Is the clock ticking on the Sorcerer Mickey Hat icon at the Studios? YES!

You are correct it can justifiably fit the Disney Hollywood theme. What puts it out of place is #1.. It's location and #2 it should never have been considered a focal point in a park that was celebrating all of Hollywood, not just Disney's place in it. That makes two reasons why, although it certainly is a part of Hollywood history, it didn't belong where they put it. Again, fine as a temporary salute to Walt Disney on his 100th Birthday, however, as a permanent structure and the attempt to make it the park Icon. I don't think so.

I know that it is all a lot of Guests have ever known, but, I used to love 20K, but, for some reason, that didn't stop it from going away. Things change and I think if they get a chance to see how much more balanced the park looks without it, they might decide that taking it out was a good decision. Change is hard for everybody.
I think that is the misnomer to which many have fallen victim. Disney does not want to promote or celebrate Hollywood at large, but rather they want to promote the idea that Disney is the biggest and best media empire in the entire world. Radio, television, music, Broadway, resorts, cruise lines, publishing, consumer products, interactive media, real estate, venture capital, theme parks, travel, sports and movies. The BAH was very appropriate.

(Not picking on your post, just using it as reference.)

But the Chinese theater, not owned or operated by Disney, screams Disney to many as well. While there is the history of some premiers, it's not a unique Disney symbol, just a Hollywood symbol. I too am not critiquing people opinions, but I don't see the value in the theater beyond a great choice for the GMR facade. I've seen the real theater and I've seen the original view at DMS (Disney-MGM Studios). IMHO, there is nothing dramatic nor impressive about the theater facade, which I'll venture to bet, was one of the um-teen reasons the hat was installed after the dropping of "MGM".

Had DHS maintained and grown the on-prem facility use for animation, the BAH would have been a keeper. But at this point, with the working studio concept dead, dead, dead....I don't think either (BAH or water tower) make sense. Hopefully any re-theming/branding of the park, the water tower will once again hold value as the icon.

The functioning studio aspect was actually dying years before the Hat was installed, and the BAH was installed well before the dropping of MGM from the park's name. BAH was 2001, name change was in 2008. The name change was for the better, in my opinion, but that can be debated. The theater is a symbol of Hollywood's golden age, that's the point. Referring back to Eisner's dedication for the park:

"The World you have entered was created by The Walt Disney Company and is dedicated to Hollywood—not a place on a map, but a state of mind that exists wherever people dream and wonder and imagine, a place where illusion and reality are fused by technological magic. We welcome you to a Hollywood that never was—and always will be." —Michael Eisner, May 1, 1989

That last line, to me, should be the core focus of Hollywood/Sunset Boulevard and their offshoot streets at DHS, although that may or may not change for the better or worse in the coming years. I at least take solace in knowing that the proper vista of Disney's idealized, fantasy Hollywood Boulevard will be restored.

Do tell us how a dud is the best representation of a media empire.

Hardly a dud. Fantasia was a critical success in the world of artsy fartsy. It was the ultimate "longhair musical". Leopold Stokowski, Mickey Mouse and Deems Taylor put Disney on the map as an innovative Hollywood studio rather than just a cartoon factory. Sure, it lost more money than Pinocchio but with the introduction of Fantasound, the very limited release of the film, the length of the film at over two hours and special seating of guests by Disney trained staff were all designed to make the movie a very special presentation unlike any other. It was very high class.

Or course it was not popular with the public. But Dr. Dre has sold more music than Stokowski ever dreamed of selling. The BAH is a symbol of power.

Dedicated to Hollywood. Period. Putting a huge, temporary, cheap looking hat in front of an actual Hollywood landmark does not reflect the mission statement of the park. Period.

Rumor is that the first of the interchangeable icon blow ups will be Beymax, and after his four month tenure sources say a massive snowflake, then something called Moke Moke, are being designed. What the heck is a Moke moke? This is actually kind of inventive as a temp thing until a new icon is eventually decided upon. Kudos to TDO!
