Like omg like yeah I like totally just vote for like what's cool or pretty.
I vote for the one I feel is best :) Not the one I feel is coolest or prettiest (unless of course I feel it's also the best one)

I personally took offense to your voting style as described in your post, and I likened to it a very real situation. If you're going to waste your vote and not help out the person whose work you think is best, then I feel you're wasting it.
I'll clarify then. While I see many shots that are obviously and technically good, that doesn't make them the best in my book. Laura said it better in that it's about conveying an emotion or capturing a theme. If someone with a scanned picture and no alterations whatsoever captured the theme or emotion better than someone with a $1000 camera, then I'm going to vote for the former. That is what should make these contests fun. You're comparing apples and oranges by comparing my voting style here to a friggin' presidential election. There's nothing at stake here.

Let's just keep disagreeing then :) I'm not comparing apples to oranges, a vote is a vote is a vote. Personally, I find the waste of any vote to be a disgusting thing, regardless of how trivial the topic being voted on may be. Thankfully in these contests, it takes me all of 30 seconds to decide which gets my vote as opposed to a presidential election.

Speaking of voting...nibbs, one thing I'd like to see less of is people begging for votes or asking for votes. If the picture is good, it's good. No need to ask for votes

Hey guys...you all know I"m taking all this in...however, there's still something that I am looking for...and that's for new idea topics for next year's contest. I have a few, but I really would like some more to choose from, so we can continue to keep the contests fresh.

(You can, of course, still debate everything else that's being debated. )

How about:
  • fire
  • neon
  • special effects
  • hats
  • and....wait for it.....

  • mullets

 I'm not aware of people asking/begging for votes at all.

As far as contest topics go, I love the Special Events idea. I think therefore Halloween could be nixed Especially considering the low participation...think of all the people who never go at Halloween. Christmas, on the other hand, should stay just because, well...it's Christmas! I also think Villains should be changed to "Evil Disney" (or something of the sort). That way it's expanded to things like ToT and not just limited to meet and greet characters.

Well, i've still got some PMs saved from some certain members begging for votes, etc. It went on in the PML when i was a member back then. Wouldn't be surprised if it still does.

Nope it doesn't. I haven't even seen the photo contests mentioned in PML in probably over a year.

.... And i can do better with a kodak $10 disposable camera. Your point being what?

Generally if you shoot it right the first time, you wont have to spend any time in front of a computer.

My point being it's already being done by a computer... just by the limited computer built into your digital camera. Even with film: If your $10 disposable print is better, how would you post it here, except to put it through some scanner somewhere and convert it to a digital format? That's still post-processed. The scanner is going to read 12-16 bits per channel and pick the "best" 8-bits.

I don't see why the automatic decisions made by a digital camera or scanner circuit are acceptable while considered corrections made by the photographer are not. Especially when those decisions can be made on a large monitor with precise tools, rather than on a camera where you are guessing if white-balance "-2" or "+3" looks better on a 2inch LCD.

I completely agree. A lot of my pictures I actually intentionally underexpose just because I think the computer does a better job with exposure than my lenses a lot of the time and prefer to fix them afterwards. I also don't have time when I've got my family standing in front of the castle to fiddle around and try and manually set the exposure on my camera, especially when the settings change every time a cloud rolls over.

I vote for the one I feel is best :) Not the one I feel is coolest or prettiest (unless of course I feel it's also the best one)

Yet you assume that everyone who voted differently than you, did not vote for whom they felt was best.

I can see both sides to the digital manipulation argument. The photo should be displayed as it was photographed, no cropping (should have done that when you took the photo), no editing, no brightening, etc. It is a photography contest not a digital media contest. Having said that, people vote more on composition and adherence to theme, so what difference does it make if it was auto adjusted. Unfortunately not everyone has a photo editing software program on their computer. So allowing any sort of manipulation gives some an advantage over others.

How about this: Each week have 2 contests. It would be the same theme for both, but one category will be unedited photos and the other will be edited photos.

Here are some ideas for contests:

costumed characters alone, no people
Meet & Greet Photography with characters
Non-character Cast Members
Villians, but don't limit it to Disney Villians
I like having Halloween & Christmas contests separate
Flags
crying children
Your family at WDW
Funny looking tourists
waiting in a cue line
great facial expressions
Windows/doors
landscaping
water parks
transportation
attraction details (ie: basket of apples in the judge's tent, model planes in the Barnstormer, Pooh & Mr. Toad in the Pooh ride)
Hidden Mickeys
Streetmosphere People
