How did we go from talking about meeting Joe Rohde to bashing AK for not fixing the effects in EE? Isn't there a thead for that already? The effects are broke they will fix them when they have a solution to the problem end of story.

...But didn't E:E open a year late? In 2006? I thought it was supposed to open with the rest of the HCOE Offerings in 2005.

I think they roped it into the HCOE Offerings but I don't think when announced originally it was intended to be part of it. It just kind of happened that way.

That being said, I have a Happiest Celebration on Earth plastic sign advertising Expedition Everest.

Back on track: I saw Michael Eisner once in Magic Kingdom. Remember way back in the 80's when Disney had the Sunday show (can't remember the name... Wonderful World of Disney, maybe?) and Eisner would open the show with some sort of schtick? He was in MK filming for that opening piece right near the Swiss Family Treehouse. They were all filming and he was doing his lines so there was no way I could get a pic, etc. But it was kind of cool!

Ah, that makes sense. I meant initially, because, yes, it was pushed with them.

Very kewl that you got to meet Mr. Joe Rohde. I've never met anyone from Disney while on vacation at the parks. It would be super kewl though.

My wife and I watch any show on Travel or History that is Disney related. Seeing that you noticed him in the park and got a neat pic with Mr. Rohde...WOW!

Hope 1 day we are as lucky to snap a pic like that with a Disney Exec/Imagineer.

Thanks for sharing.

Cool pic and story! Thank you for sharing this! In "06, my wife and I were in AK and near the Nemo show, it was not open, my wife HAD to use the ladies room, we found one on the exit area of the show, and I was just standing around in a quiet area, when about 10 "suits" walked by and two stopped to talk to me and ask how I was doing and actually apologize that the Nemo show was not open and asked us to come back the next year, and of course we did! Now, I do not know who they were, did not take the time to look at their name badges, which was a ding dong thing on my part. But, my small brush with certain execs!

answers to some questions

What was the story about the earing? :D

What exactly is wrong with him and why hasn't he been fixed in the last 2 years?
Why have we been stuck with a case of seemingly incurable B mode. (B in this case also standing for "bad show".)
While we are asking about Everest, hows about that other waterfall that is never working?
And the blowing snow effect at the top?
And the seldom working bird?
The hit-or-miss steam?
And the awol icy mist in the caves?

I could give Joe, or any person in authority over at AK, quite the third degree...

The version he told me several years ago was that he would pick up new ones when travelling to various countries around the world, and just kept adding them on.

well, the story i heard did include that, but he told me that the initial earring was given to him by an (i think) African tribe. he went to do research for something, and they had to get to know the "natives" or something to that extent... i don't remember exactly where he said or the specifics of the story, but i do remember very clearly him saying that the piercing was an honor and he was really excited when he got it, then he kept adding rings to it (like Lee said).

ok, as far as the effects go, last time i asked a friend who still worked there (this was about a year and a half ago), the mist effect at the top of the mountain is off now because the spouts that give off that mist were ALWAYS clogging. they'd have to get maintenance up there on a regular basis to get them clear, so they just didn't bother with them anymore because it was a hassle.

the bird (ever since opening) never worked perfectly. the mechanism that it is mounted on has never been reliable, and i don't think that they believe it is a vital part of the "show", so i guess it gets largely ignored. this happened while i was there too, it's been going on since the beginning.

the steam from the train is a very cool effect, but from what i understand, it gets clogged too... plus, try standing in that position for over an hour when EVERY MINUTE (literally every 60 seconds) you get a face full of steam :brick:it's not fun. so i think sometimes it may be clogged, and other times, it's actually the CM's who request it to stay off. another thing might be (and i don't know this for sure) but maybe they think it's a safety issue where the rear enablers on the train can't see for a brief second during a vital time (the trains dispatch), so they turn it off for that? i don't know, that might be a stretch.

i can remember since before we started doing preview days that the waterfalls were never 100% functional for very long. like the bird, they've always had their issues... it's very cool when they work, but again, i don't think they feel like it's a vital part of the "show".

ok, now to the Yeti. this IS a vital part of the show, so i'm not sure why they haven't fixed him yet EXCEPT for the fact that it would probably take the entire attraction down for a LONG time, depending on what the issue is. i remember doing track walks at the end of the night, and they would run a diagnostic mode every evening that slowed down his 11 (i think) second show (i know it doesn't seem like that long, it's because you don't see all of it) to over 6 hours! they had to run this every night for some reason. the Yeti is a completely separate entity from the mountain. he has his own support, foundation, etc. so if there was an issue with the hydraulics (which i believe are equivalent to a 747 simulator like Star Tours) it would take a LOOOONG time to fix.

hope this helps

Thanks for your input.

That stuff I left in the quote above...ever wonder what's wrong with WDW management circa 2010?

No excuse for any of the above. If an effect was worth putting in the show, it's worth maintaining 100%. Hello SQS.....

Cool! I would love to meet Joe some day.

Only time I've ever had a "close encounter" with any kind of a higher-level Disney exec was one time Al Weiss (who was the head of WDW at the time) walked past us at the Studios as we were waiting for the little ceremony to begin to mark Walt's 100th birthday. I would've ask for a quick photo, but it was one of those he-passes-by-"hey, wait a second, wasn't that Al Weiss?" kinda things.

Hey I was there that day...He wasnt the only one who was there that day too......

I was under the impression that it wasn't that the mechanisms for the mist were clogging, but that they were obscuring other sensors on the ride, and that the chilled caves was causing too much expansion/contraction on the ride steel.

As for the Yeti, it seems there is an issue with the foundation supports of the Yeti. We had heard rumors of a screen projection of the yeti taking it's place while they worked on the foundation, is that out of the question now?

Hello SQS.....
Criteria for SQS in 2010:

1. Is the word "Celebrate" used?
2. Does it prominently promote Pixar, princesses, or pirates?
3. Are there more screens than audio animatronics?
4. Are there more inoperable effects than operating?
5. Is the word "Celebrate" used again?
6. Are there no seasonal overlays?
7. Is it a parade older than ten years without a refresh?
8. Is it a show older than ten years without a refresh?
9. Can you use Stitch?
10. Can you use Ellen?

ROFL

So, so true.

I would make exceptions for the following movies: Wall-E, The ioncredibles, Ratatouille, and Up.

I don't accept either one as an excuse to cut the effect.
Firstly, if mist causes issues with sensors, why is it that Mummy can have all kinds of mist throughout it's ride without having those problems? Because they made it work. Disney can make it work if they want to.

Secondly, it wasn't that cold in the caves. Surely not enough to have any serious impact on the steel. What, coasters can't run in the cold now?

Exactly, it is laziness and penny pinching at fault here. Neither are a valid excuse.

The mist effect, is just like the rest of AK, they use pressurized water and spray it out of really fine nozzles, so they can clog up with dirt and algae, they you need to add chemicals to reduce the algae growth and then that gets expensive, then the nozzles need to be removed and cleaned and reinstalled. Then the areas are not easily accessible, so it takes time and manpower.

So when you are trying to save money, you have the minimum people you need to do the maintenance, and safety is the number #1 priority, so you use your workers to do all the safety checks and PM's . Then a show item breaks or needs to be fixed, you don't have enough people or time to do it, so you just turn it off because the ride is still running.

I have heard managers and even directors say, if the guests aren't complaining about it then it must not be a problem.

As far as SQS goes, when you gut your entire SQS dept, then you don't have to worry about too many SQS reports especially when only 1 or 2 people cover the entire property. And getting an 70% report is ok, when everybody used to get at least 95-100% and the senior vice-president thinks that is ok because it is still a passing grade?
