Larger than usual October Crowds

So you know how you hear "October is a great time to visit WDW because the summer crowds are gone and you can practically walk on most of the attractions?"

Not so fast, my friend!

I just spent most of yesterday at the Disney-MGM Studios where Rock n Roller Coaster and Tower of Terror had 25 to 60 minute waits in standby all day long, or at least from 9:00 until 5:30 p.m., when I departed to catch my flight. The Great Movie Ride was down until noon for some reason, and when it came online, it had a 45 minute wait the rest of the day. Star Tours had a 25 to 40 minute standby wait all day as well. By 1:30 p.m., the Sci-Fi Theater Restaurant was telling guests walking up that there were no more "car tables" available without a priority seating reservation for the rest of the operating hours.

I asked a couple of different retail cast members over the course of the day about the crowds and was told the last couple of October weekends have been unexpectedly busier than in past years. One reason given by a supervisor at the Tattoine Traders was a reported increase in European guests, particularly from England. Another lady in the upscale clothing store said she didn't know why, she was just grateful because it gave her some job security. Another reason given for Disney-MGM Studios being as busy on Saturdays this month was that Saturday is its early opening day for resort guests. Whatever the reason, the company has to be pleased with attendance there. The street crowd was lined up 4 deep for the 4:00 p.m. afternoon parade.

i was just there, it was packed. lines where insane, and we got into sci-fi for lunch @ 11 am so thats not bad. but the ride lines where crazy there was a 15 min wait for CoP which made me happy!

When I was there at the beginning of Oct. I also noticed a lot of guests from England. Does anyone know if this is when a lot of schools are out over there or any other reason for there being a large number of guests from England at WDW? Thanks!

15 minute wait?! You mean you had to wait at least two cycles for the Carousel of Progress before entering?

It was packed on Friday as well. I hink it may be in party to the extended hours of the park on Friday and Saturday (Till 11 PM). Normal close this time of year, not including event nights is 8 PM. Where I work, we had a ton of guests all day on Friday. It just didn'y stop.

Yes, I just returned yesterday, and I spoke with someone from Oxford. The schools are on a fall break. I was also told by a CM at our resort that the crowds were larger due to rescheduled trips. He said that just three weeks ago the place was a ghost town. I guess once everyone felt it was safe they all came flocking in. It was crazy! We were there eight days and never got to ride Test Track. All of the Fast Passes had been handed out everytime we tried to ride. Mission Space on the other hand only had a 5 minute wait the whole time we were there.

I think Disney needs to re-vamp there attendance stats. We left yesterday morning, and they were still pouring in.:brick:

The other thing that I believe factors in is that there are now school districts in the states that are giving a week of fall break in Oct. If this past week is an indicator of future trends I don't think I will be scheduling in Oct anymore except for MNSSHP-I guess I am just spoiled and prefer the parks a little quieter! :)

its because everyone from september rescheduled.
That makes sense. I know a few people who rescheduled because of hurricanes....either the ones hitting Orlando, or the ones where they live.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but my dad said on Tuesday, the day we were there, there were like 27,000 people there instead of the usual 10,000 for n October day. That day, they also added a second Fantasmic! and stayed open an extra hour and a half.

This weekend will also be very busy. The Funai Classic is being held at WDW on Thurs. - Sun., although there will be no Tiger this year.

So if you are planning on coming to Orlando this weekend, CALL NOW to book a room. If you wait, you may be out of luck like many people have been for the past two weeks.

My husband and I usually travel in Oct. and we have seen a big jump in the crowds for October through the past 5 years. Two years ago it was a mad house! We also went opening weekend of F&W. We almost got run over trying to get into FW when they opened the gates to WS. We were coming from the International Gateway, heading to the top of the park, when we heard some lady yelling at a CM because she thought we got to go into WS before everyone to get the ltd edition pins! :hammer: Get a life!! Anywho, we have now decided to travel in the beginning of Dec.. It may not be any better but we will see. Also someone remarked about the influx of Brits. Most of the country takes holiday in Oct. This is the only time my best friend can come home. She works in London. Crazy!!!

I think this is the trend for the past couple of years for October. We went to WDW in October of 2002...it was great. October of 2003 was very, very busy at all parks. So, we switched our October of this year to September to avoid those larger crowds. MNSSHP seems to be the reason along with the food and wine fest.

Good news for Disney, but I hope it doesn't carry over into mid November. We tried to schedule specificaly around crowds, so hopefully it works. But even if it does, sure is nice to see business up. More business means more money for the parks.

I too am thinking about venturing over to check out the food and wine festival on Saturday. I've never done it, and now that I go to school down here, why not take a break and see something I haven't? I completely forgot about the funai classic. Well, I guess I may have to fight some crowds this weekend.. :brick:
