Is Disney dollars scheme ending?!

Disney Dollars were introduced in 1987 at Disneyland; not sure if they made it to WDW that same year. (someone was asking how long they've been around)
I have one from 1987 and 1988 - got at WDW

I believe SirNim is referring to the correlation between Jack Lindquest's recent passing, and the rumor of the production of Disney dollars ending (unless I have missed a post, I don't see anything firm that indicates it is ending.)

Keep in mind, Disney registers must continue to accept Disney Dollars up until the day Disney is no more (which we'd hope was never, but everything has an end.) As such, there will remain a good chance that if we ask the cast members if they have any Disney Dollars in their register, and may we trade off some currency for them, they will do so.

Yup, that's what it feels like... that Disney Dollars were kept around for as long as they were simply as a gesture of goodwill towards the man who developed them - so as to not offend him. And two weeks after his passing, they're officially off the shelves. And if the man were still here today, Disney Dollars would still be for sale at all City Halls/Chambers of Commerce from Anaheim to Bay Lake, and not "off-sale" as a matter of official policy (even though reports are coming in that they're still available in certain locations).

Keep in mind that if this were so, Jack's passing would have essentially been a "trigger" for these pre-developed phase-out plans to go into effect, which seems very crass.

Anyone willing to trade Disney Dollars? I have been collecting for a number of years....now that Disney has announced the official discontinuation, everyone seems to have found Ebay.....prices are a bit ridiculous...(not that they haven't been for years). Anywho....I'd love to trade with a fellow Disney Fan to help complete collections. Reach out to me if you are interested.

I finally received my order of disney dollars today. I ordered them back on the 13th and they just now came in. I order 10 $10 and I was disappointed that they came in with the same characters on them, they were all stitch from 2005. Like others have said I was going to go on ebay and see if I could purchase other characters but the mark up those are stupid.

You'd probably be best finding or setting up a swap through a site and group you trust.

Bumping this thread... what are the chances of the Disney dollar's comes back once the parks reopen? Great way to Disney to get some money coming in....

Disney Dollars were good money but have nothing on gift cards in terms of profitability. If you buy two sodas for $8 with your $10 Disney Dollar, you get real cash back. If you buy two sodas on a gift card, you wind up with $2 left on a gift card that a lot of people could care less about, lose or forget to spend.

It's one of the reason Vegas (and other casinos) started using ticket vouchers instead of coins. A fortune is made from the <$1 slips that people don't bother cashing out.

Considering Disney is already offering gift cards? Slim to none. Disney Dollars couldn't have been cheap to produce and distribute (then accounted for when spent) versus gift cards which are verified electronically and are produced widely.

Solid point.

The funny thing is- my Mom was cleaning out some old boxes, and found some Disney dollars. And I wondered-

would they still accept these as currency anymore? Probably not right? I might be better off selling them as "vintage" on Ebay.

Wow - another old thread pops up.

Yes, Disney still honors the old Disney dollars, but they are worth far more on ebay than Disney which takes them at face value.
In my opinion, these take up minimal space in a dresser drawer and are cool collectibles to pass on for generations. I'd keep them.

With our current environment Disney doesn't want any physical currency so I'm guessing they won't start printing their own.
