Is Disney Pricing themselves out of the Middle Class???

You should give cruising a try! We took our first one last summer and loved it. There's so much to do for everyone, including children. We worried about getting sea sick and feeling cramped up - no worries! Not one of the 6 of us got sick and as a precaution there's motion sickness medication available (Bonine). We live in TX, so we cruised on Carnival's new Magic ship out of Galveston. It was beautiful and huge! I don't know about other cruise lines, but Carnival works just like Disney as far as making payments up until your deadline. They also have a website with a forum just like this one, so you can ask all the questions you want.
Thank you so much for the info!! I had no idea they did the pricing the same way!! I've always wanted to do 1!!

You're welcome! I used to spend a lot of time on the Carnival forums in preparation for my trip. What's funny is my screen name was "ILuvDW". Then one day I discovered this forum so here I am. Disney is my "true love," lol...

This is an interesting thread....Disney has always been and will continue to be expensive.
I enjoyed your post but ...

WDW has not always been expensive. Decades ago I was able to afford it on my own as a poor student. I'll use 2 numbers (already posted earlier on this thread):
  • In 1971, a room in the Contemporary annex was as low as $22/night, about $125/night adjusted for inflation. Today, a room at the Value Resorts costs more than this for many nights of the year.
  • In 1982, a 3-day hopper ticket was $35, abour $83.50 adjusted for inflation. Today, a 1-day base ticket costs more than this.
Michael Eisner started the price hikes when he took over in 1984 but within a few years they slowed down. From the early 1990s to the early 2000s, price increases were, relatively speaking, in line with the rate of inflation. However, in the last 8 years under Bob Iger, the price increases have been crazy once again.

At least Eisner gave us 2 theme parks, 2 water parks, and lots of new attractions. Iger has managed to approve a $450M expansion that has given us one new C ticket attraction (after closing another C ticket attraction) and $1.5B on NextGen, something that no one seems to be able to explain.

I didn't know what NextGen was so I just looked it up... basically a ride reservation system that you book before you get to the park (even from home)... what a horrible idea! I hope it never happens. I can't imagine trying to plan what time I would be at a particular ride that far in advance. Trying to plan around dinner reservations is hard enough.

If you feel underpaid, why not find a different job?

Jimmy Thick- Yes, its that simple.

I love Disney, that's all there is to it. If I didn't enjoy working there, I wouldn't be there. I like making other people happy because it makes me happy. It's a cool part-time job for a broke college student, I just don't see how other cast members are able to work there for decades and I feel for them because I know how hard they work to make other people's day. Not only that, it's quite a feat to get overtime pay because they're really strict about it now. I'm considering my benefits (free admissions for myself and family & friends) as part of my pay. All in all, I love my job, but don't see myself working for the company once I graduate unless I land a professional position.

We do the same thing you do when we go with the in-laws every other year. but as for staying at the other resorts which we do with my parents, if it;s not free dining, I won't book, thats why in 3 weeks I'm taking the kids on a Carnival cruise for 7 days for 1500.00 cheaper than disney. We were such big Disney people.
We've thought about going on a cruise, but we wouldn't be able to bring our fur babies. That's why we like to RV. You get to sleep in your own bed (no cooties!) and you get to bring the pups (wagging tails to welcome you home every day after a rough day doing 'people stuff'). If we don't do Disney this year, we'll still vacation in the RV, we'll just find another destination. There is a lot of this country that we have yet to explore!

I love Disney World but am finding it hard to justify the price anymore. We have two teens so it is 4 adults for us. We like to stay onsite it is expensive if you stay off site and pay to park or shuttle it is expensive. Free dinning is not really free you pay rack rate rooms, dinning plan has gotten to be less of a value over the years and food is expensive.

We are cruise converts too. We can stay in an interior cabin all in with food, tips and travel for under $2500. That does not include excursions if you want to participate in them. It also does not include drinks but they have enough of a variety at the all day buffets.

I will admit that I would prefer Disney any day but I think they are pricing themselves out of many peoples price range. I would be the first to argue that Disney is more than an average theme park but in the end it really is just a theme park. Even if it is my happy place.

oh, btw, I cannot justify the price of a Disney cruise either.

Are you doing a Disney cruise?
I've always wanted to do a cruise...any cruise. LOL Little afraid of sea sickness though!

We're going on our 4th Disney cruise in June and very excited - always a blast! From our perspective, once you go on a Disney cruise, others just don't stack up (but then again they are usually less expensive). The only other cruise line we've been on was Norwegian but it was just not the same from the service, to accommodations, to having to pay for every soda.

If you haven't been on a cruise, you've just got to do it. Don't worry about sea sickness! When the weather gets rough, the ship (for the most part) just changes course and navigates around it. And there are plenty of things you can take or do to take care of sea sickness if it's going to be a little rough.

I had to look up what middle class is. To my suprise from what i found it is between 40 and 60 grand a year(give or take) So yea I think they are. I guess i understand why so many ppl are 1 and done visitors.
Depends on where you live, cost of living, average median income. In parts of NJ< , where income is higher than national average, an income up to 122,000 can be considered middle class.
VA and DC also have much higher numbers.

Yea that was an average with the upper end being around 120000. But with a person making 60 or 120 in theory have the same amount of money to spend on vacations bc of cost of living.

Bloopers lives in the Central Fla area. The words "simple" and "find job" are rarely heard in the same sentence in that part of the country.

That is nothing more than a excuse, and a popular one at that. One's life is what one makes of it.

In response to op, yes, Disney is way out of control in hiking prices. In mid recession I think it was like two years Ago they hiked prices twice in one year?. Anyway the way I see it is they want to weed out (us budget) wdw passholders because lots of us do not spend a lot on say merchandise and dining.
It's like Disneyland ap ticket prices are priced outrageous and it's to help accomadate the big spender(people taking their yearly vacation) as opposed to ap holders( drop in ride and leave).
Plus nowadays a sweatshirt cost $50 ... And it looks like t shirt material !???!
They're reay pushing it I think.
And they should have never done the monthly installment plan that just makes the place so much more crowded.

What a great philosophy, "life is what one makes of it". Tell that to the victims of the Holocaust. Tell that to Africans captured by slave traders and brought over to the Americas against their will. Tell that to nearly every civilian killed in every war. Tell that to the gang-rape victim in India. Tell that to victims of child abuse, child molestation, child labor.

The simple fact in life is that those in positions of authority often abuse it, whether they are leading a country, an army, a family, or a business.

Life is what one makes of it? Go read some history and go get a clue.

Problem being, I think it costs a whole lot more to RUN Disney World than it did in '82. Top that with the usual corporate greed Disney is constantly filled with, and you got yourself a real problem.
It's still doable. But you gotta REALLY plan in advance. Especially if you're not a Florida local. But yeah, Disney better watch themselves or they'll price themselves right out of the business.
