Pre-Trip Lawdy, Lawdy, Look Who's Turning 40 - PTR

I was really tempted to call this the “What the heck are we doing?!?!!?-PTR,” but the reality…this trip is my 40th birthday present to me. Still, it’s one crazy convoluted mess, so at some point you’ll probably catch on to the reason behind the secondary title.

WHO...

Ok...enough about that...there will plenty of time to address the planning insanity.
If you're new to my reports, I'm Sandy...

9037036919_cff2edd2e5_n.jpg

I've been going to WDW since 1985 - even lived in Florida for a while. Soooooo, let's just say I've been to WDW a number of times. :D Beyond that, my 40th is about a month before this trip and this is my gift to me. I'd considered going on my actual 40th; however, I promised myself that our next trip would involve MNSSHP...so, September it is. And if you're familiar with the Cake Talk...I promise you....THERE WILL BE CAKE! In fact, there will be 2 CAKES! But more on that later.

Also, I'm usually the one behind the camera, so you won't be seeing much of me when it comes to the actual TR. Hey, I at least take TONS of pictures (like thousands!). And if you do see me, I doubt you will ever see my hair down since it's usually up on top of my head in the heat and humidity.
Like this...
9036986067_862e1be670_m.jpg

...although, I may add a flower to make it ... well ... cute.

Hey, we live in Texas so heat is our norm, but we also approach it wisely and hair up like this is a great way to keep cool when not wearing a hat to keep my head from baking in the sun.

OK, enough about me (for now)...let's talk about the girls.

284299_10201120529723496_1246768217_n.jpg

The brunette is Kendall...she'll be turning 7 about a month before the trip...and the blonde is Sammie...who will be turning 5 a little over a month after the trip. This will be the girls' 4th trip to WDW.

The girls are total characters. Seriously. Kendall is a drama queen, but insists she's no diva (yeah right!). I could be really mean and post a video of a more recent meltdown, but I'll spare her. Sammie is our tomboy and quiet little trouble maker. Just recently, she tried to see how much toilet paper she could flush down each toilet in the house. Too bad I noticed we were suddenly down 6 rolls AFTER her experiment.

Next up...DH...

He likes, but does not love WDW. He's made it very clear that he's bored with trips to Disney. I told him I'd planned this trip for just me and the girls, but he was invited to come if he'd like. Well, when the first of two SWA fare sales hit, I cornered him on the matter and he agreed to go. Ultimately, I think he has fun and enjoys seeing the girls having such a good time and experiencing new things as they grow. So, I spent several months of having this trip booked not knowing if he'd be joining us... and if things go well job wise...he may still have to bow out. Soooo...really, who knows.

Beyond us...

We are actually being joined by 5...YES 5 ... more family members on day 3 of our trip. My parents will be joining us along with my brother's family. They all live in south Florida, so it's a fairly easy trip up for them. Well, assuming my brother & fam are still able to make it come trip time. They have a bunch of stuff going on and while they've booked lodging and all have orders in for discounted tickets through their employers (perks of living in FL), there's still a chance they'll back out. So, if DH has to stay home and if they back out...we could go from a party of 9 to a party of 5. Insanity I tell you!

When and Where...
Well, the when is fairly drama free...

Sept. 19 - 23

I just rebooked our air, so our arrival and departure changed, but I think it's for the best...since it saved us an additional $512. So instead of arriving at 11:45a, we're arriving around 2:50pm. I don't see that being a huge deal. On the flipside, we'll be getting a lot more time on our last day. I think our original flight had us leaving MCO around 2pm, but now we're leaving just after 7pm. So, more time with my family and more time to play on our last day.

So, that's the when, but the where is complicated...and still bugs me. :(

We were originally booked at the Contemporary...my fave. I was hoping fall discounts would mirror summer discounts so I could splurge on night 1 and stay in an MK facing room in the tower...then switch to the garden wing...but NO...the Sept discounts did not mirror the summer ones. On top of that, Mousesavers (via Small World Vacations) posted some incorrect info on the discounts for the Contemporary. They posted that MK view was 5% (which is correct) and standard rooms were 20% (which was incorrect). I put off calling by a day b/c I didn't know what to do. Overnight, I decided to switch to WL with a 30% off discount since it's a greater savings and it's DH's fave. The % never came up when I was on the phone with Disney that day, but I had to call about something else the next day and found out that the Contemporary discount was 30% for all non-MK facing rooms. Unfortunately, everything in the garden wing was gone and a full trip in the tower was more than I wanted to spend...sooooooo, WL it was. I did complain to Mousesavers and they corrected the problem, but I wonder if I would have gotten the room I wanted at the 30% discount if they'd posted the correct info.

So, now we're staing in WL. Most of our trip was geared for staying at the Contemporary, but WL isn't a huge transition. We'll be staying in a bunk bed room with a woods view. I figure at least it'll make it fun for the kids. I've also asked for 5th floor on the MK side.

Far from a good picture, but we had a nice view from our standard view room the last time we stayed at WL.
5264648958_2f2ed4cf37_m.jpg

I know most people love WL and I shouldn't whine, but I really didn't care for the bedding on our last visit. The room also felt very cramped. Don't get me wrong, the resort is stunning...I just had some issues. Imagine that. I am also wondering how it will feel to have a non-holiday stay at WL. Last time we stayed there...we had a room over the lobby and this beauty greeted us every time we left our room.

5265579207_4f85628682.jpg

Still, we had a great time popping over for drinks at Trout Pass during our summer trip in 2011.... and clearly, there was no tree up at that point.

We are also going to try going stroller free this trip and should have less to bring clothing wise since it's a warm weather trip....so, hopefully that will help the room not feeling as cramped.

Honestly, the real lodging drama is the rest of the family. My parents and brother also lost out on the Contemporary discount, feel that 20% is too little for the Poly, and refuse to stay again at WL... so they're now staying at the Dolphin. Seriously---what's going on here!!!!????!!!! This is really putting a monkey wrench in all of our early morning plans. We'll manage, but not without certain people whining about it. I guess at least they got a really awesome AAA rate...like under $150/nt.

COMING UP...

Calling it a night, but coming up:
Dining
Cakes
Surprises - and to think I said I'd take a break from these
Special Goodies for the Girls
MNSSHP
The Tickets
The School Issues
...and a host of other things.

Thanks for reading :)

Isn't it always August-style weather in Disney?

My visits in Nov, Dec, and Jan have had their chilly to downright cold moments, but too much beyond that and I expect warm temps. I guess at least living in Houston is good conditioning for it. ;)

Honestly it isn't horrible in September. We only had one rain shower and we lucked out that we were in Mama Melrose at the time. Our only big issue was Cadence always gets head colds and sinus infections starting around the first of September. Poor thing did not feel great the entire trip. She puked from drainage three out of five nights. :( So this year she will be using her nasal sprays like she should and if I see the slightest sign before it will be off to the doctor we go.

Well, hopefully we'll get lucky and have mild temps this time around. That's awful about Cadence's sinus issues. Sammie had nightly reactions on our last trip...and a similar end result. I think she was allergic to something in the room because she'd be hacking in her sleep before getting sick and wound up covered in hives. I wound up having to give her allergy meds to combat it all. Hoping we don't have those problems this time around and hoping you guys are drainage free as well. :)

Being tricky...

Oh, the tangled web I'm weaving ;) I got this crazy idea to start playing the "Boo to You" music while I was sitting around with the girls. I then told them that a friend had recommended I added it to my Halloween mix. Well naturally, that led to Kendall wanting to see the parade where they use this music. Sooooo, we sat down and watched the whole parade. She's given me an ultimatum...our next trip MUST be during Halloween and she doesn't care if she has to miss things to see it in person. :D

They're also talking about rides on a daily basis...now if I could just get the girls to stop calling the yeti a yogi.

Sounds like mission accomplished! The song and WDW associated now.

Honestly I think the "Boo to You" parade is one of my favorites. Now if only the older kids had taken that nap that we offered they would have seen it in person and not on video when we got home.

That's a big part of why we're not doing anything else that day. I still want to get in a bit of rest/nap time before we head to dinner and the party, but they should still have a lot of energy to last into the party...I hope :)

Another minor- and unexpected update...

Soooo...we got home from camp/work the other day and Sammie suddenly wanted to put in her backpack "order" for the start of school. While it's not totally unexpected, she asked for a Pooh backpack. Now, I was going to use the Heys Pooh backpack as a smokescreen if they happened to have ?s about the large boxes that arrived with their Heys carryons...but since they were unmarked boxes, that all kind of fell by the wayside. But now that she was asking about a Pooh backpack, I had to tell her that I saw the most adorable Pooh pack. :D

So, this was the Heys Pooh pack...
mHk6D-hzrKHEctghRfUZlDA.jpg

First off...Sammie LOOOOOOOVED it! But I was tricky in how I showed it to her. I went onto ebay and typed in "Heys Pooh." So, naturally my search brought up pictures of the backpack as well as the carryon.

While she loved the backpack, her reaction to the carryon was one giant WOW! I had to explain to her that it's not a backpack and would be more useful for weekends at grandma's or to bring along on a plane. She asked if she could have it instead of the backpack, but I told her it was pretty expensive and not really as easy to use for school. So, the carryon is now on her birthday wishlist and potentially her Christmas/Hanukkah wishlist. :D So, now she's seen and really wants her carryon!

Kendall wanted a more traditional pack, but liked their fully softside princess one...
m4S6ZQWM4h5mTPA3HOrDMuQ.jpg

...and she did note that she'd love a princess carryon like the Pooh one. Sooooo, now both kids want carryons like the ones that will be part of their surprise. WOOHOO!!!! :D

Beyond that- just dealing with cake nerves. I have a cake for a client this weekend and I'm starting to get really nervous. As much as I love making cakes, I don't really enjoy this pressure. Still, I keep telling myself that the price of his cake will likely cover the full cost of my Disney cake. He's a really easy going guy...it's just the pressure I'm putting on me.

I think all of this pressure has me emotional about trip stuff. The girls were watching Hercules this morning and I started to tear up during the "Go the Distance" reprise. Mind you, this is the music in Wishes leading up to the fan effect of fireworks behind the castle...

...specifically, from about 0:35 to the end.

OK- 2 of 4 cakes still in the oven...tons of stuff to get ready for our trip out to the ranch today for the 4th...

HAVE A WONDERFUL AND SAFE 4TH EVERYONE!!!!

That is awesome! So cool. Your oldest is gonna start figuring you out. ;) You gotta record their reactions to the backpacks and carryons. No worries on the cake. You will be fine! Just normal stress and then awesome relief and happiness when you see the client loves it! I wish I would get somebody wanting me to make a cake or make them some shirts to pay for Cadence's bday cake. Who knows. Something may come up. Hope you guys have a great 4th! We have lits and lits of rain here and no sign of it letting up until next week.

It won't be long before she catches on and I will have to elevate my levels of deception. ;) Thanks! I just feel so far behind on the cake since yesterday was spent doing very little cake stuff. I had hoped to do some cake work before bed, but we got home around 11:30...we had some issues to deal with...and by 12:45a I was just ready for bed since I had to work today. The cakes are currently in the fridge so the filling can set. Then it's on to stacking, inner support rod, carving and frosting. I'll wait until the girls are in bed to break out the fondant.

I wish we would get some rain. I don't think we've seen any significant rainfall in over a month. At least the 4th was beautiful...and even my step-SIL kept her distance! Bonus! Hope you guys had a great 4th! :)

We had a nice one. Drove in flooding to my Mom and Dad's had some barbeque and visited for a few hours then came home and I got some sewing done on Cadence's autograph Disney Quilt blocks and then played on the computer after she went to bed early. Today was a nice relaxing day shopping and lunch with one of my best friends from college and Cadence so good start to the weekend. Tomorrow is lunch with the in laws so praying for patience. :)

Hoping you get some well deserved patience tomorrow! :)

On the 4th, we made it out to our friends' ranch around 2:30...swam for a little over an hour...had tons of TX brisket, chicken and all kinds of goodies...played softball...and then just mingled until the sun went down...then it was fireworks over the cleared portions of the cattle pasture. It was a great day, but we had drama on the way home and at home. I kept the girls so well hydrated that even a trip to the bathroom before leaving was just not enough. Sammie had her potty emergency in a parking lot (better than in my vehicle!)...where a security guard rolled up on us in a golf cart...it was ridiculous. And she had more potty issues at home. I guess at least they never got dehydrated. ;)

OK- time to work on fondant. Nervous...have to do a rolled on side drape. At least is looks like a basket. :D

You may want to keep an eye on Sammy for bladder infection. Cadence will do what you you described when she is starting one. Then she will start running a temp.

Can't wait to see the pixs of this cake! It is gonna be awesome. Have you had any changes of heart on your designs for your Disney cakes?

Thankfully, I'm pretty sure it's just the water. They went through a 24 pack of 8oz water bottles on Thursday.

I'm about to post the pic of the cake...mixed on it. I'm still pretty solid on my plans for the Disney cakes, but I'm debating about running my mini cake idea past Chef Brian as well as Pat...a) in case she's not receptive to my plans b) his pricing is vastly different from hers.

Soooooo, the client cake is done. I had major problems with the black fondant...there was much cursing and crying over cake last night...but, it's done and the client was very happy.

The good news...this cake should cover a good deal of the costs for my birthday cake at Disney. I now also can start working on final sketches for the Disney cakes with this out of the way. The client noted that another daughter has a bday next month, but this cake REALLY drained me + with my bday and Kendall's bday next month... just not sure if I'm up for it. So, who knows...maybe I'll have a cake sketch or two by the end of this week. :)

Awesome job! You are so hard on yourself. It is gorgeous and surprisingly just how I had pictured it. So wish you were close so you could do Cadence's cake and I could take it in dry ice down to Disney with us!

Thank you!!! :) I'm always going to be my toughest critic. I used black Satin Ice for the basket under-portion and I wound up having the issues I always seem to have with Satin Ice...excessive tearing and almost instant elephant skin. After a ton of traditional attempts, I cut out a bunch of diamonds and strips and did a very crude basket weave with it. Next time I need black, I'm going to try Fondx. I've heard great things and they offer free shipping if ordered via their website. I'm glad it at least looks like you envisioned it b/c DH and the client both thought it would be on its side. The only reason I would have done it on its side was if I'd wanted to make it with a backboard. Imagine if I still lived in FL...I could probably meet you there to deliver it!

Oh that would be even better! I experienced the same thing with Satin Ice Black. Was NOT impressed. And we are always our worst critics.

It's sad b/c I love the taste of Satin Ice, but I think I'm done. Fondx at least has 3 levels of fondant quality and offers black in each one...so I think that's next on the list of experimentation. Fondariffic also offers black, but it's way too sticky for our humidity levels here.

The good news, the client LOVED the cake. I got a message from his girlfriend this morning as well as an email from him. I got a pic of his daughter's reaction as well as a request for my Flickr link- since other party guests wanted to know who made the cake and see my other work.

On an unrelated note, got my walking sandals/flip flops for the trip yesterday...

I have a little over a week to get them New Orleans ready. After some walking in the French Quarter for a few days, they should be Disney parks ready. While the straps are different, the soles are identical to what I bought for our 2011 trip...so comfy + helped keep me cool :)

Super cute sandals! I will be wearing my trusty sneakers on the not so hot days and my crocs on the other days. I wear the croc ballet style and they feel like I have no shoes on all day long. :)

Thanks! And they were 20% off + I was able apply the last of those 30% off coupons to make them fairly cheap. I have never owned or even tried on a pair of Crocs, but my coworker started wearing the ballet style during pregnancy and they are her favorite work shoes. Funny you bring up sneakers...I bought these back in April and have been working to keep them fairly clean until WDW. Initially, I just wanted them to look like new but broken in sneakers for Disney, but I found out after having them a couple of days that they glow in the dark. Can't wait to have glowing feet for MSEP! :D

That is so cool that they glow! And too funny your friend at work started wearing them for work during pregnancy. My husband bought me my first pair when I was pregnant with Cadence and since then I can wear nothing else without my feet hurting. I still have the pair he bought and they look as good as they did when he brought them home. :)
