Pre-Trip Lawdy, Lawdy, Look Who's Turning 40 - PTR

I was really tempted to call this the “What the heck are we doing?!?!!?-PTR,” but the reality…this trip is my 40th birthday present to me. Still, it’s one crazy convoluted mess, so at some point you’ll probably catch on to the reason behind the secondary title.

WHO...

Ok...enough about that...there will plenty of time to address the planning insanity.
If you're new to my reports, I'm Sandy...

I've been going to WDW since 1985 - even lived in Florida for a while. Soooooo, let's just say I've been to WDW a number of times. :D Beyond that, my 40th is about a month before this trip and this is my gift to me. I'd considered going on my actual 40th; however, I promised myself that our next trip would involve MNSSHP...so, September it is. And if you're familiar with the Cake Talk...I promise you....THERE WILL BE CAKE! In fact, there will be 2 CAKES! But more on that later.

Also, I'm usually the one behind the camera, so you won't be seeing much of me when it comes to the actual TR. Hey, I at least take TONS of pictures (like thousands!). And if you do see me, I doubt you will ever see my hair down since it's usually up on top of my head in the heat and humidity.
Like this...

...although, I may add a flower to make it ... well ... cute.

Hey, we live in Texas so heat is our norm, but we also approach it wisely and hair up like this is a great way to keep cool when not wearing a hat to keep my head from baking in the sun.

OK, enough about me (for now)...let's talk about the girls.

284299_10201120529723496_1246768217_n.jpg

The brunette is Kendall...she'll be turning 7 about a month before the trip...and the blonde is Sammie...who will be turning 5 a little over a month after the trip. This will be the girls' 4th trip to WDW.

The girls are total characters. Seriously. Kendall is a drama queen, but insists she's no diva (yeah right!). I could be really mean and post a video of a more recent meltdown, but I'll spare her. Sammie is our tomboy and quiet little trouble maker. Just recently, she tried to see how much toilet paper she could flush down each toilet in the house. Too bad I noticed we were suddenly down 6 rolls AFTER her experiment.

Next up...DH...

He likes, but does not love WDW. He's made it very clear that he's bored with trips to Disney. I told him I'd planned this trip for just me and the girls, but he was invited to come if he'd like. Well, when the first of two SWA fare sales hit, I cornered him on the matter and he agreed to go. Ultimately, I think he has fun and enjoys seeing the girls having such a good time and experiencing new things as they grow. So, I spent several months of having this trip booked not knowing if he'd be joining us... and if things go well job wise...he may still have to bow out. Soooo...really, who knows.

Beyond us...

We are actually being joined by 5...YES 5 ... more family members on day 3 of our trip. My parents will be joining us along with my brother's family. They all live in south Florida, so it's a fairly easy trip up for them. Well, assuming my brother & fam are still able to make it come trip time. They have a bunch of stuff going on and while they've booked lodging and all have orders in for discounted tickets through their employers (perks of living in FL), there's still a chance they'll back out. So, if DH has to stay home and if they back out...we could go from a party of 9 to a party of 5. Insanity I tell you!

When and Where...
Well, the when is fairly drama free...

Sept. 19 - 23

I just rebooked our air, so our arrival and departure changed, but I think it's for the best...since it saved us an additional $512. So instead of arriving at 11:45a, we're arriving around 2:50pm. I don't see that being a huge deal. On the flipside, we'll be getting a lot more time on our last day. I think our original flight had us leaving MCO around 2pm, but now we're leaving just after 7pm. So, more time with my family and more time to play on our last day.

So, that's the when, but the where is complicated...and still bugs me. :(

We were originally booked at the Contemporary...my fave. I was hoping fall discounts would mirror summer discounts so I could splurge on night 1 and stay in an MK facing room in the tower...then switch to the garden wing...but NO...the Sept discounts did not mirror the summer ones. On top of that, Mousesavers (via Small World Vacations) posted some incorrect info on the discounts for the Contemporary. They posted that MK view was 5% (which is correct) and standard rooms were 20% (which was incorrect). I put off calling by a day b/c I didn't know what to do. Overnight, I decided to switch to WL with a 30% off discount since it's a greater savings and it's DH's fave. The % never came up when I was on the phone with Disney that day, but I had to call about something else the next day and found out that the Contemporary discount was 30% for all non-MK facing rooms. Unfortunately, everything in the garden wing was gone and a full trip in the tower was more than I wanted to spend...sooooooo, WL it was. I did complain to Mousesavers and they corrected the problem, but I wonder if I would have gotten the room I wanted at the 30% discount if they'd posted the correct info.

So, now we're staing in WL. Most of our trip was geared for staying at the Contemporary, but WL isn't a huge transition. We'll be staying in a bunk bed room with a woods view. I figure at least it'll make it fun for the kids. I've also asked for 5th floor on the MK side.

Far from a good picture, but we had a nice view from our standard view room the last time we stayed at WL.

I know most people love WL and I shouldn't whine, but I really didn't care for the bedding on our last visit. The room also felt very cramped. Don't get me wrong, the resort is stunning...I just had some issues. Imagine that. I am also wondering how it will feel to have a non-holiday stay at WL. Last time we stayed there...we had a room over the lobby and this beauty greeted us every time we left our room.

5265579207_4f85628682.jpg

Still, we had a great time popping over for drinks at Trout Pass during our summer trip in 2011.... and clearly, there was no tree up at that point.

We are also going to try going stroller free this trip and should have less to bring clothing wise since it's a warm weather trip....so, hopefully that will help the room not feeling as cramped.

Honestly, the real lodging drama is the rest of the family. My parents and brother also lost out on the Contemporary discount, feel that 20% is too little for the Poly, and refuse to stay again at WL... so they're now staying at the Dolphin. Seriously---what's going on here!!!!????!!!! This is really putting a monkey wrench in all of our early morning plans. We'll manage, but not without certain people whining about it. I guess at least they got a really awesome AAA rate...like under $150/nt.

COMING UP...

Calling it a night, but coming up:
Dining
Cakes
Surprises - and to think I said I'd take a break from these
Special Goodies for the Girls
MNSSHP
The Tickets
The School Issues
...and a host of other things.

Thanks for reading :)

I am even anticipating your trip already, just from reading this pre-TR! Aaaand now...I'm hungry for cake!

I'm trying to distract myself with other things right now since the anticipation was hitting quite a high over the last week. Thankfully, I have a trip to New Orleans to plan...so, that's helping. Probably won't help with the cake hunger...but this is a test cake I made last week. Test cakes don't always get the full decorator treatment (hence this one), but it tasted good. Banana pound cake w/Ghirardelli chocolate cream and dark chocolate ganache. :D

Congrats on the big "four-ohh"! Welcome to the 40's club. Your plans look great as do your cakes!

Thanks Chris! Very excited about the cake plans :) Hey, and you're just a little over a month away from your trip to the Poly!!! Can't wait to see the report when you guys get back. :)

The cakes look awesome. Why was I so late in getting to this PTR?
Plans look great.

Thanks! Really hoping I don't get any resistance with the designs.

I did just kind of randomly start up the report. I'm not sure if it was hitting double digits, the airfare sale, or ordering the carryon cases...but I just said, "let's write a ptr!"

I am loving it can't wait for the official TR come September!!!

Thanks! Hoping to get lots of great pics for the official TR :)

OK...not exactly any kind of major update here, but I've been perusing new goodies for the girls. Long story short, I got an email from Disney the other day about offering FREE :D D23 memberships, so naturally I signed up. I was checking out some of the merch and saw this...

6804055940761

I would LOOOVE to have a pin that's Walt's badge, but a) don't know if I want either girl having a pin for their collections that's $24 b) don't know if the girls would appreciate this the way I do.

There were a handful of others under the D23 section that I really liked, like the Epcot 30th:
6804055940776

Donald as Aladdin
6804055940735

Hatter Costume Pin
6804055940755

Tron Donald
6804055940738

Pooh Donald
6804055940736

Sleeping Beauty Storybook Pin
6804055940775

But as great as these are...I think I'd be really upset if the girls took these on the trip and traded them away...kind of like when Kendall traded away her 2012 spinner pin last trip. Santa brought her a new one...which made her mad (since Sammie got a nice Zero pin to balance that out), but really- it just proves that I can't handle hand picking pins for them just to have them give them away.Still, thinking about one splurge pin per girl as a pin to "keep" and then buy another cheapo lot on ebay for them to trade. Santa did this for them back in December, in addition to the replacement spinner and zero...so, they already have a lot of pins that I'm Ok with them trading.

I did also see this Sleeping Beauty journal (my favorite of the books used to start out of the various movie of that type/era)...
6804055940780

...but I don't think either girl needs a $35 journal for their vacation. Probably not.

Beyond that...I saw that all of the dining plans are about to have a nasty price jump, which I suspect we'll see reflected soon in menu prices...just so that people can see the "value" in the plan. If prices for the meals jump as sharply as the plan price, I see us cutting some TS from our plans. Soooooo, I'm starting to think about what I'd cut. On the "potential" chopping block:

Artist Point (may flip back to Kona or GFC...may just go for QS)
1900 PF breakfast
Via Napoli lunch
Sci Fi snack
Kona breakfast
Raglan Road lunch

I can't say this is fully prompted by the DDP price changes. Whenever I start planning a vacay for someplace else- I start comparing prices. I've got sort of a Princess & the Frog anniversary trip planned for next month...and it's really got me rethinking the value of things. While it's really apples to oranges to look at the price of a nice breakfast at Brennan's compared to breakfast at Chef Mickey's...it still makes you think. The lodging was also an issue that got me thinking. I'll spare you the details, but I booked a room at the Omni in the middle of the French Quarter for what one might expect to pay at a WDW Value resort. Once again...apples to oranges, but it's got me thinking I might switch to a moderate resort before the current discount expires- assuming I can get a room.

POFQ only has a 5% discount, so that's not happening and I'm not a fan of what I've seen at CBR, but I'm sure the girls would LOVE a Royal Room at PORS and seeing @Pooh'sBuddy TR, CSR is looking pretty inviting. Don't know a darn thing about staying here...i.e. what building to request, if a water view is worth it, if a preferred room is worth it, etc...but I really like the room decor and the pool. Plus, I don't know if it's wise to stay in either New Orleans style WDW hotel after just staying in the middle of the actual French Quarter...even if it's oozing princessification. The only thing that worries me is the convenience factor...especially for our 7am breakfast at Chef Mickey's. Then again, with the savings...springing for a cab here and there would still put us ahead in the wallet dept. Plus, I'd really like to try someplace new. Also like to note that it probably won't happen though b/c the kids love the idea of the bunk bed and DH will be a happy camper at WL. Why do I torment myself like this?

Soooooooooo, that's where we're at this week.

How would you feel about getting yourself a couple pins? Just a thought. That's a really neat EPCOT pin and really cool hatter and Sleeping Beauty pins.

If I could talk the hubby into the drive to circumvent the airline expense, he already said he'd be happy in a value room. We only use the room to sleep, shower and change. As far as eating, unique and fab dinners are nice, but we'd be happy with CS meals, too.

Our choice of CSR was partially based on the good room only discount. CSR is really pretty. We'd stay there again and recommend it to anyone. I guess asking how much time would you spend there and what you would do would you do would be the way to start looking into a section. Here's Buzz's website if you want to read about it any further. http://coronado_springs.tripod.com/

We are so similar. It cracks me up. ;)

DH might disagree - snarky thing that he is, but I say that's a good thing! :D

That is a REALLY good idea! The strap on my Small World crossbody bag would work really well for pins...b/c I so deserve that Sleeping Beauty pin, among others. ;) Of course, I'll have to look at the budget since priority #1 treat for me is a Disney Dooney.

The beds are really what keep us from considering a value. If it were just me and the girls...I'd probably look to AoA and try out the Little Mermaid rooms, but it's just not an option if DH is with us. More CS meals would definitely save us some $ + there are some really great ones out there...I just worry about Kendall's allergies as well as the relaxation benefits we seems to get from TS.

Thanks for the website! I started to look it over and it certainly has a lot of info on room requests. We do spend a decent amount of time at our resort each trip, but the pool there seems pretty awesome. I'm going to think on it ... might even wait until we're back from NOLA before making the decision. Thanks again!

One or two nice pins would be lovely.

You're right. With a good discount, some of the moderates end up being not too much more than values. I forgot about the bed sizes. You're right. I don't think the hubby would be comfortable.

We haven't worried about food allergies, but from what I've seen, Disney seems to be really concerned about their guests. Would it be plausible to contact Guest Services in advance to speak with someone about them?

You're very welcome! Just sharin' the Disney love. :)

Big change today...I changed our lodging. Yes, I was thinking about CSR, but the girls seemed really interested in the bunk beds as I was involving them in my research and lies. I still wasn't feeling WL and I think staying someplace new might help with DH, so I switched us to a bunk bed room at AKL. It's a little bit of a savings...enough, that we could use some of that to pay for a cab on our Chef Mickey's morning and still come out ahead. I know a lot of people get free savannah upgrades at AKL, but not sure if I've killed those odds with a bunk bed room. They do offer bunk bed savannah view rooms...but that's much more than I want to spend...and I can handle it if we get the pool view we've booked.

(crazy...but I did this during my commute to work this morning...clearly it was on my mind all night ;))

This means I've also changed our first night meal. We've already done Boma, so the it was between Jiko and Sanaa. Both are very high on my "must try" list, but...
1. I think DH would prefer Sanaa for the budget
2. I think the kids would prefer the view at Sanaa
3. I think I would prefer to have an ADR that doesn't involve a CC guar on a travel day

The ADR is for 6:35p- a little later than I wanted, but I'm going to keep trying to upgrade it and if worse comes to worse...just show up early.
