Is the clock ticking on the Sorcerer Mickey Hat icon at the Studios? YES!

I think the amount of work that went into Walts films was far greater and more impressive then with the Pixar films. Think of the fluidity of movement of each character in Walt's films. It is on par with the computer generated movement of the PIxar films. Walt's guys had to make that happen by drawing microscopic movements one page at a time. I don't understand as well what goes into created a Pixar film, but I have to believe it is far easier then doing it free hand. Just my opinion.

Yes it is harder to create a masterpiece by hand than by computer. However this doesn't make the Pixar films less worthy. It still requires a ton of work and a good story.

The hat is awful, to walk in the park and see that for the first time and not the Theater was disappointing and besides every time you look at that hat it looks like Mickey is flipping you off

The few people moaning over the removal of the hat will all settle down when they walk onto a restored Hollywood Boulevard and instantly 'get it'.

*This includes my wife and kids.
Eventually they will.

But half a generation has grown up projecting their love for the Studios on the hat. It is their little symbol of Disney movie magic. The icon of a park is what welcomes you in the morning, it is what you say goodbye to at night. People are genuinely attached to the hat for that reason.

Disney could've put anything in the middle of the Studios and people would've embraced it as the symbol of their affection for the park. Such as a tacky oversized plastic prop. Or an inflatable movie reel. Or a statue of Laurel and Hardy farting at each other.

And that photo of Hollywood Boulevard before the hat is just perfect. It looks just so... Beautiful. Honestly, nothing breaks the theming. Everything is pretty much perfect. I love it, as well as Sunset Boulevard. I just wish I could say the same about the rest of the park.

June 1990 was my first visit to then Disney MGM Studios. This was in the park's first full year of operation and before the Sunset Boulevard area was open. After visiting Epcot and the Magic Kingdom year after year since I was a little child the scale and design of the park fully succeeded in being both exotic and familiar. The entrance sequence and even the turn to Echo Lake had that perfect "architecture of reassurance" as John Hench so eloquently espoused.

This was before the time when the Studios became the dumping ground for imports that didn't quite thematically fit elsewhere. The Studios had its own clear identity and was an exciting place to be, even if it didn't have a ton of things to do.

All they have done since the actual production Studio stopped functioning is layer muck upon junk. It is time to fix it.

So eloquently stated Hench could take a leaf from your book in turn!

I too grew up on MK and EPCOT. When the Studios opened I was nineteen. I thought the gate had closed, that no other Disney park could compete with my two childhood loves. But amzaingly, the Studios managed. For the very reasons you describe. It is both sufficiently different and alike from the other two parks to succeed. I really fell in love with the place.

I do think the Studios could do with some clever rethinking of the back areas. But I fear the current proposals will only aggravate the matter, instead of solving it. Adding IP property lands adds nothing but another layer of mess, only increases the park's problem as 'the dumping ground'.
Also, much as I love Star Wars, I'd hate for SW to take over the American Idol / Echo Lake area. This is part of the front lot for me, so very pretty. All this area needs is a fun attraction in the AI building, not an overhaul into an IP land.

I'd say -- and this is without talking to my peeps -- that you're looking at Star Wars largely in 2017 (some parts may open in '16.

Avatar was supposed to be late 2017 BEFORE the latest delay, so I'm saying Spring 2018.

And I think you may see an element or two of Cars Land still, but the entire land isn't going to happen at this point.

I hate doing this because the same questions will get asked in multiple threads beceuas folks don't like reading.

But RIGHT NOW:

1.) Gone;
2.) Likely stay, but perhaps in a different form;
3.) 100% goner.

Cool. Mini-Carsland is perfect. Indy closing/moving also perfect because the franchise is better utilized elsewhere. And Star Wars is the best franchise to challenge Uni. I see the decision makers think like me. Keep up the good work TDO.
:cool:

View attachment 31745 Interesting that they used both the old logo and the water tower... Then again it could mean absolutely nothing :p

I'd love to read into this, but since Mickey is wearing the sorcerer hat, they probably thought it would look odd to have it in the graphic twice.

What this DOES tell me is that Disney still has not given DHS an identity. They're not consistent on the "icon" used for it in various forms of media.

Is it the hat? Is it the Earful Tower? Is it the Tower of Terror?

The Earful Tower has been featured in many of the marketing materials as of late.
And that was the original Icon back when Disney-MGM was first built.
So it stands to reason that the Earful Tower will be the icon once the Sorcerer's Hat comes down.
