Jungle Cruise Update

Because I’ve participated I now feel like I should go on record stating my opinion that the changes they’ve announced are fine but adding a quality thrilling Black Panther attraction (plus Soul, Coco, Moana, etc.) still needs to be prioritized. Add stuff with non-white characters for everyone to love together and bond over. Humans need each other as allies and friends, not opposing teams. Storytelling, music, really all art, can bring us together in a way nothing else does. It’s medicine. It’s what Disney parks are about to me— looking around at all the faces of every type of family/guest smiling together at the same things. It’s the same reason I love theater—shared experience connects us.

That's manifesting itself into these arguments that the Jungle Cruise (or anything really at Disneyland) is untouchable, because it's always been there and it's always been like this. I think they're falling into the typical trap of, I like this thing, and I'm not racist, so it can't be racist itself.

So I want to believe that a lot of the arguments against these changes aren't coming from a place of actual racism and hatred, but just a place that is against change. An anger against progress that is usually reserved for changes like adding Starbucks to Main Street, but this time they are unaware at how those arguments against are hurting others in the community.

I totally agree, there's some lack of maturity from some corners and I don't actually believe they mean what they are saying here. Or understand the nuance of it.

Albeit there is an even smaller minority of that minority that are bad actors that do not actually care about the changes. Unfortunately, they are the loudest and are also trying to stir up the change adverse to their cause. I think we can easily see who those players are.

Whatever label you want to prescribe to them; some people are capable of acting like good people but let their true colours come out when they are anonymous. Bad people can be charming.

It's interesting too because while the Jungle Cruise is iconic, I don't know that ANYONE truly believes it is an unimpeachable masterpiece that is operating (or has operated for some time) as a pinnacle park experience, where everything fires on all cylinders to really WOW people consistently in the way that people ascribe to Pirates, Mansion, Splash, etc. among others.

Many, and undoubtedly many of the loudest voices, have long since moved Jungle Cruise to 'courtesy ride' status: not an attraction you actually feel that strongly about, but it's there, the wait's not too bad, and you need to fill your time with something, so why not? Only for the entire experience to leave one's mind immediately after exiting the ride vehicle.

If they were honest, this is the most they've thought about or talked about Jungle Cruise in YEARS. Likely decades.

But they gotta feed their desire for DRAMA! and ATTENTION! because lord knows they don't get enough of it.

Really? You honestly believe they don't?

There is no question for me that they fully understand. How could they not when it's been explained to them over and over just IN THIS ONE THREAD alone? These are adult Americans who are pretending to know nothing about the nuances of white supremacy in our culture today unabashedly amplifying it. There's one poster here who continually mocks my posts with haha similes. I'm sorry but at this point I gotta call a spade a spade.

The more immature ones, I think there are a couple children participating here. I'm sure they can turn into terrible adults in due course.

The grown adults? Don't worry, I called a spade a spade here earlier this year and now I am pretty confident it was the right judgement call. I'm very disgusted - and I am not just "saying that" because it is apparently what some white people do.

There is an old expression concerning ducks, their appearance, and their vocalizations that comes to mind here.

This is why I said you are too sensitive. That comment really got in your head. I am starting to wonder if your account is a Kevin Durant burner account.
I was calling you out for your hypocrisy, as you are sensitive and tend to be just over the top in general. DISNEYLAND IS THE BEST, THE OTHERS DON’T MATTER, IT’S NOT AN OPINION BUT A FACT. I thought that was obvious, but I guess not.

I spent a few posts poking fun at you. That comment did not “get in my head” lol. As I said in that comment, I’m done trolling.

Not only will sarcastically “laugh” at posts, but when called out for it, won’t actually contribute anything of value to discussion. A complete waste of time.

People don't want to admit they need to take a good, hard look at themselves and the world. Which means they can't admit there are issues with one of their favorite places. I grew up going to school that had a lot of international students, a significant chunk of which were not white. Some were my friends. But if you look at what I read, they were almost all white authors writing about white people*. That's pretty awful.

* The only exception I can think of is reading about Harriet Tubman, more because she was a **female** we learned about in school than because she was black.

Disneyland is the best park in my opinion. I showed no hypocrisy in this thread. I have expressed my distaste in changing a classic attraction in my point of view for no good reason and talked about how I would hate for them to remove an iconic element that is been there since Haunted Mansion's opening day. I also expressed how I disagree with your point of view about the quote un-quote "racism" you feel are in Jungle Cruise and Splash Mountain and how thinking there is racism in those rides is over the top and silly when they are theme park rides.

Whew the cognitive dissonance. Just because you don't want to see the racism, or more specifically white supremacy, in the context of Disneyland rides or popular culture in general doesn't mean it isn't there. Racial inequality is foundational to American society, and commenting on its persistent presence, even in a beloved theme park, is anything but silly.

Again I disagree with your theory there is "racism" in the rides at all. It's not that I "don't see it". you guys keep saying that as if you guys have such a higher understanding than the rest of us, but what you don't comprehend or are refusing to comprehend is we DO get what you are saying and just flat out disagree. Just because I have a differing view does not mean I "need to do research" etc. You are not more "enlightened" socially than the rest of us. I disagree with your take. Simple as that. And you won't convince me of your point of view otherwise.

So now it’s an opinion. Okay. And you did show hypocrisy, just a few posts after you responded with that message.

I never once said there was racism in Jungle Cruise of Splash Mountain. Not once. You are either making that up or confusing me with someone else. Or you’re assuming that just because I can acknowledge the bigger picture, such as the racist aspects of Song of the South or the lack of healthy representation of black culture in society, specifically Disneyland, that I must find both Jungle Cruise and Splash Mountain racist and therefore problematic. I’ve said this multiple times, but you you’re not truly understanding what I, @Dr. Hans Reinhardt, @PiratesMansion, and so many others are saying. AGAIN, for the upteenth time, if the natives stay in Jungle Cruise, fine. If they don’t stay, fine. In the Splash threads, I specifically said I don’t support the ride’s removal but it suffers from its connection to Song of the South.

The circles we have to go in...

it has always been my opinion. You have told me many times people would leave Splash Mountain feeling non inclusive due to the ride's racism. You have said you have seen it first hand and I called you out saying no you have not. That no one has ever walked off that ride not smiling.
