Bob Iger is a man who thinks it is undignified for him to wear Mickey Mouse Ears on television at Disneyland. That tweet seems very out of character.
I thought it was a parody account. Unbelievable.
I suppose it’s okay to be undignified when you’re mocking idiots.
I take solace in knowing he doesn’t have a real strategy. He is focused solely on derisking creativity.
Make movies part of cinematic universes. Produce sequel after sequel, even if that sequel hurts the original creation (Mary Poppins Returns anyone?). Theme parks based off of franchises.
He’s allergic to risk. The Walt Disney Company of 2019 will only take risks when it gets too risky not to take risks. Take streaming. They only started to risk it all when they absolutely needed to. Disney California Adventure was upgraded because doing anything less would have been extremely detrimental.
Shanghai? But even that venture involved 50% investment of a municipality.
Has he ever had a “bet the company” moment that didn’t HAVE to happen?
The current strategy is about to hit a crescendo. But after that? Episode 123, Avengers 65, Moana 8, Pirates 40. How much longer can it go on?
He’s taken fundamentally creative organizations and destroyed them. He took Pixar’s story groups, and turned them into derisking committees. Now everything is made in a committee. That means there aren’t any “bad” films. It also means there aren’t any surprising ones either.
Perhaps no organization has suffered more than Pixar. The man that supposedly is good for the studio, strip mined the most promising studio startup in decades. John Lasseter let it happen (and even contributed), but Iger is ultimately responsible. Similiar to how Apple has let Beats languish, so too has Pixar been neglected. That’s not to say they don’t make fine movies anymore. They just don’t make anything amazing. It’s been sad to see one of the greatest disrupters of our century produce Cars 3, Toy Story 4, etc.
His “hands off” approach works for companies with good management (Marvel), but fails for others (Lucasfilm). The individuals leading Lucasfilm are creating a cesspool of exclusive self referential content that is governing story choices in their mainstream products. That’s why a Dave Filoni character will make his way to Disneyland... Mercy!
(Hondo a character from the “if you watch it long enough it gets good we promise clone wars,” will be in Galaxy’s Edge. It doesn’t ever get good...)
Meanwhile they systematically killed off some of the most beloved cinematic characters of all time (and made them grouchy or stupid). “Oh, and we have no plan for who Rey is, who Snoke is, or who Finn is.” “We’re going to wing it!” I would have taken some parent company intervention at that point.
It turns out letting people who lack talent create art turns out badly whether you have hands on or off!
Iger can be credited with seeing Kevin and not stopping him. Besides that Iger’s tenure at Walt Disney is actually shockingly bad.
ESPN- Everything is fine, we’ll just keep passing that onto the consumer. Oh wait, we just signed a ten year contract the consumer isn’t willing to pay.
Netflix- We’re going to sign onto Netflix so our content can be available everywhere. Three years later we’re going to be pulling content because it turns out Netflix is a threat.
Streaming- We’re not planning on doing streaming. Three years later, we’re betting the company on streaming.
Studio- We’re going to make yearly Star Wars Films. Three years later, we think there is Star Wars fatigue. Who could have seen that coming?!?!
Parks- Domestic parks are a mature business. We’re finished with them. Wait no, actually they’re our primary growth driver now. Guardians everywhere!
He’s actually made a series of high profile blunders that would have sunk normal companies.
This cannot go on forever. We don’t have to look far to see another storied company losing focus... Or what happens next.
But everything is great! You can always blame it on China if things go south!
