Kali River Rapids in deplorable condition

honest opinion time? demolish it and out something worthwhile there.

Honestly I agree... Love the idea of a rapids ride... and rapid's rides in general but this one is so short and thrilless and the subpar theming does not make up for this.... I honestly much prefer the unthemed rapid's ride at our local amusement park I'm pretty sure it's longer and just much more fun.. Popeyes and Kali aren't even in the same arena... Popeye's is a ton of fun and very well themed probably the best rapid's ride I've ever been on ... you do get DRENCHED but I don't mind that if I'm riding a water ride lol.

If they could add another 3-4 mintes of ride and some more actual rapids or hills and turn up the theming I would def give it another chance, but the ride as it is now... It can go... I wouldn't be sad at all if they demoed it to build something more immersive/exciting.

Animal Kingdom in general was never made cheaply...It is arguably the best theme work of any of the Disney theme parks... They came up short on attractions...then tried to shoehorn in Chester and Hester...also extremely well done for what they were trying to do, but not everyone gets the theme...nor particularly does the theme work within the context of the rest of the park....Kali was put in as a knee jerk reaction to not having enough rides...Unfortunately they never really fleshed out the ride experience...Kind of like the rapids ride at DCA... Animal Kingdom really just needs more... More attractions, More engaging things, maybe some park transportation to move guests around....Just more...
But I would never say that the park was just cheap.

Really want to thank you for responding to that post. I was really gearing up for something inappropriate but that is not my style so I refrained. My guess is that if people really understood the cost of feeding and managing the animals, as well as creating and maintaining healthy habitats, along with what is most likely costly medical facilities, it would become pretty apparent that there is nothing 'cheap' about this park whatsoever. All in all, it is a totally different endeavor entirely. This park has an expense to it that other parks - aside from Sea World - don't even have to worry about.

And really, it is a beautiful park... The Roadside America/Dinoland is also really well done, but I think most people don't understand the theme, and after the immersive beautiful theme work in the rest of the park, this area doesn't quite work...Biggest problem is the lack of attractions ie: rides...Glad to see this park is getting some attention...
And remember...it still has more rides than Hollywood Studios...lol

Since Epcot is all but a shell of its former self, DAK is definitely my favorite park to just kill time in. I always wish for one more nature trail because they do those so incredibly well, I mean no one comes close to how good those are. I hope it goes more earthly love beyond the Pandora expansion. No princesses please though.

Underfunded given the scope of the project would be a better way of putting it.
Considering that one of the most popular things at opening (Festival of the Lion King) cost $250K I'd say that they got very lucky with how well the park turned out considering how little they spent on it.

That is my fear...we will see the Kusufari Princess Trek and Character Meal in Harambee Village...or a Frozen Serengetti Dance Party featuring Olaf....

A gorgeous park with some clearly caring and extremely talented imagineers (I don't blame them for what occurred), unfortunately as Martin said though underfunded. It was built around the beginnings of the budget cut extravaganza initiated during the latter half of Eisner's regime. I'm sure this hurt the park, and i'm guessing that had it been built earlier in the 90's that it might not have received as serious budget cuts. I really do love the park and most of it is gorgeous and amazing to be in, but to imagine what it could have been with a few extra hundred million.

Demo-ing Kali in favor of something more like Tiger River would be an excellent step to further fixing the park's issues. That huge clearing of land above it is just begging for use. I'm guessing it would add a lot of capacity to the park as well, and of course the possibility of a lengthier and superior ride would spread crowds out better. From Martin's overhead concept map, it also looks like certain areas within the footprint of the ride had walkways, so it's possible that you could walk around the areas the ride visited without even riding it.

I'll also mention about the soaking factor, I like a water ride that feels more controlled in how it gets guests wet. On Splash Mountain for instance, you can somewhat adjust how wet you get depending on the seat you choose (except for the backsplash one gets while going around the first curve around the big drop). I've discovered that the closest to the front row you sit, the better the chance you'll get wet. Further back though the chance of getting wet are lessened (on the back row i've even disembarked relatively bone dry sans some minor and pleasant misting). I'm guessing the same is now true of Pirates (though it was never a ride that used to get one wet at all until the new problematic boats were implemented). Kali however has no such luck, the boats are always spinning so that everyone gets wet, but at least one half of the boat are guaranteed to get absolutely drenched. It would be nice to have a raft ride that was possible to better control your soaking options depending on the mood you're in, something that doesn't spin would be great. As it stands, i'd rather have a ride where show scenes (or in Tiger River's case, elaborately detailed animal exhibits) were the main attraction, not one that is proud of letting you walk around in squishy shoes for the rest of the day.

I am also fully understand the theme they were going for with Dinorama, it doesn't make it any less cheap and a horrible blight on the otherwise gorgeous park. It's awful, I have a full understanding of what they were trying to go for and it's still awful. Why anyone would consider an ugly gross and tacky looking roadside carnival would be a suitable fit for any of their parks is truly baffling to me. And before anyone makes the attempt, there's no use arguing with my opinion if you actually like it, i'm completely aware of their reasoning and "story" behind its creation. Just because some minor thought was put into an idea does not make it a good idea. I don't think people complain about the area because of a lack of understanding on what they were trying to do. It's still just a horrible idea, especially for a Disney park and especially for one as gorgeous as AK. Dinorama takes up a healthy plot of land, gutting the area entirely in favor of a more suitable prehistoric animal ride would be a huge step forward for the area and park as a whole.

I agree...Chester and Hester has always felt like a placeholder for something better on the horizon....that never came. I was thinking 2 to three years... ha ha...More than a decade later it is still there. Maybe if they had built The Excavator as planned...but seriously the tacky carnival games...just a mis-step.

I have ridden it once. We're not allowed to speak of it in my house after that one experience.

It was on our honeymoon. The wife and I made it the first ride of the day. As we boarded, Mindy asked me where to sit to stay dry. Not knowing anything about the ride, I suggested sitting in whichever seat appeared to be driest. I quickly realized that wasn't going to work because the boats spin. So who gets wet is completely random.

Of course Mindy ended up being the one person who got completely soaked. I got a little spray off of her. Everyone else was dry as a bone. She looked like she had been drowned. People were pointing at her and laughing. As we exited the ride, we got the same reaction. She was miserable. We ended up heading right back to the bus to go back to AKL and dry off.

Bad ride. But at least I got a funny story out of it.

Off topic, but I wanted to tell a funny story about my honeymoon at WDW.

So, 10 long years ago, during only the second day of my marriage, BJ and I are sitting down along the lake at Epcot to avoid the hot August sun. As I sit nearby my blushing young bride a large red ant or carpenter ant falls on her head. Instead of saying something to her about it, or calmly removing it, I instinctively slapped her across the side of the head to kill the ant. I don't know what I was thinking. I think she mostly believes me that there was an ant there, but in 10 years she has never let me live it down, and I would be surprised if she lets me forget in the next 10.

Don't expect the fire to ever work again, FYI. Not while they have a cast member sitting up there watching guests to make sure they don't stand up. The heat would make them drop like flies. Even without the fire, it's already a million degrees up there. With it, heat stroke would be a very real possibility.
(As far as I'm aware, there IS still a CM there, correct?)

I heard that they intend to turn it into the AK version of Jungle Cruise. They're going to have a CM accompany guests in each raft. The CM will then tell corny jokes. As I'm sure you know, when Jungle Cruise first opened (back in Walt's day) the ride was serious and was run very much like a "True Life Adventure". It was about 1962 when the Jungle Cruise changed and the skippers started to tell some jokes. After Walt's death in 1966 the jokes on the Jungle Cruise became much more prolific.

It wasn't fire on both sides though was it? I thought there was only fire on the side with the truck. Wouldn't it be possible to put a CM on the other side?

On my recent visit several weeks ago, I used wisdom gained from experience -- I avoided it. In December, I had planned to hop directly to HS for the Osborne Lights. I didn't have a poncho. I rode KRR anyway and got soaked. I was miserable. Had to leave early and ride the bus back to the resort in cold wet clothes for a hot shower and a change of clothes before hopping to HS.

This time, I avoided it entirely so I could spend more time in AK before hopping to Epcot for the Illuminations Dessert Party. Was not going to take a chance on KRR, even with a poncho.
