Important information for shareholders

Hey guys, I just got my annual report and I was looking at the voting sheet. I know alot of people on this forum don't like me or think im too extreme but I want to recommend to all shareholders to vote AGAINST putting Orin C. Smith on the board of directors.

Orin C. Smith is the former President and CEO of Starbucks. He approved of the "mcdonaldization" of the brand and opened up a starbucks everywhere that he could because he believed it was smart business but in reality diminished the brand. This has now cost the company dearly and the current CEO and the original founder are now having to close most of these stores and launching a series of cost cutting initiatives to save the company.

Disney is in a delicate spot right now and we do not need a person like this on the board of directors making dangerouns decisions. So please, if you are a shareholder and care about the Walt Disney Company, vote against Orin C. Smith.

Thanks

I completely agree with you. It was horrible the way Starbucks rapidly expanded the way it did... and now they are paying with store closings.

So I too am not going to vote for Orin.

Shouldn't this be in General Discussion?

the original owner(s) of Starbucks haven't been with the company since 1984. The 3 sold it to Shultz back then.

And with Starbucks having their dealing with Apple and iTunes, I would assume that's how the connection with Orin Smith took place. Steve Jobs being on Apple's and Disney's board seems to be a logical answer.

I would agree. I don't know why he left, or why he is getting on the board, but this seems like a poor decision based on the information on the internet about him. If there is an opposing perspective, I would be glad to hear it.

I dont think u guys have to worry! I really dont see disney worlds oppening everywhere just because this guy gets hired! Im sure theres a reason for wdw to even think of hiring him! Im sure he could be an asset to the company somehow! just my .2 cent!

It isn't a concern that the same Starbucks mentality would be used with Disney theme parks. Obviously, we won't be seeing a Magic Kingdom in every state since it would just be fiscally ridiculous. I think the idea here is the business mentality. The idea that you could find a starbucks every three feet has now backfired on the company and they are paying for the mistakes. Sometimes business executives don't change from the mistakes they have made. However, there is no proof that his views have changed one way or another since he is no longer involved with Starbucks management.

Also, Disney doesn't really hire their Directors. Directors are nominated and then chosen by every single shareholder (if they exercise their right to vote). These are people who are mostly independent from the company (besides for their extensive share holdings), and decide on upper management decisions such as who the top executives in the company should be and how they should be compensated.

Probably more so belongs in Disney Co News and Discussion.

While I doubt that he would try to open a theme park on every corner, he definitely could do a lot of harm to the name.

It isn't the availability or number of Starbucks out there that is causing the problem.

Its the cost of the drinks.

McDonalds does fine with them being everywhere, and they are opening more, even in 2009.
Dunkin Donuts has tons of locations (especially here in the northeast) as well, and they aren't doing badly.
But Starbucks astronomical prices are causing them to be badly hurt.

I was never a fan of Starbuck's coffee. Too bitter for my taste. As for voting my shares, I too voted agianst Orin Smith. Even though we won't garner enough against votes to oust him, maybe we can get enough to have the rest of the board, Iger, and other shareholders to take notice. The only true way to oust him would be to set up a campaign like Roy Disney did to get rid of Michael Eisner. All shareholders got on board after Save Disney was created. Maybe we can start out own Save Disney site and movement.
