Even though there's no more books or movies being made, Potters still make fans when someone new reads the old books for the first time and when parents who are already Potter fans introduce their own kids to the books. So there'll always be demand for a park that can demonstrate at least a bit of what the Wizarding World is and give fans a view into the world of Harry Potter..

There is more potter (or wizarding world) stuff coming. See the Forbes article More Harry Potter Movies on the Way

I am as big a disney-a-holic as there is out there. WDW is my favorite place on earth. However, in my humble opinion, the WWOHP is the most well themed and immersive area of any theme park in the world. It literally takes your breath away and makes you feel as though you have entered a new world. Having said that, I have never looked at this in a vs way. I enjoy both parks! But to answer the question, I think Avatar will be awesome, but I don't think anything will diminish WWOHP.

The first Harry potter book came out in 1998. It's safe to assume the age of the book's target audience was ~10 years old. In 2018, when Avatar will be opening, that same target audience will be in their early 30's - raising a new generation of Potterheads.

Disney always thrived on the nostalgia factor of the older generations bringing the newer generation to see and share the magic they grew up with. Not only is Disney going to lose in the "cool new attractions" department, they are also eventually going to suffer in the nostalgia one as well.

But there is also the chance Potter won't have the life cycle as other IP's such as Star Wars. Universal could lose interest in Potter as well. Never say never. What is the chance IoA is drawing 10 million a year when Avatar opens? Highly unlikely.

Avatar, when open, could be its nail in the coffin. There is more to Avatar than the new rides, it make AK an evening park, that's absolutely huge. 13, possibly 14 million a year after one full year? Quite possible.

Jimmy Thick- Yes, possible.

You don't have a Potter fan in your family, do you?

The 2nd Phase of Harry Potter isn't for IOA and why would you mention a chance of IOA getting 10 million than? The 2nd Phase is improving attendance at the other Universal Studios park.

I also think AK getting 3, possibly 14 million a year after one full year of Avatar is unrealistic because Avatar doesn't that IP power of Harry Potter unless DHS Attendance goes down and Epcot's for that matter.

I've watched Avatar and as a movie, it's just OK. It's basically Ferngully 2.0 engulfed in CGI advancements with an Aliens feel (especially with Sigourney Weaver / James Cameron connection). It just doesn't do it for me... there's not enough character development and you just don't have an emotional attachment with the cast. They spent $237M and grossed $760M, I've still only watched it two times-at home. Yes, I can see how the technology will be cool to use in a theme park and I'm sure I'll enjoy it when I experience it, but I would much rather see a larger project used in a better way.

I agree that the success of the future films that are planned will have a long term impact on the park. There's a HP prequel in the works now (set in the same world, older characters?), so I'm sure they'll be out in theaters around the same time competing for your attention. I'm sure the integration of the new(er) films will be easy to do in both parks and boost brand assurance. I can't really envision an extended story of Avatar that would peak my interest. Avatar 2 is due for release in 2016 and the 3rd movie in 2017. I'll wait until it's $1 at Redbox to see it at home.

You can only do so much, especially down-the-line of a big franchise... take Alien vs. Predator for example/crying out loud, it's a B-movie on a $60M budget that grossed $172M worldwide in '04. The AVPR movie cost $40M to make and grossed $128.9M worldwide in '07. I understand we're dealing with a global phenomenon that is Avatar (that came out 5 years ago-the last HP movie came out in 2011), but I just can't see Disney trumping DC/HP/Seuss with blue fairies, a zoo, and DL USA.

People are going to spend half-days at HS+AK to spend 1 full day at IOA regardless of what Disney has to offer. I don't feel that it's logical to throw money at the problem, which is how I look at this Animal Kingdom expansion as... a 2 movie deal with Cameron that seems forced (to make this happen, probably), and all this happens while other money-making parks need more attention. You know, but I could be wrong, it's just how I feel about it all.

Avatar Land won't be the Potter slayer. But Avatar Land, and then Star Wars Land opening one after the other could do pretty well and slow the supposed Uni momentum.

That depends on what else Uni has planned. Jimmy keeps talking about Potter as if it is all Uni has going. I wouldn't be surprised to see at least one major new addition beyond Potter before Avatar opens along with some other smaller improvements.

In the face of todays stunning ground breaking for Avatar at AK, I personally applaud Disney taking their time and getting their ducks in a row for what could be the most amazing themed area ever.

Now this also brings up the inevitable.

Is Avatar the Potter swatter everyone thinks Disney needs?

First, I don't think personally Avatar will be done on the cheap, I think its going to be amazing far beyond what we as Disney fans expect.

Second, Joe Rhode. Nuff said.

Third, there is a growing number of people who think if Carsland opened at WDW it would have blown Potter back to England in a soiled diaper. What if Disney goes to that extreme with Avatar? I think they will, Carsland I feel will open purse strings because it was such a huge hit.

Is Avatar the next big thing?

Jimmy Thick- Once completed, AK becomes number two in attendance. Thanks to Avatar.

Why are you so concerned about a "Potter Swatter"? By your assertions in other threads Disney is in a totally different league then Uni and Uni provides no competition. Why does Disney even need to try to swat Potter?
