Is the "Earful Tower" returning as the DHS icon? See 2013 merchandise for clues

God bless the "Ignore" button.
Keep in mind that a lot of the picture frames are sold with OLD pictures of Donald and Goofy and a lot of merch featuring autographs have old signatures. I don't put too much stock in what merch decides to use.

red herring, does not look like the hat is going anywhere anytime soon
the hat is already represented in the poster inverted right dead center
why would they have used it twice?
earful towers was probably used as an sold stand by

The earful tower sort of lost it's "point" when the actual working studios shut down I think. To me it was more of a symbol of the studio itself (as it is at the studio in CA that isn't a theme park) with the theater being the main icon. I mean, the only way you really even see the tower is on the backlot tour (or what's left of it). It's sad really if you ask me.

I would love to read one official statement on why they blocked the view of the theater with that hat. In all the years since it went up, I've seen lots of insiders claim they know the reason the theater was blocked but it's never anything that came from TDOs mouths. I see folks complain all the time about how ugly it is but I think relatively, it's not that it's ugly so much as people hate it's placement (maybe I'm wrong). If they had put the hat up somewhere else, like maybe as a central unit over in the animation courtyard or something, I don't think it'd be hated as much.

Either way... much as I love the tower... I don't know that it makes sense as the park's official icon just because unlike the other 3 gates, it's not visible much at all anywhere as you walk the park. If anything, if the hat was coming down, you'd think that the theater would be the icon because it's centrally located. I'm just babbling here but you all get my point I know. LOL! :D

I thought the widely accepted reason for the hat's existence and it being where it is located was to sell pins/merch.

They wanted to build the hat, merchandising agreed to pay for it if it was in the middle of the park.

If you kind of go back in history you'll see that there is another theory having to do with having the right to use the theater as an icon and having to come up with a way to "hide" it so people didn't see it at the end of the street as they walked in as they do Cindy's castle on mainstreet etc. Some folks have a theory that it was put up for the 100th (which is true) and budget cuts were such that there was no money to take it down. The reasons are kind of all over the place (which is why I'd love to see something official just once but know it's a long shot lol).

It was put up as part of the 100 years marketing campaign, and was put up without regard to what the sightlines were because it was only supposed to be there temporarily. There really isn't an official icon for the Studios park anymore, mostly because no one is thinking about it needing one, so nobody has actually said "This is the icon." Merch likes icons, so they seem to use the water tower and the hat and ToT interchangeably. The likely icon for the park would probably be ToT as it's the most recognizable tall icon at the moment. The hat became the icon by default out of the fact they used it for the year to promote the park, but they were expecting once the 100 years campaign ended, it would go away and, at that time, the water tower would be back in its place. Since then, it's just stayed, because it's got a movie connection, and its dead center in Studios when you walk in.

No, it didn't get built because merch wanted a pin station, but merch did take advantage of the location after it was in, like they're wont to do. Nothing to do with hiding the theatre or anything else like that.

What im wondering is if they expand pixar place and do get rid of the backlot tour what becomes of the tower?
Scrap metal...it will sit in the corner of some parking lot for a couple of years rusting very much like the wand did at Epcot.

According to our insiders there is no such thing as an expansion plan where the hat survives.

Why would expansion effect the hat anyway? They aren't going to move it to another part of that gate because they aren't going to add a mickeyland. Anything that is done is not going to end up in front of the theater.

Because there is no way WDI would agree to it unless hat removal is involved. I would rekon that there are far more Fanbois who like the hat than Imagineers.

Yeah to add to this WDI views it as a break in theme. For them I'd imagine its obnoxious since it blocks some really great work that is the Chinese Theater.

Right... if you read the post right above yours I mention that is one of the things I've heard as well (that it was put up and just never taken down unlike the other 100th things - i.e. the wand on SSE). Again however, regardless of how many folks post that and say it's true, with the other theories that I've seen all over the place (including one in print) to the contrary and saying it was more about something to do with having to 'hide' the theater... I can't help but wonder what the real truth is. My point being simply that no theory was ever from the mouths of TDO. For years I've seen post after post like yours saying "this is the reason and the other reason isn't true" and guess what, they always conflict with each other. One person who claims to be in the know says it was because of X and another person who claims to be in the know says it was because of Y and it has been like that for so long I think the real truth probably doesn't even matter anymore. LOL! :D
