"It's a Small World" on a recent visit

Hi everyone. I returned home about a week ago from a WDW visit. I find it interesting that there has already been some lack of quality control in "It's A Small World" since it's restoration. On my previous visit in 2006, not long after the reopening of Small World after it's rehab, it looked and sounded gorgeous. It was an amazing finely tuned attraction. A little over a year later I noticed some things that were disappointing and I'm wondering if any of you notice these kinds of things happening at the Park as well.

For starters the new Clock in the boarding area was not working. No ticking, no motion, not even a spot light on it. It remained that way my entire visit. Another major difference I noticed was that the audio for the attraction was already lacking and volume levels for certain countries were almost inaudible. In fact the entire soundtrack was being played at a lower volume than it was a year ago, lessening the impact of the experience. The toy soldier music was hardly audible, as was the Can-Can music, and several others in the European countries. Later in the week the music's volume levels seemed to be up more, but there were still certain sections where you could not hear them as you could a year ago. A friend also was pointing out dirty areas of the attraction to me. Ledges with dirt and dust piled up. To which I replied that it's hard for them to keep everything clean and dirt free with this much use. Is it that early March considered an 'off season' so they don't care about giving us the attractions in perfect order? Do they even lower music levels to conserve power? It really makes me wonder. "Haunted Mansion" was much worse for the audio which is sad as well, but it has not had a major restoration like "Small World" just did.

"It's A Small World" is one of my all time favorites so it was a let down to see that it is not being given the attention it deserves so soon after it's wonderful restoration.

1. The Italian boy on the gondola has been missing for months.

2. Styrofoam balls have fallen off of the showboat in the final scene.

3. Additional AAs are missing from the moon over London.

4. The clock hasn't worked properly in weeks.

5. Service maintenance doors are frequently left open. I have seen backstage areas several times within the last few months.

I never noticed any audio problems, though.

I actually like the original. I must be one of the few people on EARTH who doesn't sing it for the rest of the day! It simply doesn't bother me.

I like the song as well.
I used to know the refrain in three languages, but it's been a while...

tirian, with your mention of the missing Italian boy you reminded me that the boy on the large camel in Egypt beating his drums was missing as well. This is really sad. Is there a certain address to write to for concerns like this that may actually reach the correct department? I know it's a long shot for things like that, but I feel like writing a letter.

I love the song as well. Those original recordings are a classic.

Get rid of it? This ride is legendary. Tell anyone to name a disney ride and they will mention this. The sad part is the lack of attention to detail in fixing problems with it. Don't change it just keep it fresh.

I wish they would come up with a new song.

Are you kidding?! :zipit:

I just finished reading a book called "Remembering Walt", which is a collection of memories of Walt from his family, friends, and co-workers. After the Sherman brothers wrote this song for IASW at the 1964-65 World's Fair, they commented to Walt that perhaps they'd donate the proceeds from the song to Unicef, who was sponsoring the ride at the fair. He told them that they'd do no such thing and that this song would be putting their kids thru college; and he was right. This is one of the most recognizable songs out there, love it or hate it.

Some people just love italian... he's been abducted...
2. Styrofoam balls have fallen off of the showboat in the final scene.
Spring has begun... no further need for them
3. Additional AAs are missing from the moon over London.
After research we found out, there are no people living on the moon...
4. The clock hasn't worked properly in weeks.
It was meant that way...
5. Service maintenance doors are frequently left open. I have seen backstage areas several times within the last few months.
It's done to save power... and natural air flow is so much better... :D
I never noticed any audio problems, though.
Neither have we... :lookaroun

One of my geese was missing from the Holland scene when I rode yesterday. It was quite sad for me, as they are my favorite part (I love the honking noise they make). But all was not lost, as I had purchased the last WDCC Holland girl and goose set from MGM earlier in the day. :)

I forgot about one of the geese being missing, Figment! I noticed that too and even took a photo shown below. I wonder how the people who spent all that time restoring the attraction just over a year ago would feel to hear that it's already falling apart?

I know what you mean about the Haunted mansion. My wife and I LOVE that ride but honestly it is in dire need of referbishment. As a person who works in Entertainment Production I'd say the lowering of volume levels isn't likely for power conservation. From my experience what most likely happened is they recieved complaints about it being too loud one day from several guest and turned it down without paying too much attention to the overal sound level. The difference in power consumtion by the audio amplifiers would not really have a significant effect on the power consumption of the attraction by their making a slight adjustment to the volume so power conservation isn't really an issue.

Most likely it is just simple lack of quality control. It is unfortunate but you got to remember the people that work at Disney are prone to make mistakes at work just like the rest of us! It is a big responsibility working for America's leading family vacation destination we should all remember that and give them a little slack every now and then. After all they get it right most of the time leaving us all feeling well entertained by the end of the vacation. :sohappy:

Is it possible the reason why figures are missing is due to the fact that it might be easier to remove and fix from a remote location and then fixed put back in?
