"As we shared earlier this year, we are building on the original story of the Jungle Cruise at Disneyland park and Magic Kingdom Park. We’re adding more humor, wildlife and skipper heart to the classic attraction, and as part of a much larger effort, this updated experience will welcome new characters from around the world.

The enhancements include several new scenes guests will experience along the river, all interconnected. Our world-famous skippers will continue to share the unique adventure and interactions guests expect on the Jungle Cruise.

The new scenes will heighten our skippers’ legendary comedic tone, beginning with a trapped safari party that finds itself up a tree after their journey goes awry. Unexpected scenarios along the way will give the jungle and animals the last laugh!

For those looking to dive deeper, we’re also expanding the attraction’s backstory, centered around Alberta Falls, granddaughter of world-renowned Dr. Albert Falls, as the proprietor of the Jungle Navigation Company Ltd.

Jungle Cruise fans might be familiar with her name; however, wouldn’t you know it, we recently uncovered a copy of an interview with Alberta Falls that was featured in a 1938 issue of The Daily Gnus about her and the World-Famous Jungle Cruise. We hope you’ll enjoy getting to know her!

1938 issue of The Daily Gnus

Stay tuned for more details coming later this year!"

yuck. jungle cruise is not Lord of the Rings. It does not need some sweeping, epic, back story. it needs no backstory at all. God modern Imagineering have nooo imagination or subtlety.

They're building and maintaining a fandom. You can just enjoy the robot animals if you want, but some of us like the idea of backstories!

In fact, I think a proper backstory will keep the theming of the ride coherent and consistent–something its not had thus far in its long life.

This ride has not needed a backstory since 1955 so tell me another one.

You mean back when the general population had never seen a robot before and some guests apparently used to mistake the AA animals for the real thing?

And yes, the Jungle Cruise has always had a backstory:

You get on the ride and go on a tour. its never had a backstory because it never needed one or was designed to have one. its a river tour. there is no pre-show so you understand the story or anything like that. its more you can make up your own backstory if you need to. but nothing set in stone. so please.

Have you ever been on the Jungle Cruise? The backstory is told through the queue (which has become more elaborate over time). If you watch the video I posted, which is an interview with an original Jungle Cruise skipper, he explains the elements of the backstory.

"Schweitzer Falls, named after Dr. Schweitzer, who did wonderful humanitarian work in Africa."

"We now enter the Zambezi River, which flows through south-central Africa..."

It wasn't a fantastical story, it was realistic (and, from the sound of it, quite boring) but it was the background that explained what was happening.

To an extent, I think it's safe to say everything at Disneyland has a "backstory". The difference is, instead of letting the guests figure things out for themselves, modern WDI likes to blatanty shove them in our faces before we board, lest anyone get "confused".

If the design and execution are top-notch (HM, POTC, JC) then you don't really need a backstory. It shouldn't be confusing except for where it's obvious things really don't "fit" like GOTG.

That's not a backstory its tidbits on the tour by the skipper to give context to certain things. the queue is not a set in stone backstory. its artifacts and trinkits you can form your own backstory if you need one, its not spelled out for you like this update is trying to do. so again...tell me another one.

Maybe you could come back when you understand the concept of a backstory.

A backstory may be elaborate or simple, stated or implied, realistic or fantastical. The new S.E.A. backstory is more elaborate, in-depth, childish, and maybe even overly detailed, but it's all part of Disney's approach to fostering a fandom and interconnecting the rides.

Also, it's a big commercial for the upcoming S.E.A. series on Disney+.

Maybe you could come back when you realize there is no backstory needed for classic rides like Jungle Cruise, Pirates of the Caribbean and The Haunted Mansion.

LOL without backstories, the attractions would make no sense!

Guests go from a theme park in 2021 to a 1930s river tour jungle outpost (oops, that's backstory) boat dock in a fake river with fake animals...? That's the Jungle Cruise without a backstory. The "Skipper" is your tour guide (backstory) ride operator tells random jokes while the fake boat rides a rail through the man-made canal... fun!

And regardless of whether or not you know the backstory, backstories were created for the development of these attractions. That's how they maintained consistent theming and storytelling throughout the ride.

Jungle Cruise, Pirates and Mansion have been doing just fine and as popular as ever for decades without backstories LOL
