Landscaping Downgrades at WDW

The funniest downgrade is the fake trees in Canada
We were told they were switched to fake trees on the mountain because OSHA rules made it incredibly difficult to be able to get people up there to maintain real ones. Though the fake ones they chose …. Were a choice. They do this have real ones above the theatre lobby that were recently refreshed as they are easier to access via backstage scaffolding.

Back in the early days of CBR, when you went during the Easter period, their flower beds around the promenade were replanted with white lillies. Lots of the flower beds have either disappeared or been replanted with shrubs.

I will give CBR credit- after their huge refurb, the islands of Martinique, Aruba, and Jamaica all received a new landscape package. Most everything was ripped out, re soiled, re sodded, and re planted. The mature palms stayed, and it was an awesome upgrade to what was there.

Blink, blink. Breathe, breathe. Day in, day out.

This, though... And that new rock work too. Blah.

I remember going behind the Canada pavilion during a New York Film Academy camp when I was in high school, and it was cool to see that they were cargo truck beds in the back that the trees were in.

Here’s some current landscaping at port orleans. But remember, there have been no downgrades ;)
What you are showing here are lilies of the Nile. They are a beautiful flowering perennial that I’m sure you love in the spring and summer when they bloom large blue/purple flowers. What you are seeing is their natural cycle with a little maintenance to dry out the soil and encourage new growth so that after the winter they will once again fill that planter with beautiful color in the spring and summer. So no, what you have photographed is not a landscaping downgrade. It’s an annual occurrence in several locations around Walt Disney World.
Here’s a photo from
Boardwalk of what they will look like in a few months.

There have absolutely been some landscaping downgrades since Covid. The planters in the Tomorrowland/Fantasyland corridor, the entrance road to the Contemporary, the floral perimeters around the Grand Floridian out buildings….and more. There are some others that were cut back and have slowly started to reappear such as some planters at Y&B and even the Fantasia Gardens marquee. Much of this is the result of labor shortages, some self inflicted. But the things you keep mentioning and photographing are standard seasonal changes and landscape maintenance.

Here’s an example - these are flower beds not bush beds!!! Lol

Some people may like the bushes better
Coleus are not bushes they're flowers; and are a perfect plant for the summer because they're very heat tolerant and require less care than the more exuberant flowers you see in the spring. It would help your cause (which I agreed with one page one) if you were actually informed about gardening .

Smart move, an on the job injury falling from height , hospital, therapy rehab can run into 6 figures or more than $1M.

I never claimed to be an expert on gardening… I’m a railfan, not a garden fan! But I do notice things.

I’m also not from California, I’m from a very red southern state that is much closer to Florida. I just enjoy Disneyland more right now although I did have a great time at the world as well on my recent trip!

Both have their merits and are different experiences to me. DL can be a bit crowded especially on weekends.
If you want the best and most complete Disney park experience Disneyland wins hands down. More attractions, more characters roaming around, more flowers. more live entertainment, and the charm that only Disneyland can provide.

But if you want a resort experience with better food / restaurants, more themed bars, highly themed resorts to explore and relax at, and lots of unique transportation connecting it all, plus an abundance of wildlife to see, WDW offers a great experience plus they have theme parks too. Haha.

Here’s a great example of the food and wine entrance planter then vs. now. (Photos are not mine, from google searches).

Well......The resort theming is being removed bit by bit, the park food at Disneyland is actually better than what we have here, Buses mostly with some monorail and skyliner connectivity... VS just monorail...Yes more wildlife in Florida, but Disneyland has a certain special something...Maybe it is the scale ...the care and details... But it really feels nicer than what they are doing in Florida... Just smaller.

I disagree with that, although it depends on specific comparisons.

MK Resort boats, Friendship Boats, Disney Springs Resort Boats, 2 monorail lines, 3 skyliner lines. You can spend lots of time just riding the transportation around.
Maybe it is the scale ...the care and details... But it really feels nicer than what they are doing in Florida... Just smaller.
oh I agree - Disneyland is the winner in my book as well but I did really enjoy my recent visit to WDW as well. But not for the parks as much as the resort experience as a whole. I mostly resort hopped the whole time.

Your first photo is from 2011 when the festival started on September 30. The second photo was from this year when the festival started on July 27. The festival starting two months earlier in the height of summer affects landscape design planning.

It’s a shame flowers don’t grow in the summer.

Where did I ever say flowers don’t grow in summer?

I know you’re not familiar with or a fan of coleus but they are a popular ornamental flowing plant that are perfect for the summer and fall. Which is why they have been used seasonally at WDW for decades.

Like this photo from 2009 where the festival entrance display made extensive use of coleus. Or another even older photo of the planter filled with coleus.
