Is the "Earful Tower" returning as the DHS icon? See 2013 merchandise for clues

Right... if you read the post right above yours I mention that is one of the things I've heard as well (that it was put up and just never taken down unlike the other 100th things - i.e. the wand on SSE). Again however, regardless of how many folks post that and say it's true, with the other theories that I've seen all over the place (including one in print) to the contrary and saying it was more about something to do with having to 'hide' the theater... I can't help but wonder what the real truth is. My point being simply that no theory was ever from the mouths of TDO. For years I've seen post after post like yours saying "this is the reason and the other reason isn't true" and guess what, they always conflict with each other. One person who claims to be in the know says it was because of X and another person who claims to be in the know says it was because of Y and it has been like that for so long I think the real truth probably doesn't even matter anymore. LOL! :D

I assure you that the real truth doesn't include hiding the theater.

As it has been said, confirmed, and said again, here and many other places, the hat had nothing to do with hiding anything. Hiding the theater due to a copyright violation is laughable at best. Why? Because it is still there. The hat was part of a temporary promotion that someone thought could be kept and used as a park icon and pin station. Simple as that. Hopefully they do remove it as part of the rehab.

Not giving you what I've heard, I'm answering the facts of the situation, per what the plan was and what happened since. ;) (Sorry, that comes off a bit obnoxious, but don't know how to not word it any more succinctly. You asked, so answering from the perspective of knowing the situation. Not giving away anything proprietary or insider here, it is what it is.)

The BAH is just like the Eiffel Tower - a large temporary high tower to celebrate a centennary. Of Walt Disney, born 100 years earlier, or of the French revolution, 100 years earlier too.

In both cases, bureaucracy, spent budgets, and a feeling that tourists eventually came to expect this new icon to be there meant that the temporary structure was never torn down. To the dismay of purists, again, in both cases.

We can never have enough pictures of the bliss that is a hatless DHS, so here's a hatfree Christmas:

Meh, TDO is just trying to cover up their hatcrimes. (Although there are Disney press releases that present the as yet to be build BAH as a deliberate new icon, instead of as a temporary structure, but hush....)

Also, it is true that there was a copyright issue. But it sank into a sinkhole.

The tree is still covering it up. Perhaps not the best example of how it looked before the BAH. :p

But the point is to show how nice the hub looked! With the BAH we lost more than just a view of the theatre!
Yea, I know, I was just pulling your leg. I did, however, forget to put a smiley in, so my fault! I would say, My Bad, but then I would sound not only inconsiderate but illiterate as well.:)

I fixed it, I think!

I wasn't in the least bit offended! Offensive is this, WDW's guaranteed 100% official study to replace the Castle with a Mickey hat, to make the Magic Kingdom 'more Disney':

How dare they block the view of the theater with a Christmas Tree.

I just read through this entire thread for some reason, and if ONE MORE PERSON replies without reading with a paragraph about how the BAH is supposed to "hide" the Chinese Theater because of "rights" I will literally drive my car at top speed into a wall.

People: it was put up in 2000 as part of the millenium celebration in front of the theater because some dope somewhere thought s/he had a Good Idea. That person, curse them forever, is obviously devoid of any sense of what goes into imagineering an onstage space, and the PLACEMENT of the hat - NOT the hat itself - is like a monument to stupidity. A particular kind of stupidity that definitely has no notion of what makes these parks so darn special that we're all willing to waste countless hours arguing like fools over things like gigantic blue hats.

I think I just canceled myself out with that one.

Oh, and btw, as a former GMR cast member I can confirm that the BAH has inspired deep-seated hatred for pretty much all of its 12 years amongst us.

The earful tower is in the back of the park, and from what I remember, was only seen when I was on blt. It's a great icon, but it is hidden, where as the hat is not, reason for it staying. I have the Disney experience app on my tablet, new app, and the BAH is the icon, so for it leaving in 2013, who knows. But in the poster, it looks like 2013 being flushed down a toilet. Ironic?

Actually, besides the Tower of Terror, it's one of the first things you see in the Studios. It sits on the edge of the park, yes but it is way more visible than the hat. I remember the Studios before the hat and walking down that main street was just breath taking. It really felt like you were in another place, which is generally the goal.

Only if you enter from World Drive, which is not the route for most guests. There is also another thread discussing how this route is set to be closed.

True, but either way you can't see the hat outside the park! Definitely can see the lights though :)

Set to be closed?! Oh no! It's my favorite way in (I will purposely go around past the DtD gate).
