Just a quick update to those of you who care....I suggest the rest of you skip this! ;)

My mother had a skin biopsy done 2 days before she felland broke her hip. We went back yesterday for the follow-up, and it was positive for squamous cell cancer. She will be scheduled for surgery ASAP. It has a extremely good survival rate if caught early and treated surgically...BUT the surgery is very extensive and can be quite disfiguring. The lesion is just the "tip of the iceberg" with the actual carcinoma spreading deeper and wider. By the time most people become concerned, the damage is pretty extensive! However, if left untreated, it's a terrible way to die.

This, along with other skin cancers, is increasing in frequency. I highly reccomend that you all get checked every 6 months if you have ANY sun exposure, or live in a warm climate (ie Florida) The rest of you should have a baseline check done in your early twenties...this stuff is showing up in younger and younger people. I have already had 3 tiny pre-cancerous spots removed....and my dermatologist says I have little or no sun damage to my skin in general! (Unless I'm swimming laps, I wear sunglasses and a hat into the pool, even!) Please, everyone, wear a sunscreen with at least SPF 15 daily! (Ladies, most make-up now contains sunscreen, as do most lipsticks. Unfortunately, I come from a family background that discouraged make-up as "vanity" and am now, as is my mother, paying a price. Who would have thought it?)

Oh, Mom-

I'm so sorry. Please tell your mom she is in our thoughts (as are you!). This is becoming par for the course for you....

Both of you take care, and go knock someone of that bobcat and work out some aggression!

ps I've been obsessed with sunblock for the past 16years. My family makes fun of me for being so pale, but I'm terrified of skin cancer, or wrinkes, or premature aging!

Pass those on to "Grandmom" as well. My thoughts & prayers are with you & your family until you all get past this...& you will. My aunt underwent the exact same surgery for the exact same cancer (on her shoulder & back). Very scary, but as you said...the odds are definitely in her favor. Take good care & please, keep us posted. Lots of love & pixie dust....

I'm sure all will go well Mom. I'm thinking of you all.

Thats scary to hear after the sun burn I had back in May. I was in direct sun light for over seven hours. The burn was the worst I had ever seen or had. I looked like I had been burned in an actual fire. :(

Mighty I don't blame you at all...I learned a lesson after this last one I had. And it's scary to think of what sort of damage I did. I wear sunblock every day now. I keep it in my car, back pack, in the house, everywhere! lol

Mom, we'll be praying for our "Grandma".

And I don't know about the US, but today is Grandmother's day down here!
So, to our online Grandma.

My thoughts are with you and your mom. You are a class act and have the grace and dignity to deal with this like no other.

Mom, I'm sorry to hear this latest news. How are you holding up? I know things have been so stressful for you lately and I feel terrible that you're going through even more now. I hope everything goes well with your mom and I'll be thinking even more of you and wishing for you to have the strength that you need to get through this obstacle in your life. I know how hard it can be on the family member who is taking care of the patient "situation", and it sounds like you've had to take care of a lot lately. I'm hoping the best for you.

Big "HUG"
Take Care,
Paula

Maybe you should change your name to "The Daughter".:)

My thoughts and prayers are also with you and The Mom's Mom, but as you say, skin cancer is relatively treatable, so try to keep a positive attitude!

My mother died of cancer several years ago. She was 57 and in otherwise great health.

I've been encouraged recently by some of the big advances in understanding and treating different forms of cancer.

I wish the news shows would spend more time talking about things like cancer breakthroughs and other positive news. It seems our priorities are a bit screwed up when everybody knows who Allen Iverson is, but few people can name any scientists on the cutting edge of cancer research.

Mom - I am very sorry to hear about all of this. It can't really be stopped but put faith in yourself. I hope all becomes better soon. Grandma and you will always be in our prayers.

I'm thinking of ya!

...I don't know if the BIG GUY listens to me anymore, Marcia, but I'll say a prayer for your Mom's quick recovery and to give you the strength to cope with yet another misfortune in your life...

...I will be at Church later today for a Baptism and I promise to light a candle for your family...

...my thoughts will be with you thru the entire ordeal and I send a reassuring hug that things will be OK.

God Bless ya.

:( Sorry to hear that Marcia! Hugs and  to you and your mom. Good luck! If she doesn't make it, just know that she'd be happier then she ever could be here on earth, the pain would be gone and she'd be with the father. :) Keep a positive outlook and all will turn out right. You're in my prayers, heart, and thoughts. Remember: magic Happens! :)

Thank you all for your prayers and concern! :) I'm very optimistic about the surgery...It has a very good survival rate.

My life isn't all "taking care of my mother" ...Although sometimes it feels that way!

I hostessed a dinner for 12 of my husband's business associates last night (my husband, bless his heart, set it up in a private room at a club, so I didn't have to entertain at home) We had a 27th floor view of downtown (which is pretty high by Florida standards), including a thunderstorm...very nice. Then when dessert and coffee arrived, there were fireworks across the river...our guests thanked us for the show. ;)

BTW, prior to breaking her hip, my mom was in pretty good shape with no painful health problems. Unfortunately, early skin cancer is not painful, which is why a lot of people ignore it until it's too late...kind of like a toothache...by the time it hurts, the damage is done! Again, I'm not so much concerned about her dying as her emotional status...she was just starting to get her life back...and so was I! And I know it will be "disfiguring" but fortunately, she's not a very vain person. (although I don't think ANY of us would want scars on our face) It's better than the alternative!

Now see that, Mom.... You're the only woman I know who has that kind of power and organizational skill to pull that off.... I would only be able to make a thunderstorm appear if we were stuck outside with no shelter! LOL!

I hope you had a great time! :)
