Is This The Real Life? Is This Just Fantasy? - All Aboard the Disney Fantasy 3/23/13-3/30/13

Hi everyone!! I'm back for one more trip report!! This time it's my journey on the Disney Fantasy. My family decided to cruise again with Disney (we cruised on the Magic in 2010) and they did not disappoint.

Our sail dates were March 23 - March 30th. We also stayed at Animal Kingdom Lodge on the 30th since it was easier to fly back the next day. You can read about my 4 parks in one day solo adventure here.

It was nearing time for Mickey’s pirate tutorial so I snagged a spot on the left side of the stage up on deck 12. Unfortunately another family had camped out in the spot that I had originally wanted so I wasn’t really where I wanted to be, but whatever. I still think I got some good shots of the characters. I’m glad I saw this show and the Buccaneer Blast later on in the evening since they were both really different, and also a lot of fun!

Once the show ended it was time to head down to the Royal Court for our pirate dinner. It seemed a little weird to be eating in such an elegant restaurant with everyone dressed up like pirates. For my appetizer I got the pot stickers. Just let me say that these things were PHENOMENAL. I found myself asking for more and more and more. I think I got three regular orders of it (which had 3 each) and then got an additional 6 of them. They were delicious!!! I think they also serve these at Ohana at WDW.

For my entree, I got the castaway chicken which was good, but not as good as the chicken I had at Animator’s Palate on night two!! For desert I had the chocolate rum cake which was tasty. The raspberry on the top was surprisingly good!

Once dinner was over we met Daisy in the atrium and then we met Peter Pan up on the balcony of deck 4 by the elevators. I found it interesting that sometimes the characters would randomly appear up here and not in a set location. It happened many times on the trip with Peter Pan, Aladdin, Tiana, and Ariel. It was great because I waited probably 30 seconds to see Peter Pan as opposed to probably 30 minutes when he was set to appear a couple days later. Another fun thing is that Peter Pan ran into Captain Hook and Mr. Smee when he was on his way back to Neverland. It was funny to watch that confrontation go down.

It was almost time for Buccaneer Blast to start, so we headed up to deck 11 to get a spot so we could watch. We wound up standing in the back on deck 11 since it wasn’t worth it to go up on deck 12 nor was it worth it to stand up in the herd of everyone else. The show was kind of fun, but it was really short. I did like how Jack Sparrow and his pirate crew was featured in this show though. I also loved the fireworks that were shot off. I think it’s really neat that Disney is allowed to do this while at sea. It’s definitely quite the experience.

They had a buffet set up in Cabanas, but I wasn’t really hungry and I was super tired from getting up early to see the ship pull in. We also were stopping in San Juan the following day so that meant an early wake up as well so I made my way back to the room for bed.

That's how I felt about my character pictures too. Hoping you can meet many characters on your next cruise!!

I'm pretty sure I've gotten most of them for Dream/Fantasy (unless they release new ones, or different outfits for the VIPs). But I will always meet a character again.

30?! Oh my gosh that's a lot!! lol I think I have met her in like 10, if that. haha. I do have a picture of me and her from way back at Epcot when they wore the silver metallic outfits with the rainbows on them :)

Yeah, for the 8 VIPs, I've been able to get double-digits for all of them (during 8 years of meeting the characters). And just for DCL, I've met Minnie in 9 different outfits.

Woo hoo! A Disney Fantasy trip report! :D Only 24 days until I see this beautiful ship! I can't wait.

Way to go on getting so many character pictures! I love the picture of you and Donald that you used for your profile picture. Super cute. It sounds like you kept yourself busy throughout the cruise! I'm slightly exhausted from reading about all of your activities. Hahaha I'm looking forward to reading the rest!

I think for the Fantasy they had Mickey (3 outfits), Minnie (4 outfits), Donald (3 outfits), Daisy (3 outfits), Chip and Dale (2 outfits), Goofy (3 outfits), Pluto, Snow White, Dopey, Aladdin (street rat and Prince Ali), Genie, Jake the Neverland Pirate, Captain Hook, Mr. Smee, Lilo, Stitch, Peter Pan, Tiana, Cinderella, Aurora, Ariel, Phineas/Ferb, Woody, Jessie, Buzz, Tinkerbelle, Pinocchio, Jack Sparrow, and Max.

The only ones that I missed were Max and Tinkerbelle. I was bummed that he never appeared in the atrium although I wasn't too upset over missing Tink.

We're on the Western Caribbean itinerary. I wanted to see the Mayan ruins in Mexico so that's why we picked it. :)

Day 5: March 27, 2013 - San Juan

After a fun filled night of pirate adventures it was yet another early morning for our day of fun in San Jan. I was excited to see San Juan since it was not one of the ports last time we cruised with Disney (we had St. Maarten instead).

We arrived on land around 9:00 and we met up with one of my dad’s friends who currently resides in San Juan. It was fun to see them again and they were going to take us around the city to show us some popular sites. We had originally booked the Barcardi Rum Tour, but thank goodness we cancelled that. I don’t think I would have been able to handle that after the excursion we had the day before.

Our first stop was one of the historic sites of San Juan which was Castillo San Felipe del Morro. Let me just say that the walk from the sidewalk all the way up to the entrance to the fort was absolutely brutal. It was blistering hot with barely any wind and the hill was just very steep. I could barely get up it without being out of breath, and to think I am planning on attempting to run the 1/2 marathon at WDW next year... not sure how that’s going to happen....

Once we got up to the entrance I started to explore the front part of the fort which was really neat. There was some kind of symbol or crest at the top of the entrance which I really liked, so yay for that!

We continued to walk toward the inside and explored for a while. There were a lot of stairs and hills to climb so I recommend you sit this one out if that isn’t your thing. Once we got up to the top of the fort, we were treated with a great view of part of the city and of the ocean!! After about an hour of exploring we started to make our way out toward the front for our next part of the city.

We traveled to a more popular area of the city (where all the shops were) and stopped at one of the famous churches to look inside. I can’t remember the name of the church, but it was really neat to see all the statues and paintings inside. The ceiling was also really nice to look at.

One thing that I loved about this section of the city is the different colors of the buildings. I thought they all blended together really well and it was very nice to the eye. There was this one street that housed some of the only trees in San Juan (other than palm trees by the docks).

We grabbed some lunch at a local pizza shop which was great, but it took forever. I think we were in there for a total of two hours. I was getting really annoyed and antsy, but that’s how it usually is at that place apparently. The pizza was really good once we got it though!

After lunch we started to make our way over toward the shops and browsed for a while. The sidewalks were really small and it was crowded so that wasn’t pleasant, but it was fun to look in the shops. We saw some more nicely colored buildings, one of which was in the Rum Diaries with Johnny Depp!

We didn’t have anything else planned after looking in the shops so we headed back toward the gangway and said goodbye to our friend and then went back onto the ship.

Oz: The Great and Powerful was playing in the Buena Vista Theatre so I decided to go and check it out!

First thing is that the theatre was packed so either a) many people skipped out on it the night before or b) many people just loved it so much that they had to see it again. I was shocked that many people were there considering we were still docked at the port and had at least another 2 hours of being in San Juan, but luckily I was able to snag a seat on the aisle in one of the upper rows.

The movie was really good but I wouldn’t say that it was great. I thought that the use of black and white at the beginning (similar to that in the Wizard of Oz) was a nice effect. The land of Oz was also really neat. I did think that the first half of the movie was slow and boring. The real action of the movie didn’t come until the end. So I would have to say that the best part of the movie was the last 45 minutes. I’m glad that they were showing this onboard the ship since I don’t think I would have been too pleased if I had paid the ridiculous price to see this back at home.

After the movie let out I went back to the room to grab the camera and then went out on a character hunt. My mission was to see Lilo and Stitch, Snow White and Dopey, and Aladdin and Genie. My absolute must see was Dopey though! I’ve always loved the seven dwarfs and was very fortunate to see them all on Main Street USA at MK in WDW back in 1998 when I was three. I still somewhat remember meeting them, although seeing home video has really helped me remember it more. I had such a great interaction with all seven of the dwarfs and I was really sad when they pulled them from the parks and only brought them out for special occasions, which I think is stupid... but whatever nothing I can personally do about that.

Anyways, I hopped in line for Lilo and Stitch who were a lot of fun. We all pretended that we were surfing on the Hawaiian Roller Coaster ride. One thing that was kind of frustrating is that they changed up their poses on me mid photo so I was a little confused, but other than that they were a lot of fun. At the beginning of the cruise I was a little annoyed that Stitch had so much attention onboard (he was in the welcome aboard show, he appeared multiple times a day, etc.) but I really warmed up to him by the end of the week! So yay for Stitch!! Still no yay for his ride at WDW. :p :(

It was almost time for Snow White and Dopey to come out so I went over into the atrium to hop in line so I could guarantee that I saw them. I was able to see them and Dopey was really awesome! Mission accomplished there! I think I probably would have flipped if all seven of the dwarfs appeared onboard. That would have been great!!

After seeing Snow White and Dopey, I headed up to deck 4 to catch Aladdin and Genie who I also was successfully able to meet! I was kind of hoping to see Aladdin in his Prince Ali outfit, but instead he was in his street rat clothes! Oh well!! He did randomly appear in his Prince Ali outfit the night that “Aladdin: A Musical Spectacular” was being performed in the Walt Disney Theatre.

It was almost time for the show in the Walt Disney Theatre, which was Taylor Mason’s ventriloquism so I headed over there to meet my dad and we headed in and snagged our usual seats. Taylor’s show was funny, but it wasn’t hysterical. I thought the guy with the guitar (can’t remember his name, but he was featured in the show on the first night and had a separate cabaret on one of the sea day) was funnier. Taylor was still really funny though, but I often found myself checking my watch for the time hoping the show would be almost over. It was a family show though so he couldn’t really go into any adult humor, which is usually the funniest type of humor.

It was almost time for dinner at the Animator’s Palate, but we still had a little bit of time to kill so we hung out in the atrium for a bit. Poor Pinocchio didn’t have a line at all (which was sad) so I went to visit with him again!

We then made our way to the aft of deck 3 to go to the Animator’s Palate again! This night was the night that everything came to life which was really neat! We each were given a placemat in which we had to color in/draw on the cartoon figure that was on the placemat. Later on into the evening we were treated to a special surprise which featured our creations.

For my appetizer, I had the corn three ways. It was a buttered popcorn soup with spiced cornbread and caramelized popcorn. A little out of my comfort zone yet again, but I really enjoyed it!! I found it to be better when I dumped the popcorn into the soup! Definitely would have had it again!

For my entree I got the turkey which was good. It came with sweet mashed potatoes which I didn’t really care for, but I was easily able to switch to regular mashed potatoes!

After our entree was served they started the “show” which featured our placemat drawings! I thought it was really neat that they did this. It was an excellent use of technology! I also like how the floor lit up. We were then given given back our creations with an official animator sticker on them.

For desert, I had the sweet temptations which was delicious!

I wandered around the ship with my parents for a little bit. We ran into Cinderella and Pinocchio along the way.

We stopped to say hello to Cinderella since she didn’t have a line. Afterwards we headed to the Tube to see what was going on there.

We came in midway through “Pop” which was a pop culture trivia challenge which was fun to watch. Next up was 80s music challenge, which with the sarcasm and humor from our club host (David), was hilarious! I think I might have known maybe three of the songs that they played! It was nearing 11:30 once that concluded so we made our way up to the room for the night. Of course I had to go up to Luigi’s for a few slices of pizza just because I could!

Up Next: A double dose of characters and a show while at sea.

Sorry you didn't enjoy your excursion much, I've never done one. On cruises my family and I usually just take a cab to the nearest beach. The pictures at sunset on St. Thomas are awesome, I bet it was 10x more beautiful in person. Love all of the character interactions on the ship and Animator's Palate sounds like so much fun!

Thank you!! I didn't really say a whole lot to the characters to be completely honest. I kind of just went up and said hello and got a picture. Some of them motioned about how tall I was (Mickey, Donald) so I played along with that a bit.
