It's Way Too COLD!!!!

Its always funny living in Wisconsin. Everyone in the south is saying its cold when its 30. We had off monday and tuesday and two other days this year because it was so cold. -20 degrees and felt like -45. Now there are people that are colder than that. A part in northern Wisconsin reached a feels like temp of -75!!!! And an inch of snow in the south= a snow day (except they had ice which is really bad for us up here also) while a foot of snow= a most likely closing for our schools. Its really interesting how the states vary so much when it comes to weather.
PS Im not trying to sound like a jerk or anything when I was comparing us to the south, it was just for effect and to have fun. I also know that there are places far worse than what Wisconsin is seeing.

Yep. The deep freeze took 3 of our 5 cars out over a few days. This is extreme for N. IL. But I look at Minnesota and yikes! But every region adapts differently. A 4x4 vehicle is usally enough for us, no snow tires, studs or chains. We don't plug our vehicles in at night. I guess if we did the cold wouldn't have cracked a radiator.

She is cute and she looks like she is having fun in the snow. We have a 10yr. old shi tzu and her name is Cinnamon and she tolerates the snow. image.jpg
We recently had to put down our 12yr old shi tzu:grumpy::grumpy::grumpy: And she just loved jumping into snow piles.

It's not really overreaction...a lot of that is that the southern states aren't equipped to handle the weather. I grew up in NJ and went to college in Syracuse, NY...and in both places, we saw enough winter weather to justify the cost of things like heavy duty snow plows, serious de-icing equipment, etc. I now live in the Houston area, where it's very uncommon to see any kind of winter weather, so the cities consider it fiscally unnecessary/irresponsible to put $ towards things like this- i.e. since it might only get mild use once or twice every 3 - 5 years (if that). So, when that random winter weather event just happens to stretch south and hit here, it's a major problem. What would be classified as mild winter weather in Wisconsin (i.e. what you might see in late Oct/early Nov) could cripple a southern city just because they lack the means to treat the roads and the plumbing in many structures just weren't built to handle such weather. It wasn't until I moved here and saw how just a little bit of ice can cause hundreds of accidents and tons of ruptured pipes.

The more often scenario is a prediction of snow that never comes. Schools and businesses close for nothing. That said, many of the Atlanta area school districts have always played it close to the edge with calling off classes and yesterday many put off sending kids home early.

Reed's belief that staggered closings would have helped is denial. Parents and family members were not going to wait when the snow fall was increasing while temperatures were dropping.

Schools will do everything they can to have tooshies in the chairs until the clock strikes the hour where the school districts will receive the per child allocations for students that day. A gamble that usually works, not so much yesterday.

It also didn't work about five years ago when they had trouble getting kids home during the floods. At the very least there needs to be a procedure in place to keep track of students instead of telling concerned parents "We don't know where your child is."

Oh Dear. If our administrators couldn't tell us who was on each and every bus my board would have their At Will papers meeting them at the door the next morning. We know who is on each and every bus leaving the school and a notation if a student was absent. Going to school the parent darn well better be able to inform the school if they put their kid on the bus. We have an all call system if a bus must return to school.

I've lived in the Gulf coast region my whole life. I was 15 before I ever even saw snow. A few winters ago we were in Oklahoma while the hubby worked on a project there for a few months. During that time there were a few snow & ice storms. I was in a total panic! Seriously. I don't know what to do in that stuff. I certainly don't want to drive in it. I called mom & grandmother terrified. They're from Michigan so they had some good laughs at my panic. They told me to go stock up like a hurricane is coming and plan to stay in a few days. That's what I did. Tough being hunkered in a small studio hotel room with 2 teens + a little dog. LOL! I was also pretty afraid the ice would damage our poor little dog's feet. She's a little Southerner, too. The first time I took her out in feels-like -10 I stood her up where the grass was under the ice & snow and she just looked up at me like "Are you serious, Mom?" It was so funny. She got the idea real fast and wasted no time. Our dog is not amused by snow. She hates it. The kids found it amusing for 10 minutes max then they were over it. I have no clue how Northerners do it. None. I would just give up & die.

The reason there are so many snowbirds in Florida.

So here's the good news...our feel like temp is at 8! Very sad that I am that happy that it is "normal cold". Bad news...first inch of snow today (not bad), but by wed. at midnight, I may have shoveled a little over 18" worth. Even though I don't hit your other thread @figmentfan423 , I know what my next weeks worth of workouts will be.
