Yeah; COP was the most-seen stage show in the history of American theater. It is sitting in the dust now. They need to prioritize with Walt Disney's message, and not with the general competition. I ask them - why do you exist if you're doing this??!

Wow- What are they doing at Walt Disney World?

Hey Steve- What have you heard about this?

I don't know how much to trust screamscape.com but they said

Screamscape has been informed that as of Jan. 1st, 2003 AT&T will no longer be the official long distance sponsor of Walt Disney World and their logo will be removed from Spaceship Earth shortly after the holiday crowds disappear.

Correction...CoP was the stage show with the most performances, not the most seen. And it only accomplished that because of the fact that it played almost every single day since 1964.

I don't want to sound cruel in my posts here, but I think we are getting out of control with this. Until it is announced I don't think we should go nuts. Look at what happened when people heard the GMR rumor. People worried...and look at how it is now. It is the same Great Movie Ride we know and love. Please don't get crazy over something you aren't sure about, because it will only take a bad situation and make it worse.

Because Disney already has a high-speed race track at Epcot, Test Track, sources said the company will most likely build a moving theater-type ride in Spaceship Earth to handle up to 2,400 park patrons per hour.

AAHHHHHH!!!!!!! Local news officials are so oblivious.

Yes. It seems to be all about getting appeal and making money, too me. They are taking a valuable lesson of life, and replacing with what goes against the company, just to get the cash flow going. This is sick. They need a new dynasty. And fast.

What? A major world-famous corporation trying to make a few bucks? Ludicrous!:lol: ;)

If this turns out to be true, its a travesty. What gets killed next? Its a small world? These people must be stopped before Disney World becomes just another amusement park.

I am going to take this as a grain of salt till something official is said, or an inside source confirms this....or a press release is in my hot little hands.... to close Epcot's ICON and center piece for 2 years...does not sound right...

Plus.. we are in the middle of the fall ratings book... could some one be looking for a big story, be the first to break it... to there boost ratings (allegedly)....

I am wating for something more concrete...

That's a good point about ratings. The local stations were pulling pretty good stunts and stories when I was there in May 2001.

I am waiting on something more concrete to surface too.

I could see an extended refurbishment for major work on the track, rumored change of sponsorship. If sponsorship changes, I would expect the entire ending to be changed.

Hey look, Orlando's local NBC affiliate can read the internet!

So now we have news stations making hyperbole about a "project" that was already loaded with hyperbole to begin with.

One more thing, there is a desire to replace a few attractions at Epcot, but SE is not one of them (remember, I said "replace," not "refurbish.")

Exactly.... there has been talk since early Spring...about At&t dropping there sponsorship.... if they do go... SE may pick up a new sponsor...do some refurb...and change things around as Brent said.

...but...I am just assuming :)

Grizz,

except for die hard Disney lovers, and people who like to live in the past/not move on, Futureworld is hopelessly out of date (but so is tomorrowland, but lets not get into that). FW needs an overhaul to attract new audiences, because in a few more years, without keeping the attractions up to date, people will go to Epcot for nothing more than free soda and a purple dragon

Griz, you know that I value the past as much as anyone, but I also know that Walt built the concept of EPCOT on new and evolving ideas.

I think that the Futureworld section of EPCOT especially needs to stay fresh. I do not agree with all changes made lately (especially de-emphasizing learning or history for simple thrills, when learning can be fun), but am not opposed to updating Futureworld attractions. Walt himself said that EPCOT would be a continuously changing, "experimental" city of tomorrow. The key is innovation and commitment to quality.

He also planned the Magic Kingdom to be a balance between reverence for the past and excitement for the future.

Change should not be just for change' sake, but nor should keeping things the same be done just because it was done first that way.

As for SE, I like the ride. But I do not think that it is sacrosanct. It is more important to review and maintain EPCOT's attractions in a mix that lives up to the challenging spirit of the parK: not a museum but an "Experimental Community of Tomorrow." Keep the experiment unless a renovation or replacement would better serve the park's mission.

Right now, we just don't know.

Guys, guess what? SE already has a capacity of 2,400 guests an hour. It already relies on a "moving theatre" type of system, which I'm guessing is the omnimover. Just expect the same story told differently. After all, it has been almost ten years since the last rehab. Not that the current version is bad or anything.....

Does anybody else doubt the integrity of the entire story when they have a quote like this?

What attraction from TDS could possibly go Spaceship Earth? I can't think of a single ride system from TDS that could be adapted to that building. Journey to the Center of the Earth and Indy vehicles and track are far too big. Nothing else seems right, either.

It's almost like they got some guy who worked for Imagineering back in 1984 and asked him for his insight on 'Project Gemini.'

I dunno guys...

Didn't Steve post something about Time Racers being added to Epcot back in September? From what I remember his info said "new ride to be located somewhere in Futureworld."

IF Disney brass is stupid enough to do this sort of thing to the Epcot equivalent of PotC--in other words an "it ain't broke nor unpopular, so don't fix/repace it" type of attraction--then they deserve the backlash that they're gonna get for this one.

At least w/ Horizons they had the "excuse" that the building had structural damage. But what's scary is how out-of-the blue they decided to redo Epcot's equivalent to It's A Small World--aka Journey Into Imagination--into two not very well-received rides.

What hacks me off here is the fact that SSE does NOT need to be redone or replaced. And yes, I realize that for now it is only a rumor.

But what about all of FW West? Frankly, all three pavillions on this side of the park are either run down or old. Living Seas needs the complete overhaul with a cool non-thrill ride replacement attraction. I mean let's face it, that place was cool back in '84, but Sea World and most large aquariums now kick its butt big time.

And why not fill in the space between Land and Sea with new cool fun educational true-to-the-spirit-of-Epcot attractions for both pavillions? People pass by Land and Sea more often than not nowadays or at least hit them after they've seen everything else.

And what about the rumored Weather/Air pavillion? They have a ride system in Tokyo Disney Sea that, from what I've read about it, would be great at Epcot.

And then there's the fact that you can shoot a cannon off in WoL and not hit a soul during peak season.

And it's been since I believe '87 or '88 since we had a new WS pavillion, and not a new ride nor major show-type attraction added to this part of Epcot since Maelstrom.

In other words, if Disney is so moronic to replace one of the few rides that every-freakin'-person who walks into Epcot tends to go on at least once and not rework the obvious out-of-date dinosaurs like LS, WoL, and the Land, OR put new rides into all the extra space this park seems to have both in FW and WS, then they don't deserve our patronage.

And yes, I'm quite a bit afraid because this Time Racers rumor has been going around (with Steve's help) since at least September--although today was the first day I actually heard of it's possible intended location.
