my dad happened to catch a glimpse of a Nemo themed cake and suggested I go that route since my mom loves sea inspired things. My gut keeps telling me that the Mary Poppins measuring tape trumps sea life. I swear- the creativity is a blessing and a curse. ;)

It's been pretty fun so far "Celebrating the Year of 40!" :D While I have to make sure the budget can handle it, I've got a little over a year of plans to keep it fun. Next stop with the celebration...Bourbon Street! :D

I am so excited for your AKL bunk bed room!!! So funny I was on the website tonight looking at the bunk bed rooms and they look great!!!

Part of me feels silly spending the extra $ since two queens should be perfectly fine...but then part of me tries to think about it like a kid and how that could easily wind up being their favorite part of the trip. Between bunk bed and animals...this could easily end up being their favorite resort. :)

Looks like we are going to miss the opportunity to meet by a few days. We are checking out from a week at BLT Sept. 15 and you are checking in to WL Sept. 19....I know you would like meeting my wife...oh well, our paths may cross again some day and if so maybe we could arrange a quick hello in a park or resort. By the way, WL is wonderful...we have stayed in a one bedroom and two bedroom villa and both were great. Love hidden Springs pool, especially early morning when it is quiet.
When you check in see if you can be a flag family....if they have space (first come, First served) your family can raise the flags over the resort one morning. It was the highlight of our trip in May, 2013. Just read back and realized you changed resorts...never mind about the WL info...hope you do go to WL sometime...we love it and we have been tying different resorts for years and so far, WL is our only repeat.

Holy moley! That's alot of driving. We've stayed at and used Disney transportation at CBR, CSR and AKL. Each day is different. We had good days and bad days at each.

We felt this way with table service eating and upgrading to AKL.

Great PTR, I totally get your IASW/Donald cake sketch, it'll be gorgeous if they can pull it off. I'm pretty sure I'd have a problem cutting into it, though!!

Have fun with all your celebrations!! Round numbers deserve numerous recognitions. And 50's not bad at all...I'll hit it next month (fellow Leo!) and have two trips planned, one of which is a girls cruise with some of the lovely ladies from WDWMagic!

Looking forward to the rest of your plans. ;)

That's a bummer that we'll miss you guys. I'm jealous that you're stayling in BLT :D I really had my heart set on the Contemporary for this trip, but it's just not in the cards. As for the resort change, we've at least tried WL before. We spent a week there in Dec 2010...wanted our first WL experience to be with the full holiday regalia. Funny you bring up flag family...I asked a number of times during that trip, but no such luck :( I'm really hoping we enjoy AKL...kind of like what you were noting- i.e. trying different resorts. I've only been in there once and it was for a Boma ADR back with that 2010 trip.

I know! I got to try out working from home today and let's just say I LOOOOOVE the commute. That walk from the bedroom to the sofa is a breeze ;) I get to fight the traffic again tomorrow, but hopefully I'll get to stay at home once a week. What's funny with bus servce...WL is the only resort where we've ever had issues.

It's just so strange that there are some splurges that won't make me bat an eyelash while others cause significant guilt. I might need to find a Disney psychologist :D

The "if they can pull it off" part is what worries me with my cake.

Happy early birthday to you!!! :) Glad to hear you're celebrating with trips. Can't wait to see all of the TRs that come from the cruise. Sounds like you guys are really going to have blast!

I'm glad you had a good commute today! Is traffic better now that it's summer?

You don't need a shrink. You sound completely normal.

Traffic is better over the summer...30-45 min. In fact, traffic should be light enough on Friday that I should be able to stop by the market on my way into work so I can get my food day item.

I think it's totally normal to Disney fans, but friends who don't get can sometimes get in your head. I have one friend who is a Disney fan...but not a Disney fan like me...and she's accused me of being a TS dining snob. I've tried to explain my obession with booking dining, the allergy issues, how dining factored into childhood trips and how I just find it's more relaxing...but she equates that- somehow- to snobbery. No, Disney dining snobbery is my college friend (and fellow Disney fan) saying "Sandy, maybe your DH would enjoy WDW more if you made better dining choices." Minus a few small exceptions, she'll only do signature dining. She has her parents tag along to take their children to "lesser" meals. o_O So, I've just learned that she and I can't discuss Disney dining.

TEST FAILED

So, I had previously noted wanting to wake the girls up with Grim Grinning Ghosts on the morning of the surprise/departure. Well, I decided to try waking the girls up with it yesterday. Sammie passed with flying colors, but Kendall started screaming - TOTAL TERROR! Not exactly what I want for a surprise reveal. Of course, Ijust minutes ago she is no longer afraid of HM (all to watch a scary movie:rolleyes:). Sooooo, clearly I need to switch out the music, but it led me to a semi-brilliant (I thinko_O) idea.

I'm big on holiday specials, holiday music and holiday decorating...and by holidays, I mean all holidays :D (ok- at least A LOT of them). The girls know that I can't put out the Halloween decor until Oct 1, but that I'll let them start watching Halloween specials like the Great Pumpkin and listening to my Halloween music as soon as it's officially fall. The autumnal equinox for 2013 is Sept 22nd, so I'm thinking of psyching the girls up for it in the days leading up to the trip....like, "guess what? At this time next week we'll be able to watch the Great Pumpkin and hear the Monster Mash!" It's not Disney, but it would certainly get their attention and it definitely wouldn't scare Kendall. I might just leave it on my Halloween mix and restructure it so that Grim Grinning Ghosts plays 2nd.

Beyond that...just trying to decide what to do about a couple of breakfasts. As much as I love 1900PF, not sure if I want to trek over to the MK area on our day 2 morning now that we're staying at AKL. I still think I want to make that trip over on our last day so we get to try Kona and catch the MK rope drop show, but it feels kind of silly to have a free day on the 20th just to spend a bunch of bank and forth time on the bus. I know Boma gets high marks for breakfast...so thinking I may switch to that. Decisions...

Yea! :) I like summer traffic. My gas mileage is better.

The friend you first describe needs to walk a mile in your shoes - my two cents. Your second friend - wow. Just wow.

The first friend means well and in all honesty, if it were in her budget, she'd likely do more TS meals too. The second friend has never wanted for much, so she kind of lacks the perspective how people travel with budgets. Case in point- on their last trip, they shelled out the $ for a Disney provided VIP tour guide for an entire day at MK. Mind you, they're DVC members and go at least once every other year- so they know what they're doing, but that's just how they are. No crime in it, but I get the feeling that our trips and planning/budgeting mindsets are in very different places.

Maybe, I'm weird, but I'd be OK without TS meals during our next trip. Your "very different places" description seems very accurate.

If you don't mind music from another park, how about Trick or Treat on Halloween Street from Tokyo? It is an upbeat Halloween song and if you stick around for the second half, you get to hear Mickey Mouse speak Japanese. The Obake (ghost) song is in Japanese and has a hand-jive.

Notice that the crowd is *sitting* for the parade. Best...idea...ever!

At about 2 minutes, this video has a nice music-box version of the song without words. Around 3:30 is a cute version of the Haunted Mansion theme. https://www.youtube.com/watch?NR=1&v=snRmBP-u_Jg&feature=endscreen

In all honesty, I'm not even sure why I like doing TS so much. I guess maybe it's just the experience. Example: When I booked 50s PT for our last trip, my brain was thinking of Mama's Cafe in Houston and San Antonio. The food at 50s wasn't even close, but the atmosphere and experience were worth it. I guess I'm just a sucker for those things.

What a coincidence!!! I had just watched this the other day. I've been on a kick lately with Tokyo...or maybe it's just jealousy over some of the awesome things they have over there. I think my biggest concern with the music here is that it's from another park, but if I decide to do some kind of mix...I'll probably work it in.

Love how the crowd sits! :) If only it would catch on over here.

What about Boo-to-you from Mickey's Not So Scary Halloween parade for your morning wake up music?

We played it on repeat at our house during Trick or Treat last year and the kids all loved it.

Too funny...I was watching the parade earlier today and thinking "this may be my music!!!" What a coincidence! :D I think I may even have a plan to introduce the kids to it before the surprise so it registers with them come surprise morning.

Minor updates...

1. After reading @figmentfan423 's TR and her issues with Sci Fi and allergy issues, I decided I had to drop the ADR. I've heard a few minor things in the past, but this kind of stuff really scares me. I have flashbacks to Kendall's big allergic reaction in 2011 and can't handle the thought of going through that again. I mean, I know it could happen, but best to avoid places that have allergy issues. It's got me rethinking Raglan Road too...I read several different indicents with allergy issues. In one case, a tree nut allergic person was given something with almonds and they had the nerve to try and pass it off as a large oat. I still have some time to decide...but I may scrap it just for safety purposes. I guess that brings up a ?...

Where would you go for lunch in DTD?

I have a few rules...1) nothing we've tried before 2) nothing we can have locally 3) nothing DH has given a flat out no. So, that eliminates all Wolfgang Puck, House of Blues, Planet Hollywood, Pollo, Earl, RFC, and TRex.

2. I decided it was silly to wake up on Sept 20th, go over to the GF for breakfast, then back to AKL for the day, then back to GF for dinner before MK for MNSSHP. Soooo, as much as I adore 1900PF for breakfast...I canceled it. I booked Boma in its place, but we're going to play that by ear.

3. @meyeet and I seemed to have the same music idea on the same day...great minds!!! :D I think Boo To You would work really well for the wake up surprise...and I even have a good way to introduce it. They usually post videos and clips when WDW has their first MNSSHP of the season. The girls know about my "no Halloween music and shows until fall" rule, so I could easily bring it up within that week. i.e. something like "LOOK! Disney's started doing their Halloween parties! Guess they don't play by mommy's rules." I can always ask them if they want to watch the parade. We usually have to start these thing over a few times for everyone to settle down, so that should really get the Boo To You music into their heads.

4. And a final silly note for the day...it was brought to my attention that I have not dressed up as a cat of any sort since college. My one friend felt that Catwoman must be my calling for this trip...and decided to share this old pic of me just sort of reinforcing that it's my destiny ;) - sorry it's fuzzy, but I had to crop everyone else out and she took a picture of a picture...which never turns out quite right.

9154102543_73a80e1ef5.jpg

Yup- meant to be Catwoman. Now to go do the workout I haven't done since I was about this age. Man is it kicking my butt!
