Key West

Okay, so my vaca is coming up...and although I'm going to Florida...Disney will not make it into the trip.

In a few weeks I'm heading down to Key West and I've never been there...so...I was wondering if anybody had any suggestions of hotspots and must-sees and must-dos...also...should I avoid anything?

(And by looking at the upcoming temps...it seems like all of Key West is a "hot" spot!)

Thanks in advance!

Hi! I love Key West!
Can't think of anything you should avoid!
If you're a party person, night time is definitely the right time.
Duval Street is one big party all night long.
Sunset Celebration, a nightly event at Mallory Square (at the very end of Duval Street) is so much fun. Gorgeous sunsets and tons of street performers.
There's so, so much more.
Check out some websites.
And have a great time!

EDIT: I made a correction. It is Duval Street.

There are certain sections of the island that the locals advise avoiding. Ask one the the employees where you are staying. Don't miss the sunset at the pier, the lighthouse, Hemmingway's house, and all the great night spots. And watch out for the cats - they are everywhere and they all have extra toes.

Yeah, it seems like a blast...I'm definitely a "semi-partier" (I don't party all the time...but on occassion I really look forward to it).

We're staying at the Casa Marina...have ya heard anything about it?

No, but I just googled it and it looks awesome!
In all, Key West is not all that big, so you're not too far away from anything, no matter where you're staying!
Hemmingway House is great and the cats are the coolest!
There are some seedier areas, but even those are pretty interesting.
When we were there, roosters were everywhere on the streets, but the locals were campaigning to get them under control. Don't know how that turned out!
The marina area is gorgeous!
Word of advice from my husband . . . if you rent a scooter, wear a helmet!
He found that out the hard way when he wound up in the ER!
Live and learn!

Hmmm...so we have roosters and cats...

They must've left that out of the brochure...

But, again...how nice would the brochure be if it said:

KEY WEST - "Our streets are packed with C____ and P______!"

Silly thing, but you've got to do it: Watch the sun set into the Atlantic down at the big gathering spot - everybody gathers, watches, waits, waits, and then . . . it plops into the water and there is much rejoicing. While you wait, all sorts of odd characters will mingle along - jugglers, fire swallowers,

Duval Street - just check it out.

Sloppy Joe's - touristy biker bar/claims to be where Hemingway hung out. There is another place down there that claims to be the "real place." I dunno.

Try and line up a half day bonefishing trip - you won't regret it. stealth is required.

Try and find Jimmy Buffett's secret recording studio. :lookaroun

Too funny!

If I recall correctly, the cats were confined to the Hemingway House property. Hemingway had a bunch of 6-toed cats while he lived there and the cats that currently reside there are direct descendants of those cats.

The roosters were sort of cool. Just roaming the streets and begging at tables at outdoor eating places. I was there in 2002, I think, and at the time there was legislation in the works to deal with the roosters. You'll have to let me know how that turned out!

Hey, I just got back from Key West two weeks ago! The chickens are still everywhere--the city hired a Chicken Wrangler a while back, which failed miserably. So they still have free reign. Just be careful when yer walking/driving around though, 'cause they do have a tendency to wander onto the sidewalks, streets, etc. Also, there's a place caled The Chicken Store on Duval that acts as a chicken refuge and human gift shop. If you ever wanted to find anything that says "I love Coc_s", that's your best bet.

If you have a chance, do the Original Ghost Tour (http://www.hauntedtours.com, if you're into that kind of thing). I've been on it thrice, and it's always really fun and entertaining.

Capt. Tony's bar is located where the original Sloppy Joe's bar once stood (if that makes sense), and is a great place to play pool and look at the multitude of crap thumbtacked to the walls.

There's a three story building that houses the Bull bar (1st), the Whistle Bar (2nd), and the Garden of Eden (rooftop). Be aware: The Garden of Eden is CLOTHING OPTIONAL. Yeah. See, we didn't know that the first time we walked up the stairs to look at the city at night. There's nothing quite like being unexpectedly greeted by buck naked Ernest Hemingway lookalikes (ahem, plural) resting themselves on leather barstools. I still scream at night sometimes.

Let's see, what else? Oh yeah, park your car somewhere and LEAVE IT. Parking sucks, and can be expensive. So try to park your car somewhere safe (off the main roads like Duval and Truman) and either walk or rent a bicylcle/moped. You shouldn't need to drive anyway, since it's a small island.

Have fun!

Still chickens everywhere! Oh well!
We stayed at the Southernmost Hotel, right near the chicken store. Those roosters could crow!

Gee, sorry I missed the naked Hemingways! :lookaroun

Mel Fisher's Maritime Museum is at one end of Mallory Square. I've still got my "I lifted a Gold Bar!" Sticker. The sunken treasure in the gift shop is to die for.

There's a neat cemetary for the history buffs - the soldiers of the Maine are buried there (As in "Remember the Maine!")

Some other stuff - Houseboat Row, Eat lots of Key Lime Pie, Watch the cruise ships dock and sail away, The southernmost point in the US...

Have fun!

Best Key Lime Pie, ever, of course!
The cemetary is really cool and the cruise ships are amazing, if only for their size!!!!
Everything you mentioned here is a must see!

Am I the only one who finds Key West absolutely boring?

Yes? :lookaroun

Ok seriously...I've been there several times in my lifetime, and it's not a must-see for me. But if I were to advise on fun places, I think the others have done a pretty good job of it (like Duval Street, Sloppy Joe's, Hemmingway's house). So...have fun :D

Of course you have to find that sign or marker (I forget) that tells you you're 90 miles away from Cuba :lookaroun :p

I was born in Key West. Have been back quite a few times to visit and find it just as beautiful each time. I'm definately a warm weather beach girl.

Key West is only 3 miles wide so you definately don't need a car to get around. Hopefully you are driving down - that way you can take in the sights.

The six-toed cats in Hemmingway's house are Maine Cats.

Have fun and drink a margarita or two for me!!!!:sohappy:

Wow! What an amazing place to call home!
Glad to know you still think it's beautiful!
I fell in love with it and look forward to visiting again!

Put it this way...there won't be a drink in my hand that doesn't have a little umbrella in it to shade it from the sun

So...I'll say, "This one's for Gucci" and swig it back :)

I can't wait...
