Is Disney World Safe

Is it safe? Safer than outside, yes. But not much. Courtesy bag search to give an impression of safety is about it.

It is funny because I see strollers go though with ease. I have a small Eddie Bauer cross shoulder messanger bag, just big enough to hold my SLR camera and my eye glass case. I was made to open my small eyeglass case but the stroller with 30 bags was waved through. Crazy!

It depends on what is going on. After incidents happen, the searches get more intensive. The line was short on the 19th but it took three times as long as everything was getting searched carefully when I was trying to get into Epcot.

Orlando is one of the cities with the highest crime rates. I know Disney isn't directly located in Orlando, but many people often think it is - its close enough anyway. I'm not saying this to scare anyone. Just be careful and always be alert. Never let your kids out of your sight. You never know when the next person would wake up one day and decide on a mass shooting, as terrible as that sounds. I don't live in fear everyday, I just always have my guards up no matter where I'm at.

Also, I don't understand the bag checking at the parks. If I wanted to sneak in a weapon, it could easily be done, concealed somewhere on my body. Just sayin'

I wouldn't worry about that. Memphis is #5 on the most dangerous cities list, but it doesn't deter us from doing our errands there.

It's kinda weird that many southeast cities were in that list:
Atlanta, Birmingham, Memphis, Miami, Orlando

And the thing is, I don't blink an eye when in ATL or BHM

How dangerous was Newtown Connecticut considered a month ago? It can happen anywhere at any time. If somebody has enough crossed wires in their head and no fear of consequences then there is really just no stopping them. I think Disney does what it has to in order to maintain an air of security but at the end of the day it is all smoke and mirrors to help the overall mood feel lighter and more carefree once you are inside the parks. I do appreciate what they do and I am sure that they actually do find weapons so anything that mitigates even a little risk via the slight inconvenience is OK by me but I am not so misguided that I think it catches everything.

I believe that WDW is as safe as any place. If something is going to happen, it will happen. No sense in worrying about it.

We were able to witness Disney security at its best on our recent trip. While waiting for the bus to AKL, a family, yes a family, was having an all out fight at the bus stop. It was a pretty nasty fight. Security was right there and calling for backup. In less than a minute the "real cops" showed up and between them and Disney security the fight was broken up and the family was taken away to an unknown location (headed to the management office I believe).

Sad that at the happiest place in the world this could happen but it did. I saw nothing but professionalism and quick response. I imagine that the rest of the trip for the family wasn't much fun :O

They were probably cranky over ECV's and napkins:D

Modern surveillance has come a long way, and I would think Disney would be on the cutting edge of such technology. Security is always watching you, even if you think they are not or have no possible way.

Jimmy Thick- I wouldn't worry about my safety at Disney World.

I don't want to burst anyone's bubble but in the world we live in if someone wants to shoot em up they'll do it. In Connectcut that school was more or less nailed shut but the shooter shot his way through the locked door.

There are few public places with the illusion of safety more than Disney World. I actually like the fact that there is just a mere bag check when you walk into the parks. Millions upon millions of people go to the parks annually and no one gets shot. I live my life knowing that I am safe in this world wherever I am (save for some common sense moments where you intentionally put yourself in a bad situation). I prefer to live life this way. The fact that people live their life like the boogeyman is right around the corner is silly.

Ever try going through the Empire State Building in New York? A prisoner will be checked more than that. You know you are safe when you are up there, but at what cost? Can you imagine metal detectors at the front of Disney World? I don't want to live in that world.

Report says this was in an "employee area."

We all assume that a hypothetical psycho would be a guest. But I haven't seen much discussion pertaining to what could be a loose canon CM. We (and Disney) shouldn't be ignorant of that possibility...

That article is overblowing the whole thing. Hollowed grenades can be purchased ALL over the place as memorabilia just like a trading pin. This is comparable to wondering if one of the guns at potc end is going to be real.

You're probably right. News media tends to do that in general. However, it's easy to view a false alarm as "overblown" until something bad happens, then it's a could've should've would've hindsight blame game. As for comparing them to potc guns, we expect to see faux weapons in attractions, but we don't expect to find them abandoned in trash cans in heavily populated areas. A simple unmarked package is enough to raise safety concerns and the need to call out the bomb squad. So I can imagine the surprise and concern someone would have when they find exposed grenades that are designed to inflict harm much different from that of a gun or knife. That would have been enough to frighten me, that's for sure.

Drilled outs most of the time are not just drilled but have the bottom surface cut off. Several of which have the ignition source completely removed or rendered irreperable (live in a very military area). I agree some or most would not expect to see it. I guess this is one of the items on depends what you are exposed to growing up or the area you live in. Still pretty bad that this is what society has come to; a need to be alarmists.

I saw a bomb sniffing dog in TTC when we where there. He went up and down smelling our monorail and the one across the way. Delayed the monorails departure but made me feel very safe. So much protection around. Cops eating with us and everything. Disney was always part of being safe. Keys to the Kingdom tour for those of you who took it.
