Great timing!!! I've been summoned for jury duty. Only problem is that it is around finals time for school. UGH!!!!!!!!!! Now I have to talk to all my instructors to see if something can be done if I am selected. WHY NOW??????

The court should let you out of it if you tell them you are a college student. I called ahead of time and they said 'OK'. No other questions were asked.

Just call the clerk and asked to be excused because of finals. They usually will honor your request & postpone you jury duty for awhile.

Hmph. Don't mess around with finals.

Or the state.

Do not ignore your summons for jury duty. Last time I was on the judge issued warrents for the 18 people who didn't bother to show up. Call now!

I've never been summoned... I guess I don't seem like a very good juror...

oh well... I'm not really all that upset about it... ;)

Are you a registered voter?

It wasn't until 10 years after I registered that I was called. In all that time I've only been called 4 times & have been excused 3 of them. This last time I had to report, but I was dismissed.

If you volunteer to work elections, this will exempt you from jury duty because you will have fulfilled your civic obligations. Working elections is fun, but long. It's a neat process to watch--and you get paid for it!

Is that everywhere? Because Lenny worked the Polls for many years & he still got called, he was always excused though due to his job. (those exemptions are gone now)
He hasn't been called in years though.

Last yeaer I was called at a time which was inconvenient, as we were short-handed at work due to someone being on maternity leave. I emailed them and asked to be re-scheduled after 4 months; they re-scheduled me 3 months later. :brick: However, when I wrote again to protest they postponed it another 3 months.

So, they do seem to be willing to accomodate you if your request is within reason. As long as they don't sense that you are trying to get out of going altogether, you should be able to get a new date without a problem.

It's that way here. Must not be a federal law/courtesy/whatever.

First and only time I was summoned we sat in the jury pool room most of the day and was excused alittle after 3 pm. Even though I didn't get to be part of a jury, I felt good that I fulfilled my civil obligation.

If I remember correctly, there's a form with your summons that you can fill out immediately & send right back, asking to be excused. You give them the reason, and they will honor your request. I've never heard of them NOT honoring someones request, when it is legitimate... as are your finals!!

My wife has been called 3 times now. I have never been called. I've been a registered voter since I turned 18, and I'm now 27, I've just been lucky enough to not get called. Of course, watch me receive something on Saturday telling me that I've been called when I am moving to Orlando on Sunday...

Lets see I was called the first time when I was in Florida so I was not able to go. Then I got summoned again and told them o hey i am in school sorry. They should excuse you, if not thats crazy.

In Connecticut, the summons contains an option to postpone your service for up to one year. You simply fill out an alternate date, send it back to them, and they tell you if that's acceptable.
