Patience on the cases... It's only a few days! If you wanted a fully developed ecosystem why did you buy the phone on first day of availability?? :)

1. Only a few days yes, but I want this phone to stay in good shape for at least 2 years, and I'm paranoid.
2. I bought it on the first day because I thought Apple would be ready with cases...I even asked at the store earlier than week and was assured by 2 employees that they would be ready to go. It was naive of my to believe them, I guess.

There is basically no way that can happen, because Apple don't release the dimensions to the case manufactures until launch day. First week of October is about the earliest that the main suppliers are going to be ready.

Because my home key on my 4 was shot. I do think Apple could've been better prepared. At the very LEAST they should've had the 30 pin converter things ready. Apple's website says they aren't shipping those until October.

The secondary case companies I can understand. Makes me wonder, though, if Apple might be better off sending mock-up shells to key manufacturers ahead of time (besides just Ottrbox) so there can be more products available. This was my first and probably last time jumping on release day. Won't make that mistake again!

**edit**
Will say, I'm more patient with all this than the old man. He's seriously ed at the lack of accessories, particularly that converter. Still, it's his first time partaking upon release, as well. Definitely a learning experience for both of us.

The converter issue is stupid. But the problem is they couldn't really give them out early either.. because people would expect compatibility to be tested - and you can't do that without the phone itself :) I suppose all early manufacturing of the converter is being sucked up by the actual phone production line.

I mean...I get it, but I don't like it. It just seems weird to me. :(

Actually, I had my Otterbox Defender iPhone 5 cases delivered before launch day.

My guess is Otterbox decided to take the risk and start producing cases based on the leaked information. Last year, before the iPhone 4S was released more manufacturers were ready with cases for the tear-drop shaped iPhone 5 and were hit hard when that phone did not materialize. The iPhone 4S had so many cases available because its external dimensions were identical to those of the CDMA iPhone 4.

Yep I believe that some of the manufacturers threw the dice and gambled on the leaked info. They were not given the details from Apple until the launch day.

Seems like an incredibly expensive gamble, if they got it wrong they'd be on the hook for an awful lot of money. I can't imagine their margins are that strong... Maybe Otterbox has an insider in Cupertino? o_O

I was reading an interesting article about the whole process at http://news.cnet.com/8301-13579_3-5...-the-iphone-5-sent-one-case-maker-scrambling/

Apparently in previous years they have been wrong and have scrapped 100,000s of cases. Now we know they charge so much!

I just checked, the iPhone 5 schematics were released on the 15th of September. Assuming a fairly rapid turnaround from already-drawn concepts to tooling for manufacture [same-day or overnight], they could have shipped initial units to arrive on time. When I ordered, it was a "pre-order" and they didn't say when it would be shipped. Plastic and silicon injection molding is a fairly fast process once the molds are cast.

Yeah I think it all depends on where and how it is being made. The Cnet article on Incase talks about how they took the plans from the Sep 15 launch day, did some tweeks, and then got it fired off to China. They are talking about first week of Oct for delivery. I assume if things were made in the USA and were already close to be finalized it could be quicker.

I think I'm just going to go caseless this time.

I'm surprised to say I've been pretty happy with the new Defender so far. The outer portion is smooth and much more "stronger" than the one for 4/4S and the little flaps stay in place to the point where it's difficult to get them undone! And the home button thing works a lot better too. I was having to pull the outer portion up sometimes to hit the actual button. The camera opening is a bit larger than I'd like it to be, but I imagine it'll be ok. It's also pretty darn sexy - I got the white/black one, which is sleek with the white portions of the phone underneath (though I'd be lying if I wasn't a tad paranoid about it getting dirty haha). I'll definitely stick with this until it's gone to crap and the Lifeproof cases are out.
